Aquatic plants (macrophytes) can have a large effect on river hydraulics and geomorphology. Though, the extent to how plant morphological plasticity actively influences these feedbacks has received little scientific attention. The nymphaeid macrophyte species Nuphar lutea (L.) Smith is characterized by a distinct leaf duality. Floating leaves shade most of the submerged leaves thereby limiting light penetration in the water. Despite their apparent negligible photosynthetic role, submerged leaves of N. lutea remain intact during summer and contribute a significant part to the total biomass. Our results indicate that the submerged leaves are crucial in plant–flow interactions and hence in the engineering potential of the plant, i.e. the capacity to locally reduce flow velocities and to promote sedimentation, including organic matter deposition. Plant individuals growing in running river water were compared to individuals from adjacent oxbow lake water. The number and size of submerged leaves were significantly higher for river standing individuals and the accumulated sediment contained significantly more organic matter, total nitrogen and total phosphorus, and was characterized by a lower carbon/nitrogen ratio and a finer grain size. We therefore argue that the submerged N. lutea canopy in rivers has the ability to create a high‐nutrient, low hydrodynamic environment, resembling the conditions found in oxbow lakes. In the Erlenbach stream, a pre‐alpine steep channel in Switzerland, sediment transport has been monitored for more than 25 years. Near the confluence with the main valley river, stream flow is monitored and sediment is collected in a retention basin with a capacity of about 2000 m3. The basin is surveyed at regular intervals and after large flood events. In addition, sediment transport has been continuously monitored with piezoelectric bedload impact and geophone sensors since 1986. In 2008–2009, the measuring system in the Erlenbach stream was enhanced by installing an automatic system to obtain bedload samples. Movable metal baskets are mounted on a rail at the downstream wall of the large check dam above the retention basin, and they can be moved automatically into the flow to take bedload transport samples. The wire mesh of the baskets has a spacing of 10 mm to sample all sediment particles coarser than this size (which is about the limiting grain size detected by the geophones). The upgraded measuring system permits to obtain bedload samples over short sampling periods and to measure the grain size distribution of the transported material and its variation over time and with discharge. The analysis of calibration relationships for the geophone measuring system confirms findings from very similar measurements which were performed until 1999 with piezoelectric bedload impact sensors; there is a linear relationship between impulse counts and bedload mass passing over the sensors. Findings from flume experiments are used to discuss the most important factors which affect the calibration of the geophone signal. The bedload transport rates as measured by the moving baskets are among the highest measured in natural streams, with values of the order of several kilograms per meter per second. To constrain the origins of meteoritic nanodiamonds, the abundance ratios of stable C isotopes in acid residues from the carbonaceous chondritic meteorite Allende CV3 were measured using coordinated atom‐probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We combined our data with previously published APT data. A statistical analysis of this combined data set suggests an upper bound of 1 in 102 on the subpopulation that could have a large isotopic enrichment in 13C relative to 12C, consistent with the possible detection by secondary ion mass spectrometry of a similar enrichment in a 1 in 105 fraction, abundant enough to account for the Xe‐HL anomalous isotopic component carried by the acid residues. Supernovae are believed to be the source of Xe‐HL, leading to the mystery of why all other supernova minerals do not carry Xe‐HL. The lack of Xe‐HL in low‐density disordered supernova graphite suggests that the isotopically anomalous component is the nanodiamonds, but the disordered C in the residue is not ruled out. We discuss possible origins of the disordered C and implications of our results for proposed formation scenarios for nanodiamonds. At least 99% of the meteoritic acid residue exhibits no unambiguous evidence of presolar formation, although production with solar isotope ratios in asymptotic giant branch stars is not ruled out. Comparison of TEM and APT results indicates that a minority of the APT reconstructions may preferentially sample disordered C rather than nanodiamonds. If this is the case, a presolar origin for a larger fraction of the nanodiamonds remains possible.  相似文献

Trace element distribution in titanite overgrowths on rutile has been investigated experimentally at 600?°C, 400?MPa and fO2 near NiNiO buffer. Compositionally homogenous Cr- or Nb-doped synthetic rutile single crystals or Nb-containing natural rutile crystals were the source of Cr, Nb and Ti to synthesize titanite using the double-capsule technique. All element exchange with the source of Si, Ca and Al occurred via a NaCl–H2O fluid. Titanite forms quickly and exclusively around the rutile crystals. The titanite overgrowth separates rutile from the bulk fluid, and all elements from rutile dissolution have to pass through the titanite rim. Trace element concentrations in titanite show a considerable scatter in experiments with and without Al, although the average concentrations of Cr or Nb of titanite around compositionally homogeneous synthetic rutile approach the expected values for closed system conditions. Variability of Al with Cr or Nb in the titanite is not correlated. The Al zoning is irregular and patchy, and also the distribution of trace elements does not show systematic trends in the spatial distribution. In experiments using zoned natural rutile, the concentrations of Nb in titanite are related to the Nb zoning in rutile, but the contents also vary unsystematically. Under the controlled conditions of the experiment, the explanation for the strongly irregular spatial distribution is most likely due to variations in elemental concentrations during transport from the rutile along the titanite grain boundaries. The transport pathway is complex because grain boundary migration is important during titanite growth. Such irregular element distribution is also found in a natural sample of titanite overgrowth on rutile from an eclogite with retrograde overprint in the amphibolite facies. Transport of Ti and trace elements was focused on grain boundaries and shielded from the rutile as a source of these elements. We conclude that this type of zoning is not related to changes in P–T or composition in an open system, but solely controlled by transport in and through the titanite rim.  相似文献

