Insights into collisional physics may be obtained by studying the asteroid belt, where large-scale collisions produced groups of asteroid fragments with similar orbits and spectra known as the asteroid families. Here we describe our initial study of the Karin cluster, a small asteroid family that formed 5.8±0.2 Myr ago in the outer main belt. The Karin cluster is an ideal ‘natural laboratory’ for testing the codes used to simulate large-scale collisions because the observed fragments produced by the 5.8-Ma collision suffered apparently only limited dynamical and collisional erosion. To date, we have performed more than 100 hydrocode simulations of impacts with non-rotating monolithic parent bodies. We found good fits to the size-frequency distribution of the observed fragments in the Karin cluster and to the ejection speeds inferred from their orbits. These results suggest that the Karin cluster was formed by a disruption of an ≈33-km-diameter asteroid, which represents a much larger parent body mass than previously estimated. The mass ratio between the parent body and the largest surviving fragment, (832) Karin, is ≈0.15-0.2, corresponding to a highly catastrophic event. Most of the parent body material was ejected as fragments ranging in size from yet-to-be-discovered sub-km members of the Karin cluster to dust grains. The impactor was ≈5.8 km across. We found that the ejections speeds of smaller fragments produced by the collision were larger than those of the larger fragments. The mean ejection speeds of >3-km-diameter fragments were . The model and observed ejection velocity fields have different morphologies perhaps pointing to a problem with our modeling and/or assumptions. We estimate that ∼5% of the large asteroid fragments created by the collision should have satellites detectable by direct imaging (separations larger than 0.1 arcsec). We also predict a large number of ejecta binary systems with tight orbits. These binaries, located in the outer main belt, could potentially be detected by lightcurve observations. Hydrocode modeling provides important constraints on the interior structure of asteroids. Our current work suggests that the parent asteroid of the Karin cluster may have been an unfractured (or perhaps only lightly fractured) monolithic object. Simulations of impacts into fractured/rubble pile targets were so far unable to produce the observed large gap between the first and second largest fragment in the Karin cluster, and the steep slope at small sizes (≈6.3 differential index). On the other hand, the parent asteroid of the Karin cluster was produced by an earlier disruptive collision that created the much larger, Koronis family some 2-3 Gyr ago. Standard interpretation of hydrocode modeling then suggests that the parent asteroid of the Karin cluster should have been formed as a rubble pile from Koronis family debris. X‐ray computed tomography has become a popular means for examining the interiors of meteorites and has been advocated for routine curation and for the examination of samples returned by missions. Here, we report the results of a blind test that indicate that CT imaging deposits a considerable radiation dose in a meteorite and seriously compromises its natural radiation record. Ten vials of the Bruderheim L6 chondrite were placed in CT imager and exposed to radiation levels typical for meteorite studies. Half were retained as controls. Their thermoluminescence (TL) properties were then measured in a blind test. Five of the samples had TL data unaltered from their original (~10 cps) while five had very strong signals (~20,000 cps). It was therefore very clear which samples had been in the CT scanner. For comparison, the natural TL signal from Antarctic meteorites is ~5000–50,000 cps. Using the methods developed for Antarctic meteorites, the apparent dose absorbed by the five test samples was calculated to be 83 ± 5 krad, comparable with the highest doses observed in Antarctic meteorites and freshly fallen meteorites. While these results do not preclude the use of CT scanners when scientifically justified, it should be remembered that the record of radiation exposure to ionizing radiations for the sample will be destroyed and that TL, or the related optically stimulated luminescence, are the primary modern techniques for radiation dosimetry. We present the lessons learned about the degradation observed in several space solar missions, based on contributions at the Workshop about On-Orbit Degradation of Solar and Space Weather Instruments that took place at the Solar Terrestrial Centre of Excellence (Royal Observatory of Belgium) in Brussels on 3 May 2012. The aim of this workshop was to open discussions related to the degradation observed in Sun-observing instruments exposed to the effects of the space environment. This article summarizes the various lessons learned and offers recommendations to reduce or correct expected degradation with the goal of increasing the useful lifespan of future and ongoing space missions. 相似文献

