A fog detection algorithm that uses geostationary satellite data has been developed and tested. This algorithm focuses on continuous fog detection since temporal discontinuities, especially at dawn and dusk, are a major problem with current fog detection algorithms that use satellite imagery data. This is because the spectral radiance at 3.7 μm contains overlapping emissive and reflectance components. In order to determine the radiance at 3.7 μm under fog conditions, radiative transfer model simulations were performed. The results showed that the radiance at 3.7 μm obviously varies with the solar zenith angle, and the brightness temperature differences between 3.7 μm and 10.8 μm are completely dissimilar between day and night (positive and varying with the angle during the daytime, but negative and constant at night). In this algorithm, a dynamic threshold is used as a function of the solar zenith angle. Moreover, additional criteria such as infrared, split-window channels, and a water vapor channel are used to remove high-level clouds. Also, the visible reflectance (0.67 μm) channel is used in the daytime algorithm because visible channel images are very practical for confirming a fog area with the high reflectivity and the smooth texture. The clear-sky visible reflectance for the previous 15 days was also employed to eliminate the surface effect that appeared during dawn and dusk. As the results, fog areas were estimated continuously, allowing the lifecycle of the fog system, from its development to decline, to appear obviously in the resulting images. Moreover, the estimated fog areas matched well with surface observations, except in a high latitude region that was covered by thin cirrus clouds.  相似文献

Thousands of buildings were damaged by the devastating Chi‐Chi earthquake on September 21, 1999. Of all the public buildings, school buildings are the most vulnerable to earthquake damage, and the retrofitting of existing school buildings becomes a stringent issue. In addition to cost effectiveness, the impact of retrofitting methods on the functions of the school buildings needs to be considered. This paper therefore proposes the retrofitting of school buildings by adding sandwich columns onto partition brick walls. The sandwich column is divided into two parts and is added to the two sides of the partition brick wall held with pairs of U‐shaped bars. The retrofit does not require the removal of windows or doors in the longitudinal direction making the proposed method cost effective and minimizes the impact on the function of the school buildings. Five full‐scale specimens without and with retrofitting were designed and fabricated for testing based on the partition brick wall frames of the existing school buildings. The specimens were subjected to cyclic loading in the out‐of‐plane direction through a loading frame so that the columns deformed with double curvatures. The experimental results verified the feasibility of the proposed retrofit method. The data showed that the lateral strength of the retrofitted specimen doubled that which was not and that the residual strength of the retrofitted specimen was just as high as the ultimate strength of the specimen without retrofitting. The PoSen complex, located closely adjacent to the southwestern margin of the Red River shear zone represents the uplifted basement of north Vietnam and may record the motion of the shear zone. However, its thermochronological history has not been fully examined yet. Here we applied U–Pb and 40Ar/39Ar dating methods to reveal its thermochronological history. U–Pb analysis of composite zircon grains by TIMS yielded an average age of 760 ± 25 Ma, clustering on the concordia line. Twelve SHRIMP U–Pb analyses also yielded a consistent result of 751 ± 7 Ma. Along with the geochemical features, the U–Pb dating results suggest the PoSen complex was a late Proterozoic magmatic complex, which could correspond to the Chengjiang orogeny, a widespread thermal event in southwest China. Results of 40Ar/39Ar dating of micas and K-feldspars were in the range of 36–30 Ma, revealing a rapid cooling and exhumation history of the PoSen complex during the late Paleogene. The time span of cooling and exhumation of the PoSen complex is slightly older than the main cooling phases of the Ailao Shan–Red River (ASRR) metamorphic massifs (28–17 Ma), but is synchronous with the early igneous activity stage in the eastern Indo-Asian collision zone of southeast China and north Vietnam. Owing to the ongoing debate about the initiation and offset of the ASRR shear zone, the tectonic force for the late Paleogene cooling of the PoSen complex is still inconclusive. The rapid exhumation of the PoSen complex could be in response to either the detachment of the Neo-Tethyan slab or a transpressional phase of continental subduction along the ASRR shear system in the eastern Indo-Asian collision zone.  相似文献

