Generally, the intensity and magnitude of explosive volcanic activity increase in parallel with SiO2 content. Pyroclastic-flow-forming eruptions in the Colli Albani ultrapotassic volcanic district (Italy) represent the most
striking exception on a global scale, with volumes on the order of tens of cubic kilometres and K-foiditic compositions (SiO2 even <42 wt.%). Here, we reconstruct the pre-eruptive scenario and event dynamics of the ~456 ka Pozzolane Rosse (PR) eruption,
the largest mafic explosive event of the Colli Albani district. In particular, we focus on the driving mechanisms for the
unusually explosive eruption of a low-viscosity, mafic magma. Geologic, petrographic and geochemical data with mass balance
calculations, supported by experimental data for Colli Albani magma compositions, provide evidence for significant ingestion
of carbonate wall rocks by the Pozzolane Rosse K-foiditic magma. Moreover, the scattered occurrence of cored bombs in Pozzolane
Rosse pyroclastic-flow deposits records carbonate entrainment even at the eruptive time scale, as also tested quantitatively
by thermal modelling of magma–carbonate interaction and carbonate assimilation experiments. We suggest that the addition of
free CO2 from decarbonation of country rocks was the major factor controlling magma explosivity. High CO2 activity in the volatile component, coupled with magma depressurisation, produced extensive leucite crystallisation at short
time scales, resulting in a dramatic increase in magma viscosity and volatile pressurisation, which was manifested a change
of eruptive dynamics from early effusion to the Pozzolane Rosse's highly explosive eruption climax. 相似文献
In order to unravel the tectonic evolution of the north-central sector of the Sicily Channel (Central Mediterranean), a seismo-stratigraphic analysis of single- and multi-channel seismic reflection profiles has been carried out. This allowed to identify, between 20 and 50 km offshore the central-southern coast of Sicily, a ~80-km-long deformation belt, characterized by a set of WNW–ESE to NW–SE fault segments showing a poly-phasic activity. Within this belt, we observed: i) Miocene normal faults reactivated during Zanclean–Piacenzian time by dextral strike-slip motion, as a consequence of the Africa–Europe convergence; ii) releasing and restraining bend geometries forming well-developed pull-apart basins and compressive structures. In the central and western sectors of the belt, we identified local transpressional reactivations of Piacenzian time, attested by well-defined compressive features like push-up structures and fault-bend anticlines. The reconstruction of timing and style of tectonic deformation suggest a strike-slip reactivation of inherited normal faults and the local subsequent positive tectonic inversion, often documented along oblique thrust ramps. This pattern represents a key for an improved knowledge of the structural style of foreland fold-and-thrust belts propagating in a preexisting extensional domain. With regard to active tectonics and seismic hazards, recent GPS data and local seismicity events suggest that this deformation process could be still active and accomplished through deep-buried structures; moreover, several normal faults showing moderate displacements have been identified on top of the Madrepore Bank and Malta High, offsetting the Late Quaternary deposits. Finally, inside the northern part of the Gela Basin, multiple slope failures, originated during Pleistocene by the further advancing of the Gela Nappe, reveal tectonically induced potential instability processes.
Maar volcanoes represent a common volcano type which is produced by the explosive interaction of magma with external water.
