The development of improved subgrid-scale (SGS) models for large-eddy simulation of scalar transport in the atmospheric boundary layer requires an improved understanding of basic properties of the SGS fluxes. High frequency atmospheric wind speed and temperature data sampled at a height of 1.7 m are used to measure SGS heat fluxes and dissipation of temperature variance, by means of one-dimensional filtering and invoking Taylor's hypothesis. Conditional averaging is used to isolate interesting features of the SGS signals, and to relate them to the large-scale characteristics of the flow, such as the presence of coherent structures. Both mean and conditionally averaged SGS quantities are compared with those obtained using a standard eddy-diffusivity model. Within the limitations imposed by the one-dimensional data analysis, we observe that the model appears unable to reproduce important features of the real signals, such as the negative dissipation of temperature variance associated with strong negative resolved temperature gradients due to the ejection of warm air under unstable atmospheric stability conditions.  相似文献

We present epoch 1996, high-quality radial velocity data for HDE 226868, the optical counterpart of Cygnus X-1. Combining our results with all published historical data, we have derived a new ephemeris for the system of HJD 245 0235.29 + n  × 5.5998, which allows accurate orbital phase calculations to be made for any X-ray observations over the last 30 years. We find no evidence for any period change such as that suggested by Ninkov, Walker &38; Yang. We discuss the shortcomings of previous work in establishing the period and orbital elements.  相似文献

A sample of recent type Ia supernovae has been observed from La Palma. Spectra of there supernovae were taken at two different phases: around maximum and between one and two months after maximum. Equations of fish yield in lakes as a function of mean annual air temperature have been published for lake whitefish, northern pike, and walleye. Using the contouring and modelling features of a geographic information system (Tydac Technologies' SPANS), we prepared maps of (i) species distribution, (ii) mean annual air temperature, and (iii) temperature increases predicted by the Goddard Institute for Space Studies' global climate model (GISS-GCM). We combined these maps with the yield equations for the three study species to form a regional model predicting the spatial distribution of yield capability in eastern Canada with and without climate change. The GISS-GCM predicts temperature increases of 2.5 to 7.7 °C (mean = 4.5 °C) in eastern Canada, midway between the values predicted by two other GCMs considered. The regional model predicts a substantial spatial re-distribution of fishery capabilities. Areas now supporting high yields become marginal and areas at the margin of, or outside, the current species range become optimal. Without efforts to prevent temperature increases or large artificial efforts to redistribute preferred fish species, Canadian freshwater fisheries will suffer major disruptions given the temperature increases predicted by the GISS-GCM.  相似文献

An ultraviolet spectral probe for a hydrogen-rich planetary atmosphere, such as that of Jupiter, is suggested, utilizing discrete lines in the H2staggered+ 2u?1g electronic transition. For the Jovian atmosphere, the dominant mechanism for exciting H2+ to its 2u state appears to be photoexcitation, principally through absorption of the solar Lyman-α line. We estimate that the Jovian column emission rate of the H2+ 2u(ν′ = 2, J′ = 1) →1g(ν″ = 18,J″ = 0) fluorescent line at 1236.6 Å is if1 photon cmsu-2 secsu-1; i.e., that if1 photon secsu-1 of this radiation would strike a 15-cm diameter mirror in a Jupiter fly-by at an impact parameter of 3 × 105km. The critical role of corrections to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation in the use of an H2+ probe is discussed.  相似文献

The acceleration of the influential 100 keV electrons in flares observed in hard X-rays and several radio emissions is unknown. Shock-waves and MHD turbulence, successfully applied to interprete interplanetary energetic particles, have recently been called in question concerning energetic flare electrons and ions. Other possible mechanisms are considered which are closely related to the primary flare energy release. In particular, runaway acceleration by the electric field of the reconnection current sheet, bulk heating by microturbulence, and cross-field ion currents due to bulk motion as a primary result of reconnection are reviewed. All three are likely to occur in some way. In this paper we investigate the effects of sphericity on the radiation reflected from a planet with a homogeneous, conservative scattering atmosphere of optical thicknesses of 0.25 and 1.0. We considered a Henyey-Greenstein phase function with asymmetry factors of 0.5 and 0.7. Significant differences were found when these results were compared with the plane-parallel calculations. Also, large violations of the reciprocity theorem, which is only true for plane-parallel calculations, were noted. Results are presented for the radiance versus height distributions as a function of planetary phase angle. These results will be useful to researchers in the field of remote sensing and planetary spectroscopy.  相似文献
