ABSTRACT

A 3D forest monitoring system, called FORSAT (a satellite very high resolution image processing platform for forest assessment), was developed for the extraction of 3D geometric forest information from very high resolution (VHR) satellite imagery and the automatic 3D change detection. FORSAT is composed of two complementary tasks: (1) the geometric and radiometric processing of satellite optical imagery and digital surface model (DSM) reconstruction by using a precise and robust image matching approach specially designed for VHR satellite imagery, (2) 3D surface comparison for change detection. It allows the users to import DSMs, align them using an advanced 3D surface matching approach and calculate the 3D differences and volume changes (together with precision values) between epochs. FORSAT is a single source and flexible forest information solution, allowing expert and non-expert remote sensing users to monitor forests in three and four (time) dimensions. The geometric resolution and thematic content of VHR optical imagery are sufficient for many forest information needs such as deforestation, clear-cut and fire severity mapping. The capacity and benefits of FORSAT, as a forest information system contributing to the sustainable forest management, have been tested and validated in case studies located in Austria, Switzerland and Spain.  相似文献

Gold, a principal ore commodity, is sought in third world countries, which are situated mainly in the tropics, where extensive lateritic terrains exist. The high value of gold on the international market and balance of payment problems cause gold to be especially important. Present intensive propecting for gold in the Third World countries are, for those reasons, in lateritic terrains. Laterites, formed during the Tertiary and the Recent in inner tropical morphoclimatic zones covered by dense rain forests, in places such as the Amazon region and West Africa, are presently undergoing strong weathering and erosion that truncates lateritic profiles. Consequently, the thick soils still forming today cover in different places, different parts of truncated profiles. Samples of thick soils taken from the surface down, may begin not at the original top of the laterite but somewhere along the profile. Inasmuch as elements in lateritic profiles are not homogeneously distributed, problems in interpretation can result. Gold distribution in non-truncated laterites tends to be sigmoidal in distribution. Two convexities (highest contents) can be distinguished: one in surficial iron crusts or equivalents, the other at the base of saprolite. The sigmoidal curve can be cut off, strongly modified, or concealed by tropical weathering. The intense weathering can diminish concentrations, i.e., elements can be dispersed. Geochemical exploration becomes difficult, because interpretations of the geochemical anomalies based on high concentrations becomes unreliable. If the amount of truncation of lateritic profiles can be assessed, weak or even negative anomalies can become as good or better than strong anomalies.  相似文献

Oxidative stress related investigations to monitor the impact of the pollutant discharges into the Venice lagoon (Italy) originating from anthropogenic activities (raw sewage water, agricultural and industrial effluents, oil tanker traffic), on marine organisms have classically been carried out by analyzing specific, single antioxidants (i.e. catalase, superoxide dismutase). In this paper, two studies are reported where the total oxyradical scavenging capacity assay (TOSC) was selected and measured toward peroxyl, and hydroxyl free radicals, and peroxynitrite in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) transplanted into the Venice city and throughout the lagoon to measure the biological effects of anthropogenic activities. In the first experiment, mussels from a clean site (farm) were transplanted to the urban area of Venice for 0, 1, 2 and 4 weeks; cytosolic TOSC toward peroxyl and hydroxyl free radicals, and peroxynitrite revealed that the transplantation process caused a stress (handling stress, anoxia, oxidative burst) resulting in a reduction of TOSC in both control and urban sites, therefore, preventing clear interpretation of the data after one week. At week 2, a significant TOSC reduction (P < 0.05) toward peroxyl and hydroxyl radicals in the urban site revealed that mussels experienced oxidative pressure exerted by pollutants. Most TOSC values returned to initial levels at week 4; however, TOSC induction was noticed in the control group toward peroxyl and hydroxyl radicals while in the exposed group it was not indicating an inhibition of the oxidative metabolism. In the second experiment, mussels were deployed at seven different sites throughout the lagoon. After five weeks of exposure, significant TOSC reduction was measured (P < 0.05) toward peroxyl for Palude della Rosa, Chioggia and Valle Millecampi, toward hydroxyl radicals for Valle Millecampi and Campalto and toward peroxynitrite for Valle Millecampi. Although these data indicate a depletion of the low molecular weight scavengers, additional biomarkers are needed to draw a conclusion on the health of the mussels. TOSC was proved to be an interesting health index parameter to measure pollution impact in a transplantation study provided that the mussels are exposed for two weeks and a control is run in parallel.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to the additional use, other than ground water exploration, of surface geoelectrical sounding data for aquifer hydraulic parameter estimation. In a mesoscopic framework, approximated analytical equations are developed separately for saline and for fresh water saturations. A few existing useful aquifer models, both for clean and shaley sandstones, are discussed in terms of their electrical and hydraulic effects, along with the linkage between the two. These equations are derived for insight and physical understanding of the phenomenon. In a macroscopic scale, a general aquifer model is proposed and analytical relations are derived for meaningful estimation, with a higher level of confidence, of hydraulic parameter from electrical parameters. The physical reasons for two different equations at the macroscopic level are explicitly explained to avoid confusion. Numerical examples from existing literature are reproduced to buttress our viewpoint.  相似文献

