The aim of this study is to apply an integrated approach to determine nitrate sources and fate in the alluvial aquifer of the River Vibrata (Abruzzi, central Italy) by coupling the Isotope and the Component approaches. Collected data include concentration and nitrogen isotope composition of groundwater samples from the alluvial aquifer and nitrogen loads arising from agricultural and non-agricultural sources. The adopted methodology identified synthetic fertilizers as main sources of nitrate in the Vibrata alluvial aquifer. At the catchment scale, two different zones have been identified: the Upper Valley, where infiltration to groundwater is dominant and nitrogen easily migrates into the aquifer; in this area, nitrate content in groundwater is stable and normally higher than EU requirements. Moreover, streamwaters are fed by groundwater with a nitrate content likely lowered by denitrification processes occurring in the hyporheic zone. In the Lower Valley, runoff processes dominate and the nitrate content in surface waters is higher. Nevertheless, groundwater is locally affected by denitrification that breaks down the nitrate content, which often reaches values consistent with law limits. 相似文献

The control exerted by the hydrostratigraphic structure on aquifer recharge, groundwater flow and discharge along the coastal areas of a Mediterranean basin (Salento peninsula, about 5,000?km2 wide, southern Italy) is assessed through the development and application of a groundwater flow model based on the reconstruction of the hydrostratigraphic architecture at the regional scale. The hydrostratigraphic model, obtained by processing surface and subsurface data, is applied to map the top of the main aquifer, which is hosted in the deep hydrostratigraphic unit corresponding to Cretaceous and Oligocene limestones with complex geometrical relationships with the sea. It is also used to estimate the aquifer recharge, which occurs by percolation through overlying younger sediments with low permeability. These data are completed with information about the soil use to estimate water abstraction for irrigation and with literature data to estimate the water abstraction for drinking and industrial purposes. The above-sketched conceptual model is the basis for a finite difference groundwater 2D pseudo-stationary flow model, which assumes the following fundamental approximations: the fractured and karst limestone hydrostratigraphic unit can be approximated, at the model scale, as a continuous medium for which the discrete Darcy??s law is valid; the transition zone between salt and fresh water is so small with respect to the grid spacing that the Ghyben?CHerzberg??s approximation for a sharp interface can be applied. Along the coastline different boundary conditions are assigned if the top of the limestone hydrostratigraphic unit lies either above the sea level (the aquifer has a free surface and fresh water is drained), or below the sea level (the aquifer is under pressure and the contact with sea occurs off-shore). Landslide detection and mapping represent fundamental requirements for every hazard and risk evaluation and consequent improvement of the management strategies for such natural hazards. Optical and radar remote sensing can be used to observe landslide-induced ground deformation, ranging from regional to local scales. This work presents a methodology called Landslide HotSpot Mapping; this approach integrates cartographic, thematic and optical data with Persistent Scatterer Interferometry for the identification of extremely slow to very slow moving landslides, and for the evaluation of their state of activity and intensity. This methodology scans wide areas to detect hotspots, which are narrow unstable zones characterized by higher landslide hazard. To these hotspots, priority has to be given when planning field surveys and in situ validation campaigns, so that field work time and effort can be optimized and significantly reduced. The approach is tested in Central Calabria, over a 4,470?km2 area located in southern Italy. ENVISAT ascending images acquired between 2003 and 2009 and processed with the Persistent Scatterer Pairs (PSP) technique are used to analyse deformation patterns. Combining conventional photo-interpretation with the analysis of PSP data, 64 new landslides are identified and the spatial (boundaries) and temporal (activity) information of 980 pre-mapped phenomena (23.6% of updated inventory) are updated. 1,012 active (continuous or reactivated) landslides are identified and 4 hotspot areas selected: San Fili, Rende, Lago, Catanzaro. Urgent field checks have to be organized for these hotspots to validate the satellite-based observations and to design appropriate mitigation measures to reduce impacts on the elements at risk. 相似文献

