Fresh submarine basalt glasses from Galapagos Ridge, FAMOUS area, Cayman Trough and Kilauea east rift contain 22 to 160 ppm carbon and 0.3 to 2.8 ppm nitrogen, respectively, as the sums of dissolved species and vesicle-filling gases (CO2 and N2). The large range of variation in carbon content is due to combined effect of depth-dependency of the solubility of carbon in basalt melt and varying extents of vapour loss during magma emplacement as well as in sample crushing. The isotopic ratios of indigenous carbon and nitrogen are in very narrow ranges,?6.2 ± 0.2% relative to PDB and +0.2 ± 0.6 %. relative to atmospheric nitrogen, respectively. In basalt samples from Juan de Fuca Ridge, however, isotopically light carbon (δ13C = around ?24%.) predominates over the indigenous carbon; no indigenous heavy carbon was found. Except for Galapagos Ridge samples, these ocean-floor basalts contain 670 to 1100 ppm sulfur, averaging 810 ppm, in the form of both sulfide and sulfate, whereas basalts from Galapagos Ridge are higher in both sulfur (1490 and 1570 ppm) and iron (11.08% total iron as FeO). The δ34S values average +0.3 ± 0.5%. with average fractionation factor between sulfate and sulfide of +7.4 ± 1.6%.. The sulfate/sulfide ratios tend to increase with increasing water content of basalt, probably because the oxygen fugacity increases with increasing water content in basalt melt.  相似文献

Summary This investigation focuses on North Atlantic subtropical cyclones which tracked within 100 nautical miles (185 km) of Bermuda from 1957 to 2005, identified through subtropical structural characteristics distinguished using Cyclone Phase Space, from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts 45-year reanalyses. The study assesses the characteristics of these hybrid storms that affect the Island, in order to aid the local forecaster. Reanalysis charts, surface analyses, local observations, HURDAT tracks, and satellite pictures, where available, were examined. This data shows that subtropical cyclones affecting Bermuda usually form in close proximity, to the south-southwest, over water of an average of 26 °C, under moderate vertical wind shear, with an upper trough lying to the west-north-west. They then move in a north-northeastward direction, intensifying quickly, but not often reaching a peak intensity of more than 26 m s−1. They generally have their beginnings along old baroclinic zones. September is the peak month of occurrence. A direct hit by a severe subtropical cyclone, producing locally observed winds of over 26 m s−1, appears to be a rare event. However, these storms are certainly a threat to the Island, particularly due to their lack of predictability, and conditions conducive to an incipient subtropical cyclone with potential to affect the Island should always be closely monitored.  相似文献

Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is effective for removing volatile organic compound (VOC) mass from the vadose zone and reducing the potential for vapor intrusion (VI) into overlying and surrounding buildings. However, the relationship between residual mass in the subsurface and VI is complex. Through a series of alternating extraction (SVE on) and rebound (SVE off) periods, this field study explored the relationship and aspects of SVE applicable to VI mitigation in a commercial/light-industrial setting. The primary objective was to determine if SVE could provide VI mitigation over a wide area encompassing multiple buildings, city streets, and subsurface utilities and eliminate the need for individual subslab depressurization systems. We determined that SVE effectively mitigates offsite VI by intercepting or diluting contaminant vapors that would otherwise enter buildings through foundation slabs. Data indicate a measurable (5 Pa) influence of SVE on subslab/indoor pressure differential may occur but is not essential for effective VI mitigation. Indoor air quality improvements were evident in buildings 100 to 200 feet away from SVE including those without a measurable reversal of differential pressure across the slab or substantial reductions in subslab VOC concentration. These cases also demonstrated mitigation effects across a four-lane avenue with subsurface utilities. These findings suggest that SVE affects distant VI entry points with little observable impact on differential pressures and without relying on subslab VOC concentration reductions.  相似文献

Ecological risk evaluations are commonly performed using aqueous concentrations and aqueous toxicity measurements as a starting point. However risk evaluations could be carried out using internal biotic concentrations and the internal lethal or sublethal concentrations. This has several advantages. Firstly, the internal lethal and sublethal concentrations are relatively consistent in groups of chemicals having a similar mode of action. Thus in field situations the internal concentration, in fish and possibly other biota, can be used to evaluate possible biotic effects. Also other histopathological, biochemical, biomolecular and physiological effects can be assessed and used with this information to give an overall assessment. There are, however, several limitations with this approach including sensitivity, health, age and nutritional status of the biota as well as a lack of data on dose/response relationships with internal concentrations.  相似文献

