The occurrence of harmful epiphytic dinoflagellates is of concern to scientists, the aquaculture industry, and government due to their toxicity not only to marine organisms but also to humans. There have been no studies on the abundance of the epiphytic dinoflagellates in Korean waters. We explored the presence of epiphytic dinoflagellates in the coastal waters off Jeju Island, southwestern Korea. Furthermore, we measured the abundance of epiphytic dinoflagellates on the thalli of 24 different macroalgae, collected from five different locations in October 2009. Five epiphytic dinoflagellate genera Amphidinium, Coolia, Gambierdiscus, Ostreopsis, and Prorocentrum were found. These five genera were observed on the thalli of the macroalgae Chordaria flagelliformis, Martensia sp., Padina arborescens, and Sargassum sp., while none were observed exceptionally on Codium fragile. The abundance of Ostreopsis spp. was highest on Derbesia sp. (8,660 cells/g wet weight), while that of Gambierdiscus spp. was highest on Martensia sp. (4,870 cells/g-ww). The maximum abundances of Amphidinium spp., Coolia spp., and Prorocentrum spp. were 410, 710, and 300 cells/g-ww, respectively. The maximum abundance of Coolia spp., Gambierdiscus spp., and Ostreopsis spp. obtained in the present study was lower than for other locations reported in literature. The results of the present study suggest that the presence and abundance of epiphytic dinoflagellates may be related to the macroalgal species of the coastal waters of Jeju Island.  相似文献

A genetic algorithm was used to optimize the parameters of the two-dimensional Storm Surge/Tide Operational Model (STORM) to improve sea level predictions.The genetic algorithm was applied to nine typhoons that affected the Korean Peninsula during 2005-2007.The following model parameters were used:the bottom drag coefficient,the background horizontal diffusivity,Smagorinski’s horizontal viscosity,and the sea level pressure scaling.Generally,the simulation results using the optimized,mean,and median parameter values improved sea level predictions.The four estimated parameters improved the sea level prediction by 76% and 54% in the bias and root mean square error for Typhoon Kalmaegi (0807) in 2008,respectively.One-month simulations of February and August 2008 were also improved using the estimated parameters.This study demonstrates that parameter optimization on STORM can improve sea level prediction.  相似文献

Seismic inverse modeling, which transforms appropriately processed geophysical data into the physical properties of the Earth, is an essential process for reservoir characterization. This paper proposes a work flow based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo method consistent with geology, well-logs, seismic data, and rock-physics information. It uses direct sampling as a multiple-point geostatistical method for generating realizations from the prior distribution, and Metropolis sampling with adaptive spatial resampling to perform an approximate sampling from the posterior distribution, conditioned to the geophysical data. Because it can assess important uncertainties, sampling is a more general approach than just finding the most likely model. However, since rejection sampling requires a large number of evaluations for generating the posterior distribution, it is inefficient and not suitable for reservoir modeling. Metropolis sampling is able to perform an equivalent sampling by forming a Markov chain. The iterative spatial resampling algorithm perturbs realizations of a spatially dependent variable, while preserving its spatial structure by conditioning to subset points. However, in most practical applications, when the subset conditioning points are selected at random, it can get stuck for a very long time in a non-optimal local minimum. In this paper it is demonstrated that adaptive subset sampling improves the efficiency of iterative spatial resampling. Depending on the acceptance/rejection criteria, it is possible to obtain a chain of geostatistical realizations aimed at characterizing the posterior distribution with Metropolis sampling. The validity and applicability of the proposed method are illustrated by results for seismic lithofacies inversion on the Stanford VI synthetic test sets.  相似文献