From 14 deeps and other regions of the Red Sea totally 226 samples from 28 cores recovered during the VALDIVIA cruises (1971, 1972) were investigated according to their clay mineral content (<2μm resp. < 6.3 μm) after carbonate dissolution. Three facies groups are to distinguish:
  1. normal sediments: dominance of chlorite, kaolinite, illite, small amounts of smectite and sepiolite. Two palygorskite types are present only in a few samples.
  2. normal sediments with hydrothermal influence: clay mineral paragenesis similar like that of normal sediments; but increase of smectite and presence of goethite in each sample; partly small contents of talc.
  3. heavy metal deposits: dominance of iron-bearing smectite, partly with amorphous components resp. pure ore mineral assemblages with authigenic silicates (talc, quartz, opal, chrysotile, sepiolite, palygorskite, chlorite).
Crystallinity of the clay and ore minerals is independent from sedimentary overburden. Sepiolite shows in small amounts a wide distribution; palygorskite2 (d110=11.3 Å) yields locally an increased concentration in the range of pteropod layers cemented by aragonite. The environment of ore deposits is characterized by iron-bearing smectite besides the ore minerals.  相似文献

本文着重分析中国和北非沙漠地区沙、尘搬运输送的动力学机制,作者根据野外观察和观测数据,依持续时间和强度为标尺,对风进行了系统的描述和分类.导言部分首先阐述了造成沙漠地表温度差异的主要因素.一个至关重要的要素就是物质的热传导性.例如,坚硬的岩石表面的加热往往没有在松散的沙质表面的快,但在胶结紧实的岩石上,阳光加热可以影响到表面下lm深,而在松散的河流和风成砂上只可达30cma的深度.正是由于这种差异,在很小的范围内,裸露的基岩和沙面上的温度可以有20℃的区别,这种温差难免会导致空气的运动.由于沙面上的空气增温而向上运动,在垂直方向上形成一个"气泵”,而在水平方向上则形成小的锋面.当沙质表面范围较大时,则会产生干绝热对流过程,有时这个过程极为强烈,导致了携带沙、尘的"气尾”.这就是笔者所说的第1类起沙扬尘风.例如,沙漠地区的小"龙卷风”就属于这类.由坡面倾向、地表起伏和积云阴影等造成的增温差异都会形成这类沙尘的运动过程.文章中阐述到干绝热对流时,选用利比亚Hon-Graben,美国PanamitValley及北非的萨赫勒地区的例子.第2类沙尘现象是指增温面积较大时形成积云,干绝热对流十分强烈,对流过程上升到云层,起沙扬尘的面积之大已可以称为沙尘暴.文中叙述的例子是库尔勒和嘎顺诺尔的沙尘天气.文中划分的第3至第5类现象都与雷雨天气所诱发的气流运动直接相关.第3类指的是由单个雷雨气团造成的,第4类是由多个雷雨气团造成的,而第5类则是由大的雷雨天气所造成的.就沙尘暴的影响范围而言,第1至第4类只导致沙尘在就地或小范围内的移动,而第5类则会导致远距离甚至全球尺度上的沙尘输送.笔者所说的第6类沙尘搬运的形式是指沙尘随锋面的运动,诱发因子在北非是南下的极地气团,而在西非是西南季风.第7类沙尘运动则是由全球性的信风和西风天气体系所造成的.但在第4类以上,很难区分不同类型沙尘暴的诱发要素,原因是在信风和西风的锋面上常伴随出现多个或较大的雷雨气团.从沙尘天气过程的强度来讲,主要是第5至第7类会在区域地貌上留下烙印.低等类型的沙尘输送虽然通过对地表物质的搬运也会造就沙丘和风蚀地形,但其形态都很小.只有较大的天气系统才能塑造有主导地位的地貌形态.这种形态被J.Hovermann和H.Hagedorn定义为风营力地形,其在北非的分布上线可达海拔l000m,在垂直带上与其它地貌形态相间.在撒哈拉地区风地形仅出现在一个地貌带上.而在中国风营力地形则分布于3个高度范围的台阶上,其垂直带的形态变化类同于撒哈拉地区.在低台阶上分布上线为1800m,在中台阶上分布范围为2800~3200m,而在高台阶上则出现在4300~4900m的高度作者简介:DieterJakel男60岁教授地理学专业2000-10-25收稿范围内.但就垂直带谱、地貌过程和天气系统而言,中国和北非则不尽相同.  相似文献

