Creating Carbon Offsets in Agriculture through No-Till Cultivation: A Meta-Analysis of Costs and Carbon Benefits 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6

Carbon terrestrial sinks are often seen as a low-cost alternative to fuel switching and reduced fossil fuel use for lowering atmospheric CO2. To determine whether this is true for agriculture, one meta-regression analysis (52 studies, 536 observations) examines the costs of switching from conventional tillage to no-till, while another (51 studies, 374 observations) compares carbon accumulation under the two practices. Costs per ton of carbon uptake are determined by combining the two results. The viability of agricultural carbon sinks is found to vary by region and crop, with no-till representing a low-cost option in some regions (costs of less than $10 per tC), but a high-cost option in others (costs of 100–$400 per tC). A particularly important finding is that no-till cultivation may store no carbon at all if measurements are taken at sufficient depth. In some circumstances no-till cultivation may yield a triple dividend of carbon storage, increased returns and reduced soil erosion, but in many others creating carbon offset credits in agricultural soils is not cost effective because reduced tillage practices store little or no carbon. 相似文献

We demonstrate that even in the absence of flares there are very often volumes of hot plasma in the corona above active regions with temperatures in excess of 10 million degrees. Characteristics of this hot plasma and its time variations seem to be different in active regions of different phase of development. These hot plasma regions are sources of very weak, but clearly recognizable, X-ray emission above 3.5 keV. Long-lived X-ray brightenings, 104 times weaker than a flare, but lasting up to 10 hr occur predominantly along the H ∥ = 0 line, apparently low in the corona. After major flares, long-lived X-ray emission is also radiated from tops of arches extending high into the corona. Some other long-lived sources, far from the H∥ = 0 line, may be associated with newly emerging flux. Short-lived X-ray sources, with fluxes ranging from subflare levels to 10?3 times the flare flux, last for 2 to more than 30 min and are probably microflares. Climate change during the Last Glacial is considered as a major forcing factor of fluvial system changes. A continuous succession of fluvial sediments, reflecting adaptations to climate change from the Weichselian Middle Pleniglacial (oxygen isotope stage 3) onwards, occurs in lowland river basins in the Netherlands.A comparison of the Pleniglacial and Late Glacial fluvial record in the Netherlands shows that climatic oscillations of similar magnitude did not produce changes in the fluvial sedimentary system of equal magnitude. The Late Glacial fluvial system proves to be highly sensitive to climate change. By contrast, many of the rapid climate changes that have occurred during oxygen isotope stage 3, according to the Greenland ice core record, are not detectable in the fluvial sediments. This can be explained by differences in the impact of the climate variations on drainage basin vegetation. During the Late Glacial, the tree line repeatedly shifted through the Netherlands, whereas the area remained within the tundra zone during the Middle Pleniglacial. Precipitation variations and permafrost aggradation and degradation have played a secondary role.The Weichselian fluvial succession in the Netherlands demonstrates that detection of a change in the fluvial sedimentary system and relating this change to climate change is subject to methodological limitations. The climatic significance of changes in the fluvial record should be carefully evaluated, as well as their chronology. From a study of eight hard X-ray flares, all with durations of less than five minutes, it is found that these flares can be completely decomposed into short-lived bursts, called Elementary Flare Bursts (EFB). For each one flare the individual EFB's have approximatively the same Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM); average values range between 4 s (± 1 s) and 24 s (± 5 s) for the different flares. Yet there are significant differences between the FWHM's for the individual EFB's of a flare. The EFB's are slightly asymmetric; rise time is approx. 0.9 of the decay time. Locating additional long-term groundwater resources in semi-arid regions of developing countries with growing populations is an expensive undertaking. Simple geographic information system (GIS) techniques can be utilised to facilitate efficient application of expensive geophysical techniques and test-drilling by functioning as an interdisciplinary integration and decision-making tool, especially in data-poor and poorly mapped environments where more sophisticated GIS techniques are not applicable. Analyses of long-term field observations (1974–2007) on chlorophyll-a concentrations in the western Wadden Sea showed no long-term trends in the timing of the wax and wane of phytoplankton spring
blooms. There is weak evidence, however, that the height of the autumn bloom has decreased since the early 1990s. This fading
of the autumn bloom may have had consequences for the carbon transfer to higher trophic levels, currently hampering primary
consumer species that mostly rely on food supply during late summer. Current and other findings suggest a shortening of the
growing season due to the fading of the autumn bloom in the Wadden Sea and a lengthening of the growing season due to an advancement
of the spring bloom in the North Sea. These regionally different changes in seasonality may have contributed to the coinciding
decrease in bivalve filtering capacity in the western Wadden Sea and the large-scale offshore shift of juvenile plaice from