The discharge and water level of a gaining stream are known to be maintained during dry spells by baseflow, which is defined as discharge from underground storage. However, the effect of baseflow on a real river is not well known because direct measurements of baseflow in field are difficult to conduct. Therefore, this study attempts to clarify the contribution of baseflow to streamflow and the extent to which the water level is maintained even during dry spells. A digital filter technique is applied to the records of daily mean streamflow in order to estimate the amount of baseflow, and the lateral distribution method is applied to irregular cross sections at observational sites to obtain the stage–discharge rate curve. Through a comparison of the observed data and calculation results, the amount of baseflow is estimated across the channel, in addition to the maximum water level retained during dry spells in relation to the baseflow. Finally, based on the results of an energy conservation model, this study proposes that the source of the amount of baseflow estimated across a channel section may be different from that of the water level maintained during dry spells.  相似文献

Recent field and retrospective data were combined to investigate variations from 1984 to 1998 in the spring abundance of dominant copepods in the Yellow Sea. A calanoid copepod, Calanus sinicus, was chosen to assess the long-term changes in abundance associated with temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a and predator abundance. Average anomalies of sea surface temperature (SST), salinity, and the abundance of C. sinicus were positive in the 1990s and negative in the 1980s. The average abundances of C. sinicus in the study area in the 1990s were also significantly higher than those in the 1980s (p<0.01). Catches of the anchovy Engraulis japonicus, a predator of C. sinicus, showed a decreasing trend during the study period. The higher abundances of C. sinicus in the 1990s may have been affected by an increase in water temperature and a decrease in predators, without distinctive changes in chlorophyll-a concentrations during the study period.  相似文献

Recurrence characteristics of a Quaternary fault are generally investigated on the basis of field properties that are rapidly degraded by chemical weathering and erosion in warm humid climates. Here we show that in intense weathering environments, mineralogical and micromorphological investigations are valuable in paleoseismological reconstruction. A weathering profile developed in Late Quaternary marine terrace deposits along the southeastern coast of the Korean Peninsula was disturbed by tectonic movement that appears to be a simple one-time reverse faulting event based on field observations. A comparative analysis of the mineralogy, micromorphology, and chemistry of the weathering profile and fault gouge, however, reveals that both the microfissures in the deformed weathering profile and larger void spaces along the fault plane were filled with multi-stage accumulations of illuvial clay and silt minerals of detrital origin, suggesting a repetition of fissuring and subsequent sealing in the weathering profile as it underwent continuous mineralogical transformation and particle translocation. We reconstruct a sequence of multiple faulting events unrecognized in previous field surveys, which requires revision of the view that the Korean Peninsula was tectonically stable, during the Late Quaternary.  相似文献

The gravity-geologic method (GGM) was implemented for 2′ by 2′ bathymetric determinations in a 1.6° longitude-by-1.0° latitude region centered on the eastern end of the Shackleton Fracture Zone in the Drake Passage, Antarctica. The GGM used the Bouguer slab approximation to process satellite altimetry-derived marine free-air gravity anomalies and 6,548 local shipborne bathymetric sounding measurements from the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute to update the surrounding off-track bathymetry. The limitations of the Bouguer slab for modeling the gravity effects of variable density, rugged bathymetric relief at distances up to several kilometers, were mitigated by establishing ‘tuning’ densities that stabilized the GGM predictions. Tests using two-thirds of the shipborne bathymetric measurements to estimate the remaining third indicated that the tuning densities minimized root-mean-square deviations to about 29 m. The optimum GGM bathymetry model honoring all the ship observations correlated very well with widely available bathymetry models, despite local differences that ranged up to a few kilometers. The great analytical simplicity of GGM facilitates accurately and efficiently updating bathymetry as new gravity and bathymetric sounding data become available. Furthermore, the availability of marine free-air gravity anomaly data ensures that the GGM is more effective than simply extrapolating or interpolating ship bathymetry coverage into unmapped regions.  相似文献