Here, we provide information on a number of maars in the ultrapotassic Sabatini Volcanic District (SVD, Roman Province) as
young as ∼90 ka. The SVD maars are characterised in terms of crater and ejecta ring morphologies, eruptive successions and
magma compositions, in light of the local substrate settings, with the aim of assessing magma–water interaction conditions,
eruption energetics and genetic mechanisms. Feeder magmas spanned the whole SVD differentiation trend from trachybasalts–shoshonites
to phonolites. From the ejected lithic fragments from aquifer rocks, the range of depth of magma–water explosive interaction
is estimated to have been mostly at ∼400–600 m below ground level, with a single occurrence of surficial interaction in palustrine–lacustrine
environment. In particular, the interaction with external water may have triggered the explosive behaviour of poorly differentiated
magmas, whereas it may have acted only as a late controlling factor of the degree of fragmentation and eruption style for
the most differentiated magma batches during low-flux ascent in an incipiently fragmented state. Crater sizes, ejecta volumes
and ballistic data allow a reconstruction of the energy budget of SVD maar-forming eruptions. Erupted tephra volumes from
either monogenetic or polygenetic maars ranged 0.004–0.07 km3 during individual maar-forming eruptions, with corresponding total magma thermal energies of 8 × 1015–4 × 1017 J. Based on energy partitioning and volume balance of erupted magmas and lithic fractions vs. crater holes, we consider the
different contributions of explosive excavation of the substrate vs. subsidence in forming the SVD maar craters. Following
available models based on crater sizes, highly variable fractions (5–50%) of the magma thermal energies would have been required
for crater excavation. It appears that subsidence may have played a major role in some SVD maars characterised by low lithic
contents, whilst substrate excavation became increasingly significant with increasing degrees of aquifer fragmentation. 相似文献
Ground motion produced by low magnitude earthquakes can be used to predict peak values in high seismic risk areas where large earthquakes data are not available. In the present work 20 local earthquakes (MD∈[?0.3, 2.2]) occurred in the Campi Flegrei caldera during the last decade were analyzed. We followed this strategy: empirical relations were used to calibrate synthetic modeling, accounting for the source features and wave propagation effects. Once the source and path parameters of ground motion simulation were obtained from the reference data set, we extrapolated scenarios for stronger earthquakes for which real data are not available. The procedure is structured in two steps: (1) evaluation of ground motion prediction equation for Campi Flegrei area and assessment of input parameters for the source, path and site effects in order to use the finite fault stochastic approach (EXSIM code); (2) simulation of two moderate-to-large earthquake scenarios for which only historical data or partial information are available (Mw4.2 and Mw5.4). The results show that the investigated area is characterized by high attenuation of peak amplitude and not negligible site effects. The stochastic approach has revealed a good tool to calibrate source, path and site parameters on small earthquakes and to generate large earthquake scenario. The investigated magnitude range represents a lower limit to apply the stochastic method as a calibration tool, due to the small size of involved faults (fault length around 200/300 m). 相似文献
Piles subjected to lateral loading can create problems in soil-structure interaction. Several differing methods of analysis have been proposed to solve the problem of laterally loaded piles, resulting in the determination of pile bending and the bending moment as a function of depth below soil surface. These piles are widely used to support laterally loaded piles, such as bridge pillars, offshore platforms, communication towers and others. This study presents an analytical solution to Miche’s problem as a continuous function of depth: deflection and moment, as well as a dimensional plots to be used in projects involving piles subjected to laterally loading only including data concerning laterally loading test and pile geometry. A new formula is presented to calculate the pile head displacement as well as an equation to determine maximum moment for a generalized Miche model and further analysis. In addition, this paper proposes an equation for the determination of constant horizontal subgrade reaction \((n_{h})\) based on the CPT in-situ test and the geometric characteristics of the pile. Calibration of the analytical model showed good fit and conservative results regarding inclinometer data from an bored pile and good agreement with the literature results.
Digestive glands of the mangrove mussel Mytella guyanensis, collected at one non-polluted site (site 1) and two polluted sites (sites 2 and 3), were analysed for different antioxidant defenses, lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine levels were enhanced at the polluted sites. With the exception of superoxide dismutase, the activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase were also higher at the polluted sites. Greater increases were observed in glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase and etoxyresorufine-O-deethylase activities at the polluted sites. Conversely, reduced glutathione content was higher at the control site. Trace metal contents in mussels collected at polluted sites were increased compared to the control site, and there were strong positive correlations between TBARS and Cu and Pb contents. M. guyanensis is routinely exposed to an oxidative stress condition at both polluted sites, and considering xenobiotic bioaccumulation in bivalve molluscs, the mangrove mussel represents an excellent bioindicator for environmental monitoring studies. 相似文献
