A considerable proportion of the world population lives and works on or near coasts. Therefore, knowledge of the physical
processes which affect the coast is very important. These include the tides of the sea and the oceanic and meteorological
circulation patterns that cause variations of the sea level and generate waves. The sea level is measured by tide-gauges,
while the height of waves may be determined by a variety of special devices. Radar systems have been applied for the sea level
and wave measurements since the late 1990s. This paper presents results from a field test or such a radar application and
aims to give the reader help and support in the selection of an appropriate radar-gauge system to measure sea level and sea

Holocene and late Pleistocene alluvial sequences of the mid-Medjerda floodplain (Northern Tunisia) reveal three types of soils with gradual transitions: Fluvisols (Calcaric), Cambisols (Calcaric) and Calcic Luvisols (Chromic). Stratigraphic cross-correlations, palaeomagnetic secular variation, and 14C and IRSL dating enable detailed information about ages and durations of soil formation in the floodplain.Weakly developed Fluvisols (Calcaric) commonly reveal late Holocene ages with soil formation durations lasting between 100 and 300 years. Hence, Holocene soil formation is detectable in the exposures from durations of around 100 years onwards. Cambisols show predominantly mid-Holocene ages. The durations of soil formation are between 800 and 5000 years. Calcic Luvisols (Chromic) feature late Pleistocene ages, with durations of soil formation between 10,000 and 40,000 years.Profile Development Indices were computed from simple field parameters like soil structure, soil colour, horizon thickness and leaching features. The derived development indices show good correlation (R2 = 0.804) with the calculated durations of soil formation. Field parameters are well suited for a quantitative development index of Holocene soil formation, even if very weak developed soils are predominant. The study shows that maturity stages of Holocene alluvial soils in a homogeneous Mediterranean environment are predominantly driven by soil formation duration. 相似文献

In this article the relative roles of precipitation and soil moisture in influencing runoff variability in the Mekong River basin are addressed. The factors controlling runoff generation are analysed in a calibrated macro‐scale hydrologic model, and it is demonstrated that, in addition to rainfall, simulated soil moisture plays a decisive role in establishing the timing and amount of generated runoff. Soil moisture is a variable with a long memory for antecedent hydrologic fluxes that is influenced by soil hydrologic parameters, topography, and land cover type. The influence of land cover on soil moisture implies significant hydrologic consequences for large‐scale deforestation and expansion of agricultural land. A study on flood water infiltration and ground water recharge of a shallow alluvial aquifer was conducted in the hyperarid section of the Kuiseb River, Namibia. The study site was selected to represent a typical desert ephemeral river. An instrumental setup allowed, for the first time, continuous monitoring of infiltration during a flood event through the channel bed and the entire vadose zone. The monitoring system included flexible time domain reflectometry probes that were designed to measure the temporal variation in vadose zone water content and instruments to concurrently measure the levels of flood and ground water. A sequence of five individual floods was monitored during the rainy season in early summer 2006. These newly generated data served to elucidate the dynamics of flood water infiltration. Each flood initiated an infiltration event which was expressed in wetting of the vadose zone followed by a measurable rise in the water table. The data enabled a direct calculation of the infiltration fluxes by various independent methods. The floods varied in their stages, peaks, and initial water contents. However, all floods produced very similar flux rates, suggesting that the recharge rates are less affected by the flood stages but rather controlled by flow duration and available aquifer storage under it. Large floods flood the stream channel terraces and promote the larger transmission losses. These, however, make only a negligible contribution to the recharge of the ground water. Polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) were observed with the multi-wavelength lidar of the MOANA project (Modelling and Observations of Aerosols in the Northern Atmosphere) during SESAME (Second European Stratospheric Arctic and Mid-latitude Experiment). The physical state, liquid or solid, of the cloud particles can be inferred from the lidar data. Using isentropic back-trajectories to obtain the thermal history of the sampled air masses, it is possible to reconcile most of the observations with current ideas on PSC formation and evolution. When the cloud particles were identified as liquid, changes in the size distribution of the droplets along the trajectory were calculated using a micro-physical box model. Backscatter ratios calculated from the size distributions are in broad agreement with the lidar data, giving confidence in current understanding of the evolution of ternary solution (H2SO4, HNO3 and H2O) droplets.Results from two soundings are shown which bear on the problem of the formation of solid particles. In the first, solid particles were detected. The air mass had cooled to the frost point 12 hours earlier. In the second no solid particles were detected although the air temperature was below the nitric acid trihydrate existence point, and had decreased by 12K in the previous 14 hours. 相似文献