Substantial reduction in Arctic sea ice in recent decades has intensified air-sea interaction over the Arctic Ocean and has altered atmospheric states in the Arctic and surrounding high-latitude regions. This study has found that the atmospheric responses related to Arctic sea-ice melt in the cold season (October–March) depend on sea-ice fraction and are very sensitive to in situ sea surface temperature (SST) from a series of atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) simulations in which multiple combinations of SSTs and sea-ice concentrations are prescribed in the Arctic Ocean. It has been found that the amplitude of surface warming over the melted sea-ice region is controlled by concurrent in situ SST even if these simulations are forced by the same sea-ice concentration. Much of the sensitivity of surface warming to in situ SST are related with large changes in surface heat fluxes such as the outgoing long-wave flux in early winter (October–December) and the sensible and latent heat fluxes for the entire cold season. Vertical extension of surface warming and moistening is sensitive to these changes as well; the associated condensational heating modulates a static stability in the lower troposphere. This study also indicates that changes in SST fields in AGCM simulations must be implemented with extra care, especially in the melted sea-ice region in the Arctic. The statistical method introduced in this study for adjusting SSTs in conjunction with a given sea-ice change can help to model the atmospheric response to sea-ice loss more accurately.  相似文献

Radiocesium reaction with illite and organic matter in marine sediment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The mineralogical effect on the (137)Cs reaction with marine sediment has not been systematically studied yet, even though illite has been known to adsorb Cs preferentially on its frayed edge sites in a low Cs concentration. Ninety-three marine sediment samples were collected near Yangnam, Korea for quantitative X-ray-diffraction (XRD), gamma-ray, and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. Illite content was in the range of 0-23 wt.% and those of (137)Cs and TOC were minimum detectable activity (MDA) approximately 7.19 Bq/kg-dry and approximately 3.32%, respectively. The illite content in the marine sediment showed a good relationship with the (137)Cs content (R(2)=0.69), but with an increase in the illite content, the relationship became less linear. This trend can be clearly shown in two groups of samples with different size fractions (< and >5Mdvarphi). For the samples of larger particle sizes (low contents of illite), the relationship is linear, but for the samples of the smaller particle sizes (high illite content) it is less linear with a decreased slope, indicating that increase in illite content does not significantly contribute to the fixation of (137)Cs in marine sediment. Rather, the TOC has a more linear relationship with (137)Cs content with no slope change in all particle size ranges. This may indicate that humic materials in marine sediment block the access of (137)Cs to the frayed edge site and reduces the adsorption of (137)Cs on illite and that the organic materials in marine sediment play more important roles in adsorbing Cs than illite.  相似文献

Recent changes in climate and environmental conditions have had great negative effects such as decreasing sea ice thickness and the extent of Arctic sea ice floes that support ice-related organisms. However, limited field observations hinder the understanding of the impacts of the current changes in the previously ice-covered regions on sea ice algae and other ice-related ecosystems. Our main objective in this study was to measure recent primary production of ice algae and their relative contribution to total primary production (ice plus pelagic primary production). In-situ primary productivity experiments with a new incubation system for ice algae were conducted in 3 sea ice cores at 2 different ice camps in the northern Chukchi Sea, 2014, using a 13C and 15N isotope tracer technique. A new incubation system was tested for conducting primary productivity experiments on ice algae that has several advantages over previous incubation methods, enabling stable carbon and nitrogen uptake experiments on ice algae under more natural environmental conditions. The vertical C-shaped distributions of the ice algal chl-a, with elevated concentrations at the top and bottom of the sea ice were observed in all cores, which is unusual for Arctic sea ice. The mean chl-a concentration (0.05 ± 0.03 mg chl-a m?3) and the daily carbon uptake rates (ranging from 0.55 to 2.23 mg C m?2 d?1) for the ice algae were much lower in this study than in previous studies in the Arctic Ocean. This is likely because of the late sampling periods and thus the substantial melting occurring. Ice algae contributed 1.5–5.7% of the total particulate organic carbon (POC) contents of the combined euphotic water columns and sea ice floes. In comparison, ice algae contributed 4.8–8.6% to the total primary production which is greater than previously reported in the Arctic Ocean. If all of the ice-associated productions were included, the contributions of the sea ice floes to the total primary production would be greater in the Arctic Ocean and their importance would be greater in the arctic marine ecosystems.  相似文献
