Sediments from Site 769 of the Ocean Drilling Program's Leg 124 provide a record of geomagnetic intensity variation over the past 110 ky. Using continous shipboard measurements exclusively, I estimate the variation in the geomagnetic field strength by employing low-field magnetic susceptibility as a normalization parameter for the measured remanence intensity. By calibrating the resultant relative paleointensity record against previously available Holocene age estimates of absolute paleointensity, I derive an estimate of virtual dipole moment since 110 ka. The record obtained from these Sulu Sea sediments is strikingly like that previously obtained from sediments of a similar age in the Mediterranean Basin with distinct intervals of low intensity near 15, 20, 40 and 65–70 ka. The Sulu sediments also indicate a low-intensity feature near 108 ka. Important differences in paleointensity estimates obtained from these different regions for the interval between 30 and 20 ka suggest that a relatively large non-dipolar component of the geomagnetic field might have been present at that time.  相似文献

Profiles of 210Pb over the Endeavour and North Cleft Segments of the Juan de Fuca Ridge are used to model a time scale for the scavenging, by hydrothermal plumes, of reactive elements in seawater. The hydrothermal plumes above these ridge segments are sites of intense scavenging removal of 210Pb. At Endeavour, the total 210Pb activities within the plume are as low as 8 dpm/100 l and dissolved activities are as low as 3 dpm/100 l. At the North Cleft, which is characterized by higher particulate Fe concentrations, the total 210Pb activities are 4.5 dpm/100 l, the dissolved activities are 1–2 dpm/100 l and the 210Pb activities are deficient with respect to the activity of the 210Po daughter. These are perhaps the lowest 210Pb activities ever measured in the deep sea. The large gradient of 210Pb between the plume and surrounding deep water suggests that scavenging is focused into the plumes through horizontal transport. The implication, therefore, is that this process might impact the ocean on a scale larger than that local to the ridge crest. By coupling published measurements of particle flux from Endeavour with 210Pb activities on particles trapped at that site, the total volume of seawater stripped of 210Pb per year for that site was calculated to be 7.4 × 1012 l/y. Globally, the extrapolated volume flux of seawater stripped of reactive constituents is 5.7 × 1015 l/y, such that the entire ocean is processed in this manner in 2.4×105 y. The geochemical cycle of elements with ocean residence times much shorter than this (e.g., Pb and Th) will not be greatly affected by hydrothermal scavenging. On the other hand, this process holds significance for the geochemistry of other elements scavenged by hydrothermal plumes, such as P and V, whose ocean residence times are > 104 y.  相似文献

Five lizardite-chrysotile type serpentinites from California, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic show oxygen isotope fractionations of 15.1 to 12.9 per mil between coexisting serpentine and magnetite (O18 magnetite=–7.6 to –4.6 per mil relative to SMOW). Nine antigorites (mainly from Vermont and S. E. Pennsylvania) show distinctly smaller fractionations of 8.7 to 4.8 per mil (O18 magnetite=–2.6 to +1.7 per mil). Two lizardite and chrysotile serpentinites dredged from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge exhibit fractionations of 10.0 and 12.4 per mil (O18 magnetite=–6.8 and –7.9 per mil, respectively), whereas an oceanic antigorite shows a value of 8.2 per mil (O18 magnetite=–6.2). These data all clearly indicate that the antigorites formed at higher temperatures than the chrysotilelizardites. Electron microprobe analyses of magnetites from the above samples show that they are chemically homogeneous and essentially pure Fe3O2. However, some magnetites from certain other samples that show a wide variation of Cr content also give very erratic oxygen isotopic results, suggesting non-equilibrium. An approximate serpentine-magnetite geothermometer curve was constructed by (1) extrapolation of observed O18 fractionations between coexisting chlorites and Fe-Ti oxides in low-grade pelitic schists whose isotopic temperatures are known from the quartz-muscovite O18 geothermometer, and (2) estimates of the O18 fractionation factor between chlorite and serpentine (assumed to be equal to unity). This serpentine-magnetite geothermometer suggests approximate equilibrium temperatures as follows: continental lizardite-chrysotile, 85° to 115° C; oceanic lizardite and chrysotile, 130° C and 185° C, respectively; oceanic antigorite, 235° C; and continental antigorites, 220° to 460° C.Contribution No. 2029 of the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California 91109.  相似文献

