Iron–manganese oxide coatings form on a wide range of geologic samples where they have the ability to adsorb elements and potentially act as a mineral exploration/environmental monitoring tool. In this study, Fe–Mn oxide coatings on stream pebbles were collected from streams in four study areas located across the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The study locations were in areas of former copper mines (Tilt Cove and Betts Cove), carbonate geology (Robinsons River), and a metropolitan area (Rennies River). Collected pebbles underwent a simple sample preparation procedure and were then analyzed for a wide range of elements by LA-ICP-MS after optimization of the operating conditions. Water samples accompanied the pebbles, and these were analyzed for pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and a large selection of elements by ICP-MS. Multivariate statistics, in the form of Principal Component Factor Analysis (PCFA) was performed on both data sets. Graphs of the factor scores from the PCFA produced groupings of the samples that were related to geologic/environmental inputs. The loading of variables in each factor was related to the adsorption of the element either to the MnO2 or Fe2O3 phase with most elements except Cr and Cu displaying preferential adsorption to MnO2. Elemental Fe–Mn oxide coating concentrations were a result of the element's affinity (chalcophile, lithophile, or siderophile), pH of the environment, stream water concentration, and amount of each oxide phase present. Even with these complications, LA-ICP-MS analysis of Fe–Mn oxides was able to identify areas of heavy metal pollution and locate geologic inputs. 相似文献

Spatially resolved argon isotope measurements have been performed on neutron-irradiated samples of two Martian basalts (Los Angeles and Zagami) and two Martian olivine-phyric basalts (Dar al Gani (DaG) 476 and North West Africa (NWA) 1068). With a ∼50 μm diameter focused infrared laser beam, it has been possible to distinguish between argon isotopic signatures from host rock (matrix) minerals and localized shock melt products (pockets and veins). The concentrations of argon in analyzed phases from all four meteorites have been quantified using the measured J values, 40Ar/39Ar ratios and K2O wt% in each phase. Melt pockets contain, on average, 10 times more gas (7-24 ppb 40Ar) than shock veins and matrix minerals (0.3-3 ppb 40Ar). The 40Ar/36Ar ratio of the Martian atmosphere, estimated from melt pocket argon extractions corrected for cosmogenic 36Ar, is: Los Angeles (∼1852), Zagami (∼1744) and NWA 1068 (∼1403). In addition, Los Angeles shows evidence for variable mixing of two distinct trapped noble gas reservoirs: (1) Martian atmosphere in melt pockets, and (2) a trapped component, possibly Martian interior (40Ar/36Ar: 480-490) in matrix minerals. Average apparent 40Ar/39Ar ages determined for matrix minerals in the four analyzed meteorites are 1290 Ma (Los Angeles), 692 Ma (Zagami), 515 Ma (NWA 1068) and 1427 Ma (DaG 476). These 40Ar/39Ar apparent ages are substantially older than the ∼170-474 Ma radiometric ages given by other isotope dating techniques and reveal the presence of trapped 40Ar. Cosmic ray exposure (CRE) ages were measured using spallogenic 36Ar and 38Ar production. Los Angeles (3.1 ± 0.2 Ma), Zagami (2.9 ± 0.4 Ma) and NWA 1068 (2.0 ± 0.5 Ma) yielded ages within the range of previous determinations. DaG 476, however, yielded a young CRE age (0.7 ± 0.25 Ma), attributed to terrestrial alteration. The high spatial variation of argon indicates that the incorporation of Martian atmospheric argon into near-surface rocks is controlled by localized glass-bearing melts produced by shock processes. In particular, the larger (mm-size) melt pockets contain near end-member Martian atmospheric argon. Based on petrography, composition and argon isotopic data we conclude that the investigated melt pockets formed by localized in situ shock melting associated with ejection. Three processes may have led to atmosphere incorporation: (1) argon implantation due to atmospheric shock front collision with the Martian surface, (2) transformation of an atmosphere-filled cavity into a localized melt zone, and (3) shock implantation of atmosphere trapped in cracks, pores and fissures. 相似文献

Mixed sand and gravel beaches have been the subject of comparatively few studies in the UK. This paper describes the sediment distribution before, during and after a programme of beach nourishment along a section of mixed sand and gravel beach forming part of the Pevensey Bay Coastal Defences, in East Sussex, UK. The beach was recharged in September 2002, and beach profiles were measured along three cross-shore transects from August 2002 to February 2003. Sediment samples were taken along the transects between August and November 2002, and a total of 147 sediment samples were analysed, 40 before nourishment and 107 after nourishment. The majority of the sediment samples were strongly bimodal, with mean sizes varying between a minimum of 0.18 mm (2.48 ?) for the sand fraction and a maximum of 27 mm (− 4.74 ?) for the gravel. The recharge material was also bimodal but contained more fine sediment than the natural beach material, particularly on the upper beach. The recharge sediment had grain sizes and sorting similar to some of the natural material but lower bimodality parameters than any of the natural sediment. The sediment distributions after recharge contained significantly more fine sediment, particularly on the upper beach. Over time, the beach profile lowered and fine sediment appeared to be selectively transported seawards from the beachface. 相似文献

Some areas within ice sheet boundaries retain pre-existing landforms and thus either remained as ice free islands (nunataks) during glaciation, or were preserved under ice. Differentiating between these alternatives has significant implications for paleoenvironment, ice sheet surface elevation, and ice volume reconstructions. In the northern Swedish mountains, in situ cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al concentrations from glacial erratics on relict surfaces as well as glacially eroded bedrock adjacent to these surfaces, provide consistent last deglaciation exposure ages (∼8-13 kyr), confirming ice sheet overriding as opposed to ice free conditions. However, these ages contrast with exposure ages of 34-61 kyr on bedrock surfaces in these same relict areas, demonstrating that relict areas were preserved with little erosion through multiple glacial cycles. Based on the difference in radioactive decay between 26Al and 10Be, the measured nuclide concentration in one of these bedrock surfaces suggests that it remained largely unmodified for a minimum period of 845−418+461 kyr. These results indicate that relict areas need to be accounted for as frozen bed patches in basal boundary conditions for ice sheet models, and in landscape development models. Subglacial preservation also implies that source areas for glacial sediments in ocean cores are considerably smaller than the total area covered by ice sheets. These relict areas also have significance as potential long-term subglacial biologic refugia. 相似文献