Intense blooms of the benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata have occurred in the northern Adriatic Sea since 2006. These blooms are associated with noxious effects on human health and with the mortality of benthic organisms because of the production of palytoxin-like compounds. The O. cf. ovata bloom and its relationships with nutrient concentrations at two stations on the Conero Riviera (northern Adriatic Sea) were investigated in the summer of 2009. O. cf. ovata developed from August to November, with the highest abundances in September (1.3 × 106 cells g−1 fw corresponding to 63.8 × 103 cells cm−2). The presence of the single O. cf. ovata genotype was confirmed by a PCR assay. Bloom developed when the seawater temperature was decreasing. Nutrient concentrations did not seem to affect bloom dynamics. Toxin analysis performed by high resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed a high total toxin content (up to 75 pg cell−1), including putative palytoxin and all the ovatoxins known so far. 相似文献

Estimates of pyroclastic flow emplacement temperatures in the Cerro Galán ignimbrite and Toconquis Group ignimbrites were
determined using thermal remanent magnetization of lithic clasts embedded within the deposits. These ignimbrites belong to
the Cerro Galán volcanic system, one of the largest calderas in the world, in the Puna plateau, NW Argentina. Temperature
estimates for the 2.08-Ma Cerro Galán ignimbrite are retrieved from 40 sites in 14 localities (176 measured clasts), distributed
at different distances from the caldera and different stratigraphic heights. Additionally, temperature estimates were obtained
from 27 sample sites (125 measured clasts) from seven ignimbrite units forming the older Toconquis Group (5.60–4.51 Ma), mainly
outcropping along a type section at Rio Las Pitas, Vega Real Grande. The paleomagnetic data obtained by progressive thermal
demagnetization show that the clasts of the Cerro Galán ignimbrite have one single magnetic component, oriented close to the
expected geomagnetic field at the time of emplacement. Results show therefore that most of the clasts acquired a new magnetization
oriented parallel to the magnetic field at the moment of the ignimbrite deposition, suggesting that the clasts were heated
up to or above the highest blocking temperature (T
b) of the magnetic minerals (T
b = 580°C for magnetite; T
b = 600–630°C for hematite). We obtained similar emplacement temperature estimations for six out of the seven volcanic units
belonging to the Toconquis Group, with the exception of one unit (Lower Merihuaca), where we found two distinct magnetic components.
The estimation of emplacement temperatures in this latter case is constrained at 580–610°C, which are lower than the other
ignimbrites. These estimations are also in agreement with the lowest pre-eruptive magma temperatures calculated for the same
unit (i.e., 790°C; hornblende–plagioclase thermometer; Folkes et al. 2011b). We conclude that the Cerro Galán ignimbrite and Toconquis Group ignimbrites were emplaced at temperatures equal to or higher
than 620°C, except for Lower Merihuaca unit emplaced at lower temperatures. The homogeneity of high temperatures from proximal
to distal facies in the Cerro Galán ignimbrite provides constraints for the emplacement model, marked by a relatively low
eruption column, low levels of turbulence, air entrainment, surface–water interaction, and a high level of topographic confinement,

The paper focuses on the strong motion array deployed in the upper Aterno River Valley, in the immediate outskirts north-west
of the town of L’Aquila, which is part of the Italian Strong Motion Network operated by the Department of Civil Protection.
The array is composed of six accelerometric stations located along a cross section of the valley. The importance of this array
relies on the fact that a large amount of high-quality records were obtained during the 2009 L’Aquila seismic sequence, from
both the mainshock and several aftershocks. These data are especially important to investigate site effects in sediment-filled
valleys during moderate earthquakes in epicentral area because well-documented observational studies are very limited in the
literature. However, the main drawback for the study of site effects in the Aterno valley is the lack of a detailed knowledge
of the geometry of the valley, soil layering and dynamic properties of materials. The main motivation for this study stems
from the need to provide a reliable subsoil model of the valley coupled with high-quality strong motion data. Based on the
above, in the framework of S4 project, a major effort was undertaken to get a trustworthy cross section of the valley by an
ad hoc investigation, comprising geological and geotechnical surveys as well as an extensive geophysical campaign, characterized
by both active and passive measurements. These results were complemented by additional geological and geotechnical data available
in the literature. By merging all the information acquired, a 2D subsoil model of the transversal section of the upper Aterno
valley has been produced. The valley is characterised by an asymmetric shape with a shallower rock basement at the western
edge of the valley that deepens at the valley centre. Moreover, based on the results of geophysical tests, representative
Vs values were assigned to the different lithologic units forming the alluvial deposits filling the valley. Shear wave velocity
is a fundamental parameter for ground response studies and it is also effective in classifying the accelerometric station
from a seismic point of view. The 2D model may be therefore, considered a benchmark model for future studies of site effects.
It will offer the possibility to examine site effects with a complex underlying geology and to validate the results of numerical
simulations of site response analyses with the numerous observations from earthquake recordings, both for weak and strong