Summary The reflection and transmission of a transient plane wave by an ionosphere with a linear electron density profile and constant collision frequency are calculated. The exact frequency domain solution is inverted numerically, and the resultant reflected and transmitted waveforms are found to satisfy causality. A linearly varying, nondispersive dielectric half-space is also considered, but the nonphysical nature of the model causes the reflected waveform to be noncausal. Using convolution the waveforms for a step modulated sinusoid excitation are also obtained from the impulse response of the ionosphere. The results provide insight into the physical mechanism involved in the ionospheric propagation of HF electromagnetic pulsed signals.  相似文献

The paper reviews recent works on the Broken Hill ore body to see what data is available on the origin and history of the ore. A high grade metamorphism is recognizable (the Willyama Metamorphism) and this was followed by a number of retrograde metamorphic events. The characteristics of these events is described and this is followed by an analysis of the hypothesis that there is a stratigraphic control of Broken Hill type mineralization. It is concluded that any control that does exist is of a regional nature and that the evidence is equally as good for a restriction of mineralization to areas of high grade metamorphism. Many of the isotopic and geochronological results for Broken Hill are not diagnostic as far as ore genesis is concerned. They do present an internally consistent set of data that records three major events, the Willyama Metamorphism and introduction of the Broken Hill type mineralization at 1700 m. y., the intrusion of the Mundi Mundi Granite and cross cutting pegmatites at 1560 m. y., and retrograde metamorphism and introduction of the Thackaringa Mineralization at or prior to 500 m.y. The sulphides have been deformed in the retrograde schist zones and the ore therefore predates this event. But there is no evidence at the moment that unambiguously establishes that the sulphides were present prior to the Willyama Metamorphism. If it was present prior to or during the Willyama Metamorphism and there is no period of deformation prior to the first recognizable folds at Broken Hill, then the sulphide mass was initially grossly discordant with bedding.
Zusammenfassung Die Arbeit bringt Ergebnisse der neuesten Untersuchungen über die Broken-Hill-Lagerstätte anschließend an einen Überblick früherer Arbeiten. Der intensiven Willyama-Metamorphose folgen verschiedene retrograde Vorgänge, über die Einzelheiten mitgeteilt werden. Ferner wird die Hypothese einer stratigraphischen Kontrolle der Vererzung einer Prüfung unterzogen und festgestellt, daß die maßgeblichen Frakturen regionaler Natur sein müssen und daß die Beobachtungen somit eine Annahme der Vererzung der hochmetamorphen Gebiete ebenso stark stützt. Viele Resultate von Isotopenzusammensetzungen und geochronologischen Untersuchungen sind für Broken Hill nicht diagnostisch, wenigstens was die Erzgenese betrifft. Sie belegen 3 Hauptereignisse: die Willyama-Metamorphose und den Beginn der Vererzung um 1700.106a, die Intrusion des Mundi Mundi Granits und querschlägiger Pegmatite um 1560.106a und eine retrograde Metamorphose und den Eintritt der Thackaringa-Vererzung um oder vor 500.106a. Die Sulfide sind in der Zone der retrograden Schiefer deformiert worden, was beweist, daß die Vererzung älter ist als dieses Ereignis. Es gibt aber z. Z. keinen Beweis, daß die Sulfide vor der Willyama Metamorphose vorhanden gewesen sind. Wenn sie vor oder während dieses Ereignisses vorhanden gewesen sind und wenn vor der Zeit der ersten deutlichen Falten in Broken Hill keine Deformation stattgefunden hat, dann war die Sulfidmasse ursprünglich in der Schichtung stark diskordant.