Summary Magnetic hematite (α-Fe2O3) and goethite (α-FeOOH) nanoparticles, formed in the abandoned Libiola Mine (Liguria, Italy) as a result of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) processes that involved sulfide-bearing rocks and sulfide-rich waste material, were investigated through the study of their magnetic properties in combination with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Both techniques revealed that the behaviour of the nanominerals involved was predominantly superparamagnetic. In contrast, the bulk antiferromagnetic behaviour of both hematite and goethite was substantially reduced. The observed magnetic properties reflected a great variability in the particle dimensions and confirmed that both nanominerals were the transformation products of a metastable amorphous species. Moreover, two peculiar phenomena were hypothesised: the transformation to hematite may occur before the coarsening of the amorphous transient and hematite and goethite can interconvert without intermediate crystallisation of metastable precursors. Goethite, in fact, appears to be formed as an alteration product of hematite, after a drastic change of the physico-chemical boundary conditions.  相似文献

This paper reviews the rotation of T Tauri stars. It summarizes the results of a complete bibliographical survey of all photometric and spectroscopic data available in connection with rotation studies of these stars. It is shown that T Tauri stars are slow rotators. More than half of the stars in the sample have been found to have v sin i < 25 km/s. Furthermore, the histogram for the photometric periods of rotation is clearly bimodal, with a peak at approximately 3 days and another at around 8 days. Al- and F-rich titanite (3.862O3 <9.33 wt%, 0.931(F, OH)1Ti-1O-1 substitution within single crystals, particularly at grain boundaries with omphacite and/or phengite. In-situ ion microprobe U-Pb analysis of titanite domains that have various Al and F contents yielded apparent 206Pb/238U ages scattering between 283 and 153 Ma. Chemical and petrological data are indispensable to interpret this complex age distribution, and the good correlation between 206Pb/238U ratios and Al content indicates that the Al- and F-rich titanite was formed during pre-Alpine metamorphism (𔕑ᆟ Ma). Progressively younger ages are obtained in domains with decreasing Al and F content, suggesting that partial chemical re-equilibration was responsible for the incomplete isotopic resetting during Alpine metamorphism. Petrological and U-Pb data show that Al- and F-rich titanite should be used with caution to infer high-pressure conditions in polymetamorphic carbonate systems.  相似文献

Chemosynthetic carbonates, identified by isotopic, palaeoecological and sedimentological features, are concentrated in middle-late Miocene satellite and foredeep deposits of the northern Apennines. Chemoherms in the foredeep are hosted in thick pelitic intervals, probably deposited in intrabasinal structural highs, which are entirely or partly involved in large slumps, in many cases associated with extrabasinal slides. Sediment textures in carbonates and in the enclosing foredeep pelitic sediments indicate a link between hydrocarbon-fluid venting, sediment deformation and mobilisation, and tectonics. The intensity and style of fluid release phases directly influenced chemoherm typology, and also determined overpressure conditions in low shear strength pelitic sediments, favouring sediment mobilisation and influencing slope instability, which widely affected the Apennine foredeep. Chemosynthetic carbonates are associated with sites of tectonically fractured and compressed sediments in the Apennine foredeep-thrust belt system, thus indicating a relation with the tectonic loading of the Apennine thrust-sheets, which favoured fluid expulsion along forerunner faults. Possible gas hydrate contributions to fluid expulsion processes are discussed, based on sediment textures compared with modern vent areas. Finally, sediment instability may have facilitated a large amount of fluid escape, thus stopping carbonate precipitation.  相似文献

The differences between optical and X-ray structures of galaxy clusters are discussed. We analyse in detail 7 Abell clusters. There is an increasing number of arguments in favour of different distributions of galaxies, gas, and dark matter in many clusters. We argue that most clusters present sub-structures at least in the gaseous and galactic components and, moreover, the subclustering of different components does not always coincide. Such arguments strongly support the idea that most galaxy clusters are by far more complex systems than accepted until now and are usually not in an hydrostatic isothermal equilibrium.  相似文献

The paper provides insight into factors affecting the prediction of seismic pore-water pressure build up in clean sands and sand–silt mixtures for modeling purposes. Laboratory pore pressure measurements were conducted using stress-controlled undrained cyclic simple shear (CSS) tests carried out on both reconstituted and undisturbed specimens of silty sands under different initial conditions (density state, effective vertical stress, initial fabric and fines content). Test results were interpreted by using a damage concept-based model which is actually implemented for clean sands in non-linear time domain site response analysis codes. In the present work, such a model was properly modified for sands having fines contents higher than 35%. The general applicability of the modified procedure for predicting pore water pressure response of silty sands under irregular shear stress loading using data from stress-controlled CSS tests was also verified and all factors affecting calibration parameters of the model were throughly analyzed.  相似文献