The complete thermodynamically consistent turbulent closure models of isochoric and isothermal dry granular dense flows with incompressible grains and weak turbulent intensity are established on the basis of a linearized theory with respect to the granular coldness for the dynamic responses of the closure conditions. The models are applied to study a gravity-driven stationary turbulent flow down an inclined moving plane, and the numerical simulations are compared with the experimental outcomes. It shows that while the mean velocity decreases monotonically from its boundary value on the moving plane toward the free surface, the mean porosity and granular coldness display more “exponential-like” increasing/decreasing tendencies. Of particular interest is that the granular coldness evolves from its maximum value on the moving plane toward its minimum value on the free surface, leading to the turbulent dissipation evolving in a similar manner, while the turbulent kinetic energy demonstrate a reverse tendency. The obtained results show good agreements to the experimental outcomes and are similar to the characteristics of conventional Newtonian fluids in turbulent shear flows.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to obtain nationwide basic data on the distribution of environmental radiation in normal times and to compare the characteristics and distribution in many areas. The data obtained can contribute to improve the radioactivity analysis technology, public health, and the environment in the future. Ten elementary schools in the Gwangju area were selected and soil samples were taken from the playgrounds of the selected schools for analysis. A high-purity Ge (HPGe) semiconductor detector, a multi-channel analyzer (MCA), and a FH40G dose rate detector were used to measure the radioactivity concentration of K-40 and Cs-137, and the ambient gamma dose rate. According to the measured radioactivity concentrations of 40K and 137Cs, the K-40 concentration (Bq/kg dry) was measured at 723.61 ± 162.72, which was higher than the minimum detection limit (MDL). The Cs-137 concentration (Bq/kg dry) measured was 0.203 ± 0.023, which was lower than the MDL. FH40G was used to measure the ambient gamma dose rate (nSv/h) in different areas. According to the measurement results, the ambient gamma dose rate was 176.73 ± 4.91. With regard to the correlation between the ambient gamma dose rate and radioactivity concentrations of 40K and 137Cs, 40K showed a correlation coefficient with Cs-137 and the ambient gamma dose rate of ?0.36 and 0.124, respectively. 137Cs revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.293 with an ambient gamma dose rate of ?0.210. In conclusion, the low correlation coefficient (<0.5) indicates no significant correlation between the ambient dose rate measurements of K-40 and 137Cs.  相似文献

Understanding the extent to which discrete element method (DEM) simulations can capture the critical state characteristics of granular materials is important to legitimize the use of DEM in geomechanics. This paper documents a DEM study that considered the sensitivity of the critical state response characteristics to the coefficient of interparticle friction (μ) using samples with gradings that are representative of a real soil. Most of the features that are typically associated with sand behaviour at the critical state were seen to emerge from the DEM simulation data. An important deviation occurs when high μ values (μ ≥ 0.5) are used, as has been the case in a number of prior DEM studies. While there is a systematic variation in the critical state behaviour with μ for μ < 0.5, when μ ≥ 0.5, the behaviour at the critical state seems to be insensitive to further increases in μ. In contrast to observations of conventional soil response, when μ ≥ 0.5, the void ratio at the critical state initially increases with increasing mean effective stress (p′). Analysis of the DEM data and use of simple models of isolated force chains enabled some key observations. When ‘floating’ particles that do not transmit stress are eliminated from the void ratio calculation, the void ratio at the critical state decreases consistently with increasing p′. There is a transition from sliding to rolling behaviour at the contact points as μ increases. Beyond a limiting value of μ, further increases in μ do not increase the buckling resistance of individual strong force chains. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper investigates the relationship between the stress ratio and the fabric of frictional material under three-dimensional stress. The spatial distribution function of the contact normal was derived to describe the heterogeneous distribution of the micro-structural architecture. Discrete element simulations were conducted using an assembly consisting of 10,000 spherical particles. Sixteen stress probe experiments were simulated under both axi-symmetric stress and plane-strain conditions. The numerical results show that a change in the direction of the stress probe does not significantly affect the evolution of the fabric structure in the vertical plane. Regardless of whether the material is subjected to axi-symmetric stress or plane strain, the degree of fabric anisotropy shows a unique relationship with the stress ratio. The modified stress ratio, as theoretically derived from a micromechanics formulation, is able to separately measure micro-structures in the vertical and horizontal planes. The distribution function proposed in this study generally performs well in estimating the heterogeneous distribution of the contact normal. A higher-order distribution function is required to improve the predictability of the contact normal distribution for increasing stress-ratio paths.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Despite a number of geotechnical investigations that have been carried out in the Busan new port area of South Korea, the local practicing engineers have been unable to deduce successfully the geotechnical properties of the clays due to their spatial variation. In the area, clay deposits, so-called Pusan clays, are unusually thick, varying from 20 m to 70 m in thickness. For this study, comprehensive geological and geotechnical investigations were carried out with sophisticated sampling techniques, in situ and laboratory tests as well as geological analyses at an additional three locations. As a result of the investigations, it was found that depositional environments are closely related to the relative changes in sea level and have different features depending on location and depth. The clays consist of soft and stiff clays in the upper and the lower layers, respectively, which are classified as normally consolidated and cemented clay. Moreover, most of the geotechnical properties undergo small changes due to their depositional environment. Information about these effects would be quite helpful to understand the spatial variation of geotechnical properties as well as the effect of sample disturbance. Some correlations which reflect the geological history of the deposts were conducted for physical indexes and mechanical properties.  相似文献

Large scale reclamation works in coastal areas of the Nakdong River plain are at various stages of progress, since early 1990's on in-situ soft marine clay deposits. These deposits are of the order of 30 to 40 m thick. A realistic rapid characterization of soft ground would ensure success of any reclamation work in this area. In order to cope with the work carried out with different agencies, it is desirable to evolve a systematic methodology. In this study, engineering properties of clays at three coastal areas, Gadukdo, Noksan and Shinho, have been generated. The analysis of data has been done within the framework of classical developments in soil mechanics. Analysis has also been made by making use of the recent developments in dealing with soft clays. The dominant factors, namely, stress, time, and environment influencing the response of clay to loading are identified.  相似文献
