Two large-diameter cores from the Greater Antilles Outer Ridge have confirmed the Blake episode 0.1 m.y. B.P. as a genuine paleomagnetic reversed interval at least in that region. The feature is clearly defined in more than 125 stably magnetized specimens of Last Interglacial abyssal brown clay, but its precise age and duration cannot yet be estimated reliably from these or other available data. During the reversed period, positions of the virtual geomagnetic pole lay about 20° from the south geographic pole, with polarity transitions traversing paths in the eastern hemisphere. Each core also recorded a normally polarized excursion within the Blake feature. Because the most acceptable Blake episode data presently span only a small geographic area, they are insufficient for distinguishing between global and local geomagnetic models for the feature.  相似文献

Airborne observations during August 1985 over Greenland and the North American Arctic revealed that dense, discrete haze layers were common above 850 mb. No such hazes were found near the surface in areas remote from local sources of particles. The haze layers aloft were characterized by large light-scattering coefficients due to dry particles (maximum value 1.24 × 10–4m–1) and relatively high total particle concentrations (maximum value 3100 cm–3). Sulfate was the dominant ionic component of the aerosol (0.06 – 1.9 g m–3); carbon soot was also present. Evidence for relatively fresh aerosols, accompanied by NO2 and O3 depletion, was found near, but not within, the haze layers. The hazes probably derived from anthropogenic sources and/or biomass burning at midlatitudes.It is hypothesized that the scavenging of particles by stratus clouds plays an important role in reducing the frequency and intensity of hazes at the surface in the Arctic in summer. Since the detection of haze layers aloft through measurements of column-integrated parameters from the surface (e.g., by lidar) cannot be carried out reliably when clouds are present, such measurements have likely underestimated the occurrence of haze layers in the Arctic, particularly in summer.  相似文献

The development of improved subgrid-scale (SGS) models for large-eddy simulation of scalar transport in the atmospheric boundary layer requires an improved understanding of basic properties of the SGS fluxes. High frequency atmospheric wind speed and temperature data sampled at a height of 1.7 m are used to measure SGS heat fluxes and dissipation of temperature variance, by means of one-dimensional filtering and invoking Taylor's hypothesis. Conditional averaging is used to isolate interesting features of the SGS signals, and to relate them to the large-scale characteristics of the flow, such as the presence of coherent structures. Both mean and conditionally averaged SGS quantities are compared with those obtained using a standard eddy-diffusivity model. Within the limitations imposed by the one-dimensional data analysis, we observe that the model appears unable to reproduce important features of the real signals, such as the negative dissipation of temperature variance associated with strong negative resolved temperature gradients due to the ejection of warm air under unstable atmospheric stability conditions.  相似文献

In recent years field experiments have been undertaken in the lower atmosphere to perform a priori tests of subgrid-scale (SGS) models for large-eddy simulations (LES). The experimental arrangements and data collected have facilitated studies of variables such as the filtered strain rate, SGS stress and dissipation, and the eddy viscosity coefficient. However, the experimental set-ups did not permit analysis of the divergence of the SGS stress (the SGS force vector), which is the term that enters directly in the LES momentum balance equations. Data from a field experiment (SGS2002) in the west desert of Utah, allows the calculation of the SGS force due to the unique 4 × 4 sonic anemometer array. The vector alignment of the SGS force is investigated under a range of atmospheric stabilities. The eddy viscosity model is likely aligned with the measured SGS force under near-neutral and unstable conditions, while its performance is unsatisfactory under stable conditions.  相似文献

Equations of fish yield in lakes as a function of mean annual air temperature have been published for lake whitefish, northern pike, and walleye. Using the contouring and modelling features of a geographic information system (Tydac Technologies' SPANS), we prepared maps of (i) species distribution, (ii) mean annual air temperature, and (iii) temperature increases predicted by the Goddard Institute for Space Studies' global climate model (GISS-GCM). We combined these maps with the yield equations for the three study species to form a regional model predicting the spatial distribution of yield capability in eastern Canada with and without climate change. The GISS-GCM predicts temperature increases of 2.5 to 7.7 °C (mean = 4.5 °C) in eastern Canada, midway between the values predicted by two other GCMs considered. The regional model predicts a substantial spatial re-distribution of fishery capabilities. Areas now supporting high yields become marginal and areas at the margin of, or outside, the current species range become optimal. Without efforts to prevent temperature increases or large artificial efforts to redistribute preferred fish species, Canadian freshwater fisheries will suffer major disruptions given the temperature increases predicted by the GISS-GCM.  相似文献

Long-term spatial and temporal trends in frost indices in Kansas, USA   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Frost indices such as number of frost days (nFDs), number of frost-free days (nFFDs), last spring freeze (LSF), first fall freeze (FFF), and growing-season length (GSL) were calculated using daily minimum air temperature (Tmin) from 23 centennial weather stations across Kansas during four time periods (through 1919, 1920–1949, 1950–1979, and 1980–2009). A frost day is defined as a day with Tmin?<?0 °C. The long- and short-term trends in frost indices were analyzed at monthly, seasonal, and annual timescales. Probability of occurrence of the indices was analyzed at 5 %, 25 %, 50 %, 75 %, and 95 %. Results indicated a general increase in Tmin from 1900 through 2009 causing a decrease in nFDs. LSF and FFF occurred earlier and later than normal in the year, respectively, thereby resulting in an increase in GSL. In general, northwest Kansas recorded the greatest nFD and lowest Tmin, whereas southeast Kansas had the lowest nFD and highest Tmin; however, the magnitude of the trends in these indices varied with location, time period, and time scales. Based on the long-term records in most stations, LSF occurred earlier by 0.1–1.9 days/decade, FFF occurred later by 0.2–0.9 day/decade, and GSL was longer by 0.1–2.5 day/decade. At the 50 % probability level, Independence in the south-eastern part of Kansas had the earliest LSF (6 April), latest FFF (29 October) and longest GSL (207 days). Oberlin (north-western Kansas) recorded the shortest GSL (156 days) and earliest FFF (7 October) had the latest LSF (2 May) at the 50 % probability level. A positive correlation was observed for combinations of indices (LSF and GSL) and elevation, whereas a negative correlation was found between FFF and elevation.  相似文献
