The effects of system closure on the dynamics of productivity and nutrient cycling are examined in four wetlands that differ in plant growth form and magnitudes and sources of water input and nutrient loading. Dynamics in relatively closed ombrotrophicCarex marsh andTaxodium swamp systems from Okefenokee Swamp are compared to those in open, rheotrophic riparian systems. The riparian systems examined includeZizaniopsis marshes along the tidal freshwater portion of the Altamaha River in Georgia and a matureTaxodium-Nyssa swamp along the Cache River in Illinois. Water budgets in the ombrotrophic systems are dominated by precipitation inputs while in the riparian wetlands they are dominated by overbank flooding. Nutrient loading to the open and closed systems differs by only two orders of magnitude, the former depending on atmospheric inputs and the latter depending on tidal and riverine inputs. Comparisons of nutrient import, export, and retention indicate that greater than 90% of inorganic nutrients are retained in the closed systems while less than 5% are retained in the open systems. Nutrient budgets for wetland vegetation, including aboveground uptake, root uptake, leaching, death, and translocation, are constructed. Strong differences in nutrient conservation within plant communities are found between marsh and forested closed systems and between open and closed systems as a whole. There is the indication that nutrients turn over more rapidly and nutrient cycles are less retentive and conservative as systems become more open and nutrient inputs increase. Nutrients turn over more rapidly in marshes with nonwoody vegetation than in swamp forests. This phenomena is partially attributable to the growth form of the vegetation as trees store vast amounts of high Canutrient ratio biomass in boles. Substituting space for time and marsh and swamp wetlands for young and mature ecosystems enables patterns of productivity and nutrient cycling for these wetlands to be compared with Odum’s (1969) predictions of ecosystem development. Patterns of ecosystem development in wetlands agree with those predicted for terrestrial systems in general, but there are many areas of contradiction. The degree of system closure appears to be a major factor controlling nutrient retention and cycling in wetland ecosystems. System closure is also likely to be important in determining the response of wetland systems to global increases in CO2 levels. 相似文献

We study the interplay of various factors causing vertical grain-size changes in alluvial basins using a simple coupled model for sediment transport and downstream partitioning of grain sizes. The sediment-transport model is based on the linear diffusion equation; by deriving this from first principles we show that the main controls on the diffusivity are water discharge and stream type (braided or single-thread). The grain-size partitioning model is based on the assumption that the deposit is dominated by gravel until all gravel in transport has been exhausted, at which point deposition of the finer fractions begins. We then examine the response of an alluvial basin to sinusoidal variation in each of four basic governing variables: input sediment flux, subsidence rate, supplied gravel fraction, and diffusivity (controlled mainly by water flux). We find that, except in the case of variable gravel fraction, the form of the basin response depends strongly on the time-scale over which the variation occurs. There is a natural time-scale for any basin, which we call the ‘equilibrium time’, defined as the square of basin length divided by the diffusivity. We define ‘slow’ variations in imposed independent variables as those whose period is long compared with the equilibrium time. We find that slow variation in subsidence produces smoothly cyclic gravel-front migration, with progradation during times of low sedimentation rate, while slow variation in sediment flux produces gravel progradation during times of high sedimentation rate. Slow variation in diffusivity produces no effect. Conversely, we define ‘rapid’ variations as those whose period is short compared with the equilibrium time. Our model results suggest that basins respond strongly to rapid variation in either sediment flux or diffusivity; in both cases, deep proximal unconformities are associated with abrupt gravel progradation. This progradation occurs during times of either low sediment flux or high diffusivity. On the other hand, basin response to variation in subsidence rate gradually diminishes as the time scale becomes short relative to the equilibrium time. Each of the four variables we have considered - input sediment flux, subsidence, gravel fraction, and diffusivity - is associated with a characteristic response pattern. The progressive packer/zone sampling method was used to identify the bottom of a plume of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the parts-per-million (ppm) range using one well in each of three separate locations. The method involves progressively drilling a 20-foot length of borehole through casing, setting an inflatable packer at the top of the drilled zone, purging the zone of three volumes of water using the airlift method, sampling the zone in situ through the packer string using a bailer, then repeating the procedure.
A plume consisting of chlorinated VOCs, alcohols, and vinyl chloride occurs in a low-yielding fractured bedrock aquifer located in the Passaic Formation at a site in central New Jersey. The thickness of the plume in total VOC concentrations exceeding 1 ppm was determined using the progressive packer/zone sampling method to a depth of 200 feet. The first borehole was completed as a monitoring well in the "hottest" zone encountered during testing. Additional wells were then clustered with this exploratory well to delineate the plume in the parts-per-billion (ppb) range. Cross contamination from previously sampled zones was not a problem as long as total VOCs in the ppm range were targeted and the sample interval was properly purged.
Instead of using a multiple well cluster consisting of an indefinite number of wells to determine the bulk thickness of a plume at a specific location, information from one borehole may suffice during the exploratory phase. A broad zone of dominantly subaerial silicic volcanism associated with regional extensional faulting developed in southern South America during the Middle Jurassic, contemporaneously with the initiation of plutonism along the present Pacific continental margin. Stratigraphic variations observed in cross sections through the silicic Jurassic volcanics along the Pacific margin of southernmost South America indicate that this region of the rift zone developed as volcanism continued during faulting, subsidence and marine innundation. A deep, fault-bounded submarine trough formed near the Pacific margin of the southern part of the volcano-tectonic rift zone during the Late Jurassic. Tholeiitic magma intruded within the trough formed the mafic portion of the floor of this down-faulted basin. During the Early Cretaceous this basin separated an active calc-alkaline volcanic arc, founded on a sliver of continental crust, from the then volcanically quiescent South American continent. Geochemical data suggest that the Jurassic silicic volcanics along the Pacific margin of the volcano-tectonic rift zone were derived by crustal anatexis. Mafic lavas and sills which occur within the silicic volcanics have geochemical affinities with both the tholeiitic basalts forming the ophiolitic lenses which are the remnants of the mafic part of the back-arc basin floor, and also the calc-alkaline rocks of the adjacent Patagonian batholith and their flanking lavas which represent the eroded late Mesozoic calc-alkaline volcanic arc. The source of these tholeiitic and calc-alkaline igneous rocks was partially melted upper mantle material. The igneous and tectonic processes responsible for the development of the volcano-tectonic rift zone and the subsequent back-arc basin are attributed to diapirism in the upper mantle beneath southern South America. The tectonic setting and sequence of igneous and tectonic events suggest that diapirism may have been initiated in response to subduction. 相似文献