Long-term variations in north-south asymmetry of solar activity 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present a new set of data on relative sunspot number (total, northern hemisphere, and southern hemisphere), taken for the 37-yr period 1947 to 1983; this constitutes a particularly coherent and consistent set of data, taken by the same observer (Hisako Koyama) using the same observing instrument. These data are combined with earlier data (White and Trotter, 1977) on the variation of sunspot areas for both solar hemispheres from 1874 to 1971. The combined data, covering 110 years and 10 solar cycles, are examined for periodicity in solar activity north-south asymmetry. We show that, in general, northern hemisphere activity, displayed as either An/(An + As) or Rn/(Rn + Rs), peaks about two years after sunspot minimum. This peak is greater during even cycles, pointing to a 22-yr periodicity in north-south asymmetry in solar activity, suggesting that the asymmetry is related to the 22-yr solar magnetic cycle. We demonstrate that the largest and most protracted period of northern-hemisphere activity excess in the last 110 years has occurred from 1959 to 1970; we show that there is a strong correlation between northern activity excess and a cosmic-ray density gradient perpendicular to the ecliptic plane, pointing southward, which is evident in cosmic-ray diurnal variation data from the Embudo underground cosmic-ray telescope. 相似文献

Geobacter become dominant members of the microbial community when Fe(III)-reducing conditions develop as the result of organic contamination,
or when Fe(III) reduction is artificially stimulated. These results suggest that further understanding of the ecophysiology
of Geobacter species would aid in better prediction of the natural attenuation of organic contaminants under anaerobic conditions and in
the design of strategies for the bioremediation of subsurface metal contamination.

Measurements, made at a high subarctic, maritime, wetland tundra site, are presented for three different growing seasons. These are divided into hot-dry, normal-dry and normal-wet years and the behaviour of their surface energy and water balances is examined within the framework of a combination model. For periods of comparable energy availability, evapotranspiration during hot-dry conditions can be larger than during cooler and wetter periods. This results from small stomatal resistance in the sparse canopy of well-rooted sedges, and from the ability of peat soils to supply water under conditions of large atmospheric demand. This demand is expressed in terms of the vapour pressure deficit and it counteracts the large surface resistances which develop during dry periods. In many respects, the energy balance of a subarctic wetland tundra is comparable to observations and models for temperate agricultural and forest lands, in spite of the fact that the soils are organic, the vegetation canopy is sparse and there is continuous permafrost. A dry year promotes deeper thaw depths in the permafrost soils, during the growing season, than does a wet one. This is due to larger ground heat fluxes and larger soil thermal diffusivities. We concluded that maritime, wetland tundra, growing on peat soils, displays feedback mechanisms, which can offset the effects of moisture stress, caused by summer climate warming of a similar magnitude to that simulated by General Circulation Models for a 2 × CO2 scenario. 相似文献

The hazards of place framework developed by Cutter (1996) has been applied to several areas across the United States. This article tests the applicability of that model for analysis
of hydrological disasters in the municipio of San Juan, Puerto Rico. San Juan is chosen because it combines many socioeconomic attributes of a developing area while
offering data availability befitting its status as a US commonwealth. The interoperability of principal components and arithmetically
based methods for producing a social vulnerability layer are examined. For both methods, a basket of commonly cited demographic
variables representing social and economic vulnerability is extracted from Census 2000 sample (SF-3) data at the census block-group
level of analysis. These results provide insight on the strengths and weaknesses of the methods both methodologically and
regarding policy implementation. A look at the neighborhood of La Perla suggests complex local positive and negative effects
of local processes on vulnerability not captured by demographic analysis. These effects relate to possible census undercounts