In order to examine the Corg flow in rapid sand filter columns for the elimination of iron and manganese, reduced groundwater was treated in a pilot plant consisting of a trickling filter column (TF I) followed by a wet type filter column (WF II) and a separate wet type filter column (WF sep). Additionally the effect of filtration on BOM was studied by measuring AOC and BDOC. The biological processes in TF I and WF sep led to an elimination of iron, ammonia, and manganese. Moreover, the filtration decreased the NOM content. 21% and 23% of the TOC were eliminated in TF I and in WF sep, respectively. WF II caused no significant Corg reduction. The calculation of the Corg flow in the filter columns showed that bacteria took part in the TOC elimination. From the TOC removed, about 24% was eliminated by metabolic activities of the bacterial population whereas 86% was adsorbed onto iron sludge. Similar results were obtained for the TF I column and for the WF sep column as well. The calculated Corg flow was confirmed by the BDOC measurements. The filtration process led to a BDOC decrease. TF I and WF sep reduced appoximately 35% of the biodegradable organic carbon. In contrast there was no significant elimination by WF II. The AOC results suggest that an AOC production and an AOC elimination process exist in rapid sand filters for groundwater treatment. In the trickling filter column significant AOC production was found, whereas in the wet type filter columns AOC elimination was predominating. 相似文献

In this paper, we consider the elliptic collinear solutions of the classical n-body problem, where the n bodies always stay on a straight line, and each of them moves on its own elliptic orbit with the same eccentricity. Such a motion is called an elliptic Euler–Moulton collinear solution. Here we prove that the corresponding linearized Hamiltonian system at such an elliptic Euler–Moulton collinear solution of n-bodies splits into \((n-1)\) independent linear Hamiltonian systems, the first one is the linearized Hamiltonian system of the Kepler 2-body problem at Kepler elliptic orbit, and each of the other \((n-2)\) systems is the essential part of the linearized Hamiltonian system at an elliptic Euler collinear solution of a 3-body problem whose mass parameter is modified. Then the linear stability of such a solution in the n-body problem is reduced to those of the corresponding elliptic Euler collinear solutions of the 3-body problems, which for example then can be further understood using numerical results of Martínez et al. on 3-body Euler solutions in 2004–2006. As an example, we carry out the detailed derivation of the linear stability for an elliptic Euler–Moulton solution of the 4-body problem with two small masses in the middle. 相似文献

A study of the 933±32-Ma-old Bolangir massif-type anorthosite complex (Eastern Ghats Province, India) yielded strong evidence for anorthosite emplacement during regional shortening, and thereby new insights in massif-type anorthosite formation. Several lines of evidence strongly suggest synchronism of plutonism and regional deformation. First, structures in the country rocks, which imply N–S-directed shortening accompanied by E–W extension, are mirrored by a E–W trending post-magmatic foliation and N–S trending shear zones in the anorthosite complex. Near the intrusion, the foliation in the country rocks becomes parallel to the contact and an internal marginal foliation, and foliation triple points occur in the country rocks. Second, synshortening dikes inside and outside the anorthosite complex are filled with pluton-related melts. Third, ferrodiorites, which are considered late-stage differentiates of the anorthositic pluton, concentrate in tectonic voids at the pluton margin. Some of these occurrences have been affected by the last increments of the regional deformation, but others transect the same structures. Ascent mechanism and significance of the adjacent terrane boundary of the Eastern Ghats Belt for ascent and emplacement of the Bolangir anorthosite complex are discussed. The results of this study imply that emplacement of Proterozoic massif-type anorthosite is not restricted to extensional settings. 相似文献
