The Kelly brecciated chondrite, originally classified as a polymict breccia, is actually a monomict breccia, based on conclusions from this study. Microprobe analyses of differently textured clasts are very similar to each other and also to well-known LL-type chondrites. Clast and matrix olivine compositions range between Fa27–31, well within the range of LL-chondrite olivine. A correlation was found between the degree of recrystallization and plagioclase composition; least recrystallized plagioclase is more Ca-rich than fully recrystallized plagioclase. Petrographic observations of shocked, annealed, and unshocked clasts coupled with particle size distribution measurements strongly indicate that Kelly is similar to lunar metabreccias in mode of formation, i.e., repeated mixing and accumulation of disaggregated surface rocks and impacting debris followed by partial annealing under moderate temperatures. At least three breccia generations are indicated. We propose that Kelly is an LL-chondrite parent body metabreccia that represents the final accumulation phase of the parent body. Only LL-type fragments were found in Kelly, which suggests that the parent body consisted of only LL-chondrites and was not a multi-shelled body of H-, L-, and LL-chondrites.  相似文献

Problems in the determination of sensible heat flux over snow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Measurements, as well as the majority of present–day GCM simulations, indicate an increase in air temperature, especially for polar regions. In order to improve the quality of GCM predictions for these regions, it is necessary to achieve good parameterization of the energy exchange, especially of the sensible heat flux between atmosphere and snow, because the high latitudes are snow–covered for as many as nine months. During the snowmelt periods in 1995 and 1998, eddy–covariance and profile measurements of wind speed and air temperature were carried out in the Kärkevagge, a valley in the Abisko Mountains in Swedish Lapland. Sensible heat flux was calculated by the profile and bulk method and compared to the directly measured sensible heat flux. The profile and the bulk method gave reliable results as long as all data were measured within the surface layer and radiation errors for air–temperature data were small. The bulk method yielded better results than the profile method in periods with high values of upwelling shortwave radiation. All measurements conducted outside the surface layer, which was frequently shallow in 1998, were unusable for the profile method. Similarly, the eddy–covariance method produced unreliable results if the instrument was operating outside the surface layer. In such a case, however, the bulk method produced at least a minimal estimate for the sensible heat flux. None of the methods yielded reasonable results for all meteorological conditions. This aspect should be noted when seeking new methods to improve the calculation of sensible heat flux in GCMs.  相似文献

We measured CO2, CO, CH4, H2, and NO2 in air masses polluted by savanna fires over Côte d'Ivoire, western Africa. Elevated concentrations of these trace gases were found in fire plumes and also in extensive haze layers. Trace gas mixing ratios ranged as high as 605 ppmv for CO2, 14.8 ppmv for CO, 2.7 ppmv for CH4, 4.2 ppmv for H2, and 25 ppbv for NO2. We compare our emission ratios to those obtained in previous field and laboratory studies. The emission ratios, expressed as an average and as a range or as an average only, were: dCO/dCO2 5.3×10–2 (3–18×10–2); dCH4/dCO 5.3×10–2; dH2/dCO 2.4×10–1 and dNO2/dCO2 1.8×10–4 (1.5–2.2×10–4). The values found match those found during similar measurements, though our results point to rather vigorous burning in the savanna of western Africa.  相似文献

Distribution patterns and faunal composition of freshwater ostracods in large tidal river systems are poorly documented. In summer 1987, a faunal and distributional survey of freshwater ostracods was conducted at Stockport Flats on the Hudson River. The ostracod fauna of this tidal freshwater wetland contains exclusively freshwater species. Seven genera were represented among 2,928 specimens collected from three intertidal sampling stations. The ostracod fauna of the tidal freshwater Hudson is similar to that of large lakes, and is numerically dominated by a few widely distributed species.  相似文献

Raman vibrational spectra and X-ray diffractometer scans were obtained from experimentally shocked samples of oligoclase (An19) and andesine (An49). Some 11 oligoclase and 15 andesine targets were shocked between 24 and 40 GPa to address the transition from crystalline to diaplectic states and to explore differences in the structural state of diaplectic feldspar glasses (maskelynite) as a function of peak shock stress. Thy symmetrical VS (T-O-T) (T=Si or Al) stretch bands are the most persistent. They disappear, however, in the noise of an unusually strong luminescent spectrum at > 32 GPa in the oligoclase and at > 30 GPa in the andesine; i.e., at pressures where transition to diaplectic glass is complete. The Raman investigations yield a maskelynite structure that is probably one of a multitude of very small domains with some order, but with a large range of local properties on the scale of small domains, either in heterogeneous size-distribution of domains or in their detailed order, if not both. This results in a very large number of Raman photon-phonon frequencies unlike glasses derived from quenched melts. Our study corroborates conclusions by others, that diaplectic glasses may be the quench products of very dense, disordered phases that exist during shock compression and that subsequently relax to these unusually dense glasses that are only known from shock processes. An origin by relaxation of highly ordered, genuine high pressure polymorphs possessing the structure of hollandite is unlikely, as no evidence for any six-fold Si-coordination was found. Detailed luminescent emission spectra were taken of the oligoclase samples and they show disappearance of the IR band and a strengthening of the green band (the blue band could not be detected with a primary radiation of wavelength 448 nm). This supports previous views that the disappearance of IR emission is most likely caused by shock-induced changes of the crystal field near Fe3+ sites, rather than due to quenching by Fe2+. The X-ray studies were primarily intended to explore whether differences in structural states of maskelynite occur on sufficiently large scales to be detected by standard diffractometry methods. This is not the case. X-ray diffractometer patterns are grossly similar, if not identical, in samples shocked between 30 and 40 GPa and may not be used to fine-tune the shock histories of naturally produced diaplectic glasses.  相似文献

Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 238, 399–423] perform a model simulation which considers a generally lower palaeorography, a weaker ocean heat transport and an atmospheric CO2 concentration of 353 ppm. The Tortonian simulation of Steppuhn et al. [Steppuhn, A., Micheels, A., Geiger, G., Mosbrugger, V., 2006. Reconstructing the Late Miocene climate and oceanic heat flux using the AGCM ECHAM4 coupled to a mixed-layer ocean model with adjusted flux correction. Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 238, 399–423] demonstrates some realistic trends: the high latitudes are warmer than today and the meridional temperature gradient is reduced. However, the Tortonian run also indicates some insufficiencies such as too cool mid-latitudes which can be due to an underestimated pCO2 in the atmosphere. As a sensitivity study, we perform a further model experiment for which we additionally increase the atmospheric carbon dioxide (700 ppm). According to this CO2 sensitivity experiment, we find a global warming and a globally more intense water cycle as compared to the previous Tortonian run. Particularly the high latitudes are warmer in the Tortonian CO2 sensitivity run which leads to a lower amount of Arctic sea ice and a reduced equator-to-pole temperature difference. Our Tortonian CO2 sensitivity study basically agrees with results from recent climate model experiments which consider an increase of CO2 during the next century (e.g. [Cubasch, U., Meehl, G.A., Boer, G.J., Stouffer, R.J., Dix, M., Noda, A., Senior, C.A., Raper, S., Yap, K.S., 2001. Projections of Future Climate Change. In: Houghton, J.T., Y. Ding, D.J. Griggs, M. Noguer, P.J. van der Linden, X. Dai, K. Maskell, C.A. Johnson (eds.), Climate Change 2001: The Scientific Basis. Contribution of Working Group I to the Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 525–582]) suggesting that the climatic response on a higher atmospheric CO2 concentration is almost independent from the different settings of boundary conditions (Tortonian versus today). To validate the Tortonian model simulations, we perform a quantitative comparison with terrestrial proxy data. This comparison demonstrates that the Tortonian CO2 sensitivity experiment tends to be more realistic than the previous Tortonian simulation by Steppuhn et al. [Steppuhn, A., Micheels, A., Geiger, G., Mosbrugger, V., 2006. Reconstructing the Late Miocene climate and oceanic heat flux using the AGCM ECHAM4 coupled to a mixed-layer ocean model with adjusted flux correction. Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 238, 399–423]. However, a high carbon dioxide concentration of 700 ppm is questionable for the Late Miocene, and it cannot explain shortcomings of our Tortonian run with ‘normal’ CO2. In order to assess the fidelity of coral Sr/Ca for quantitative reconstructions of sea surface temperature variations, we have generated three monthly Sr/Ca time series from Porites corals from the lagoon of Peros Banhos (71°E, 5°S, Chagos Archipelago). We find that all three coral Sr/Ca time series are well correlated with instrumental records of sea surface temperature (SST) and air temperature. However, the intrinsic variance of the single-core Sr/Ca time series differs from core to core, limiting their use for quantitative estimates of past temperature variations. Averaging the single-core data improves the correlation with instrumental temperature (r > 0.7) and allows accurate estimates of interannual temperature variations (~0.35°C or better). All Sr/Ca time series indicate a shift towards warmer temperatures in the mid-1970s, which coincides with the most recent regime shift in the Pacific Ocean. However, the magnitude of the warming inferred from coral Sr/Ca differs from core to core and ranges from 0.26 to 0.75°C. The composite Sr/Ca record from Peros Banhos clearly captures the major climatic signals in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, i.e. the El Niño–southern oscillation and the Pacific decadal oscillation. Moreover, composite Sr/Ca is highly correlated with tropical mean temperatures (r = 0.7), suggesting that coral Sr/Ca time series from the tropical Indian Ocean will contribute to multi-proxy reconstructions of tropical mean temperatures.  相似文献

A group of low‐angle normal faults developed in banded gabbro of Moa Ophiolite, Cuba. The dark gabbro was cut into puddings by several normal faults, while light gabbro was just swelling in layer thickness. In Hongliuhe ophiolite at eastern segment of South Tien Shan Suture Zone in China, the extensional deformation concentrates on fine cumulus gabbro which is typically mylonitized. Abundant structural features were discovered in HLH ophiolite such as S‐C foliation, C’ foliation, extensional crenulation cleavage, small toughness normal fault, low‐angle normal faults and high‐angle normal faults. According to the above tectonic phenomenon from the ophiolite belts in Cuba and China, we will get the conclusion: the maximum principal compressive stress (b1) is vertical to cumulus bedding, and the maximum tensile stress (b3) is paralleling to cumulus bedding. Considering of the above evidence, the extensional tectonic event should developed at mid‐ocean ridge. Due to seafloor spreading, the maximum tensile stress is paralleling to cumulus layer, and extensional tectonic is kept in cumulus gabbro. In this way, normal faults developed in dark gabbro, while brittle‐ductile extensional developed in light gabbro. A large number of domes, folds paralleling to ocean ridge and detachment faults represented by low angle normal fault were discovered near ocean ridge in Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. In this way, materials from deep oceanic lithosphere (e.g. gabbro, mantle peridotite) outcrop at the crust surface of ocean basin. The above evidences from China and Cuba are consistent with extensional tectonic and metamorphic core complex from slowly and super‐slowly spreading Indian Ocean and Atlantic Oceanic lithosphere based on ODP. Therefore, extensional deformation in the ophiolite belt is of significant meaning for clarifying the formation process and mechanism of ancient oceanic basin.  相似文献
