The presence of arsenic (As) in surface water constitutes an important environmental risk, where mobility and adsorption processes are responsible for its behavior in the sediment–water interface. Therefore, the assessment of adsorption, mobility and water availability of arsenic in freshwater sediments, with agricultural, livestock and urban soil uses was performed. Arsenic concentrations in sediments ranged from 5.4 to 15.9 mg kg?1 (total) and 2.8 to 6.5 mg kg?1 (labile), and those of iron and manganese were 11,563–23,500 and 140.6–662.1 mg kg?1, respectively. The As levels in water were significantly lower than those of sediments. Results would suggest that As co-precipitation and adsorption on Fe oxides are probably the major route of immobilization, determining its low lability. Manganese did not present an outstanding contribution to the retention, and cation-exchange capacity, pH and organic matter of sediments did not show an influence on the mobility of As. 相似文献

The quadrant technique, a conditional sampling approach that allocates Reynolds stresses into four different types of events
(ejections or bursts, sweeps, inward interactions and outward interactions), is applied to stable marine atmospheric boundary-layer
data, collected in the framework of the Coupled Boundary Layer Air—Sea Transfer, Low wind component experiment at Nantucket
Island, Massachusetts, USA. The general properties of both scalar and momentum transport are analyzed under the scope of quadrant
analysis experimentally and theoretically. It is shown that the third-order Gram–Charlier series is necessary and even sufficient
in most of the cases, in describing the experimental time and flux contributions of each quadrant to the total transfer, for
both scalar and momentum transport, while the ability of the Gaussian distribution is limited to outlining the general pattern
of these quantities. Moreover, a threshold value is applied to the conditional analysis, separating the most important events
from the less significant ones and the sensitivity of the flux and especially the time fraction of each quadrant on the choice
of this value is presented and discussed. Also, a set of numerically extracted equations, completing the analytical relations,
is derived, enabling the prediction of the time and flux fractions of each quadrant, for a wide range of correlation coefficient
and threshold values. Finally, the sensitivity of the analysis to the atmospheric stability and the Reynolds averaging scales
showed that correlated and uncorrelated motions tend to balance for increasingly stable conditions and/or for large time scales. 相似文献

Coastal geomorphology results from the combined effects of contemporary dynamics, sea‐level rise and the inherited geological framework, yet the relative importance of these driving mechanisms may change throughout the evolutionary history of coastal deposits. In this contribution, we analyse the depositional history of the Cíes Islands barrier‐lagoon system, based on lithofacies, radiocarbon ages, and pollen analysis. Our results reveal a sedimentary sequence that provides evidence for striking changes in the dynamical functioning of this complex since the mid‐Holocene. The sedimentary sequence commenced about 7700 cal years bp by fresh‐water ponding of an upland depression located about 4 m below present mean sea‐level. Fresh‐water ponds were infilled by aeolian sediments following a gradual lowering of the water‐table 4000 cal years bp . Post‐3600 cal years bp sea‐level rise allowed water oscillations to reach the elevation of the bedrock causing the inundation of fresh‐water ponds and subsequent lagoonal and marine sedimentation. Subsequently, landward and upward migration of a sand‐barrier led to overwash and deposition of sand in the newly formed lagoon. The resultant sedimentary sequence suggests that climatic conditions played an important role controlling the sedimentation regime during the entire history of the basin; changing water‐table levels during early stages of evolution and increasing storminess during more recent times. In addition, background sea‐level rise related to the Holocene transgression was a key factor in controlling the evolution of the system, yet its influence depended to an extent on the relative elevation of the bedrock topography. Rocketsonde — derived temperature trends within the Northern hemisphere are examined for the stratosphere and lower mesosphere for the period 1969–1978. The rocketsonde records presented here are homogeneous because of are mostly based on the Datasonde system. It appears that stratospheric and lower mesospheric temperature fluctuations in some cases, are about one order of magnitude larger than observed by previous workers. The main features for the temperature trends throughout the decade 1969–1978 are notably: (a) 15 C cooling at 60 km, (b) 5.5 C at 50 km, (c) 5 C at 40 km, (d) 4 C at 30 km, and (e) 3.5 C at 20 km. 相似文献

The problem of updating a structural model and its associated uncertainties by utilizing measured dynamic response data is addressed. A Bayesian probabilistic formulation is followed to obtain the posterior probability density function (PDF) of the uncertain model parameters for given measured data. The present paper discusses the issue of identifiability of the model parameters and reviews existing asymptotic approximations for identifiable cases. The focus of the paper is on the treatment of the general unidentifiable case where the earlier approximations are not applicable. In this case the posterior PDF of the parameters is found to be concentrated in the neighborhood of an extended and extremely complex manifold in the parameter space. The computational difficulties associated with calculating the posterior PDF in such cases are discussed and an algorithm for an efficient approximate representation of the above manifold and the posterior PDF is presented. Numerical examples involving noisy data are presented to demonstrate the concepts and the proposed method. 相似文献

Egg identification in plankton samples is usually needed for purposes of stock assessment. Until recently, only morphological characters were used for identifying the eggs of different fish species. Late developmental stages are easily distinguishable due to pigmentation as well as egg and oil globule size range. However, for early stages, these characteristics are difficult to be discriminated and may overlap with other species. European horse mackerel species (Trachurus trachurus, T. mediterraneus, T. picturatus) overlap significantly in their spawning areas in some European waters. Because of the fact that their eggs are morphologically similar, genetic methodologies are needed to identify eggs and larvae to species correctly. In the present study, formalin‐ and ethanol‐preserved eggs were tested to estimate the efficacy of genetic methodologies for species identification of eggs when different preservatives are used. A 370‐bp fragment of cytochrome b was successfully amplified followed by restriction fragment analysis with two restriction enzymes aiming to identify the eggs to species. Horse mackerel egg identification was accomplished with the maximum success in ethanol‐preserved eggs. However, it seems that various preservatives had different effects on the DNA quality of eggs as genetic identification was less successful in formalin‐preserved eggs. Preserving in ethanol a part of the eggs obtained in plankton surveys is suggested for purposes of accurate genetic identification, even if their morphological features are distorted in time. 相似文献

A general framework for multi-criteria optimal design is presented which is well suited for performance-based design of structural systems operating in an uncertain dynamic environment. A decision theoretic approach is used which is based on aggregation of preference functions for the multiple, possibly conflicting, design criteria. This allows the designer to trade off these criteria in a controlled manner during the optimization. Reliability-based design criteria are used to maintain user-specified levels of structural safety by properly taking into account the uncertainties in the modelling and seismic loads that a structure may experience during its lifetime. Code-based requirements are also easily incorporated into this optimal design process. The methodology is demonstrated with a simple example involving the design of a three-storey steel-frame building for which the ground motion uncertainty is characterized by a probabilistic response spectrum which is developed from available attenuation formulas and seismic hazard models.