The Darvel Bay ophiolite consists of a conformable sequence of mantle harzburgite, a gabbro layer of about 2 km thickness, a basalt layer and associated chert-spilite association of Late Cretaceous to Eocene age, and overlying Miocene melange and olistostrome deposits. The ophiolite is an extension into Borneo of the recently inactive Sulu Archipelago non-volcanic arc. Generally the gabbro layer has been converted to banded plagioclase-amphibole gneisses and the basalt layer to crudely foliated epidote amphibolite. Igneous relicts occur sporadically, especially in the lower gabbro horizons. They have either cumulus granular or gabbroic textures and contain diopsidic augite, bronzite, and a dark brown pargasitic hornblende. The labradorite is occasionally clouded. The partitioning of Fe/Mg between the two pyroxenes and the hornblende suggests an igneous paragenesis and the former allocation of these pyroxene-bearing rocks to the granulite facies is now rejected.The basites have undergone metamorphic re-equlibration, frequently sporadic and imperfec, through amphibolite facies, characterized by hornblende, to greenschist facies, characterized by actinolite. Igneous labradorite frequently persists to the lower grades. The partitioning of Ca/Na between amphibole and plagioclase may be correlated with metamorphic grade.Sub sea-floor retrogressive metamorphism, combined with large scale metasomatism resulting from the circulation of hot brine, appears to be the most appropriate mechanism to explain the sodium enrichment in the basalt layer and the imperfect metamorphic re-equilibration of the ophiolite generally. 相似文献

The heat and mass transfer coefficients for exchange across the fluid dynamic boundary layer over tree leaves were simultaneously determined in a controlled environment chamber. The mass transfer coefficients were calculated from measured values of evaporation, air specific humidity and a value of leaf specific humidity at leaf temperature. The heat transfer coefficients were calculated from measured values of air temperature, leaf temperature and an estimate of the sensible heat flux density calculated as the measured net radiation at the leaf surfaces minus the latent heat flux density. The experiments described in this paper indicate that the equations based on laminar boundary-layer theory can give reasonable estimates of the transfer coefficients of real tree leaves for the velocities most commonly experienced in plant canopies, if they are adjusted by a constant multiplier greater than one. Calculations of local mass transfer coefficients based on temperature measurements at three locations at different distances from the leading edge of the leaves, indicate that the deviation from theory is probably the result of transition to turbulent boundary-layer flow at some distance from the leading edge. 相似文献