Abstract– We report an analysis of instrumental observations of a very bright fireball which terminated with a meteorite fall near the town of Jesenice in Slovenia on April 9, 2009, at 0h59m46s UT. The fireball designated EN090409 was recorded photographically and photoelectrically by two southern stations of the Czech part of the European Fireball Network (EN). Simultaneously, a part of the luminous trajectory was also captured by two all‐sky CCD systems and one video camera of the Slovenian meteor network. In addition to these optical recordings, the sonic booms produced by the Jesenice fireball were detected at 16 seismic stations located within 150 km of the trajectory. From all these records, we reconstructed the fireball’s atmospheric trajectory, basic geophysical data, the possible impact area, and the original heliocentric orbit of the meteoroid. Using a detailed fireball light curve, we modeled the atmospheric fragmentation of the meteoroid. Both the atmospheric behavior and the heliocentric orbit proved to be quite normal in comparison with other observed meteorite falls. The Jesenice orbit is markedly different from the P?íbram and Neuschwanstein orbital meteorite pair, which fell on similar dates (April 7, 1959, and April 6, 2002, respectively). Three meteorites with a total weight of 3.6 kg (until April 2010) were found in a high mountain area near the town of Jesenice. Trees form a significant part of the urban vegetation. Their meteorological and climatological effects at all scales in urban environments make them a flexible tool for creating a landscape oriented to the needs of an urban dweller. This study aims at quantifying the spatio-temporal patterns of canopy temperature (T C) and canopy-to-air temperature difference (?T C) in relation to meteorological conditions and tree-specific (physiological) and urban site-specific characteristics. We observed T C and ?T C of 67 urban trees (18 species) using a high-resolution thermal-infrared (TIR) camera and meteorological measurements in the city of Berlin, Germany. TIR images were recorded at 1-min intervals over a period of 2?months from 1st July to 31st August 2010. The results showed that ?T C depends on tree species, leaf size and fraction of impervious surfaces. Average canopy temperature was nearly equal to air temperature. Species-specific maximum ?T C varied between 1.9?±?0.3?K (Populus nigra), 2.9?±?0.3?K (Quercus robur), 3.2?±?0.5?K (Fagus sylvatica), 3.9?±?1.0?K (Platanus acerifolia), 4.6?±?0.2?K (Acer pseudoplatanus), 5.0?±?0.5?K (A. platanoides) and 5.6?±?1.1?K (A. campestre). We analysed ?T C for a hot and dry period (A) and a warm and wet period (B). The range of species-specific ?T C at noon was nearly equal, i.e. 4.4?K for period A and 4.2?K for period B. Trees surrounded by high fraction of impervious surfaces showed consistently higher ?T C. Knowledge of species-specific canopy temperature and the impacts of urban structures are essential in order to optimise the benefits from trees in cities. However, comprehensive evaluation and optimisation should take the full range of climatological effects into account.  相似文献

In order to assess the fidelity of coral Sr/Ca for quantitative reconstructions of sea surface temperature variations, we have generated three monthly Sr/Ca time series from Porites corals from the lagoon of Peros Banhos (71°E, 5°S, Chagos Archipelago). We find that all three coral Sr/Ca time series are well correlated with instrumental records of sea surface temperature (SST) and air temperature. However, the intrinsic variance of the single-core Sr/Ca time series differs from core to core, limiting their use for quantitative estimates of past temperature variations. Averaging the single-core data improves the correlation with instrumental temperature (r > 0.7) and allows accurate estimates of interannual temperature variations (~0.35°C or better). All Sr/Ca time series indicate a shift towards warmer temperatures in the mid-1970s, which coincides with the most recent regime shift in the Pacific Ocean. However, the magnitude of the warming inferred from coral Sr/Ca differs from core to core and ranges from 0.26 to 0.75°C. The composite Sr/Ca record from Peros Banhos clearly captures the major climatic signals in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, i.e. the El Niño–southern oscillation and the Pacific decadal oscillation. Moreover, composite Sr/Ca is highly correlated with tropical mean temperatures (r = 0.7), suggesting that coral Sr/Ca time series from the tropical Indian Ocean will contribute to multi-proxy reconstructions of tropical mean temperatures.  相似文献