In this century, sport has steadily become a more visible and marketable part of everyday life and of global political significance. States have consequently used sport as a means of soft power in order to develop a positive international presence and, usually to a lesser extent, affirm national identity. Sport diplomacy is usually associated with mega‐events and large states, but Fiji has used its prowess in rugby, and its Sevens victory in the 2016 Olympic Games, to promote itself globally, strengthen its national image and support government claims to legitimacy. The government emphasised Fijian values to construct a banal nationalism, in the face of ethnic divisions, and external concerns over repression of civil society. At least ephemerally, Fiji acquired new international recognition, and the government gained national legitimacy, indicating the expanding role of sport in geopolitics.  相似文献

Though islands have some comparative advantages for tourism, developing a tourist industry has often been hampered by isolation, poor connections and limited marketing. Despite a series of plans and promotions, tourism in the small Polynesian island of Niue has never reached its frequently anticipated potential because of poor airline connectivity and capacity and limited local attractions. Nevertheless the permanently ‘infant industry’ plays a key role in contributing to the fiction of developing a private sector to escape from aid dependence and hint at a sustainable future. Tourism has, however, remained significantly, even increasingly, influenced by the public sector, as Niue increasingly becomes a ‘government island’.  相似文献

The sensitivity of coal permeability to the effective stress means that changes in stress as well as pore pressure within a coal seam lead to changes in permeability. In addition coal swells with gas adsorption and shrinks with desorption; these sorption strains impact on the coal stress state and thus the permeability. Therefore the consideration of gas migration in coal requires an appreciation of the coupled geomechanical behaviour. A number of approaches to representing coal permeability incorporate the geomechanical response and have found widespread use in reservoir simulation. However these approaches are based on two simplifying assumptions; uniaxial strain (i.e. zero strain in the horizontal plane) and constant vertical stress. This paper investigates the accuracy of these assumptions for reservoir simulation of enhanced coalbed methane through CO2 sequestration. A coupled simulation approach is used where the coalbed methane simulator SIMED II is coupled with the geomechanical model FLAC3D. This model is applied to three simulation case studies assembled from information presented in the literature. Two of these are for 100% CO2 injection, while the final example is where a flue gas (12.5% CO2 and 87.5% N2) is injected. It was found that the horizontal contrast in sorption strain within the coal seam caused by spatial differences in the total gas content leads to vertical stress variation. Thus the permeability calculated from the coupled simulation and that using an existing coal permeability model, the Shi–Durucan model, are significantly different; for the region in the vicinity of the production well the coupled permeability is greater than the Shi–Durucan model. In the vicinity of the injection well the permeability is less than that calculated using the Shi–Durucan model. This response is a function of the magnitude of the strain contrast within the seam and dissipates as these contrasts diminish.  相似文献

Modeling the distribution and habitat capacities of key estuarine species can be used to identify hot spots, areas where species density is significantly higher than surrounding areas. This approach would be useful for establishing a baseline for evaluating future environmental scenarios across a landscape. We developed species distribution models for early juvenile life stages of brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus), white shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus), blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), and spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) in order to delineate the current coastal hot spots that provide the highest quality habitat conditions for these estuarine-dependent species in Louisiana. Response curves were developed from existing long-term fisheries-independent monitoring data to identify habitat suitability for fragmented marsh landscapes. Response curves were then integrated with spatially explicit input data to generate species distribution models for the coastal region of Louisiana. Using spatial autocorrelation metrics, we detected clusters of suitable habitat across the Louisiana coast, but only 1% of the areas were identified as true hot spots with the highest habitat quality for nekton. The regions identified as hot spots were productive fringing marsh habitats that are considered the most vulnerable to natural and anthropogenic impacts. The species distribution models identify the coastal habitats which currently provide the greatest capacity for key estuarine species and will be used in the Louisiana coastal planning process to evaluate how species distributions may change under various environmental and restoration scenarios.  相似文献