Earthquake-induced landslides are responsible worldwide for significant socioeconomic losses and historically have a prominent
position in the list of natural hazards affecting the Iran plateau. As a step toward the development of tools for the assessment
and the management of this kind of hazard at regional scale, an empirical estimator of coseismic displacements along potential
sliding surfaces was obtained through a regression analysis for the Zagros region, a mountainous Iranian region subjected
to earthquake-induced landslides. This estimator, based on the Newmark’s model, allows to evaluate the expected permanent
displacement (named “Newmark displacement”) induced by seismic shaking of defined energy on potential sliding surface characterized
by a given critical acceleration. To produce regression models for Newmark
displacement estimators, a data set was constructed for different critical
acceleration values on the basis of 108 accelerometric recordings from 80 Iranian earthquakes with moment magnitudes between 3.6 and 7.
The empirical estimator has a general form, proposed by Jibson (Eng Geol 91:209–218, 2007), relating Newmark
displacement to Arias
intensity (as parameter representing the energy of the seismic forces) and to critical
acceleration (as parameter representing the dynamic shear resistance of the sliding mass). As an example of application, this relation
was employed to provide a basic document for earthquake-induced landslide hazard assessment at regional scale, according to
a method proposed by Del Gaudio et al. (Bull Seismol Soc Am 93:557–569, 2003), applied to the whole Iranian territory, including Zagros region. This method consists in evaluating the shear resistance
required to slopes to limit the occurrence of seismically induced failures, on the basis of the Newmark’s model. The obtained
results show that the exposure to landslide seismic induction is maximum in the Alborz Mountains region, where critical
accelerations up to ~0.1 g are required to limit the probability of seismic triggering of coherent type landslides within 10% in 50 years. 相似文献

A natural Ca-poor pigeonite (Wo6En76Fs18) from the ureilite meteorite sample PCA82506-3, free of exsolved augite, was studied by in situ high-temperature single-crystal
X-ray diffraction. The sample, monoclinic P21/c, was annealed up to 1,093°C to induce a phase transition from P21/c to C2/c symmetry. The variation with increasing temperature of the lattice parameters and of the intensity of the b-type reflections (h + k = 2n + 1, present only in the P21/c phase) showed a displacive phase transition P21/c to C2/c at a transition temperature T
Tr = 944°C, first order in character. The Fe–Mg exchange kinetics was studied by ex situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction in
a range of temperatures between the closure temperature of the Fe–Mg exchange reaction and the transition temperature. Isothermal
disordering annealing experiments, using the IW buffer, were performed on three crystals at 790, 840 and 865°C. Linear regression
of ln k
D versus 1/T yielded the following equation:

Benthic diatoms represent an important element of global nutritional productivity; to raise attention on their role, which is often neglected due to analytical difficulties, surface (1 cm top layer) coastal sediments from Gerlache inlet to Penguin Bay at Terra Nova Bay were collected and stored at -20 °C. DNA amplification by real-time PCR, based on diatom-specific oligonucleotide primers designed on small-subunit rRNA (SSU rRNA), was performed in addition to diatom conventional cell counting and spectrophotometric determination of photo-pigments. Moreover, cations and anions were determined in sediments with the aim to identify factors involved in the control of diatom abundance. Diatom distribution was found quite heterogeneous displaying significant differences from site to site. The salinity in sediments ranged from 45.1 at Gerlache inlet to 76.2 at Penguin Bay and it was correlated with cell abundance, biodiversity, amount of pigments and amplified DNA.
