Recent papers attributing the observed microwave opacity of the middle atmosphere of Venus to gaseous sulfur dioxide (SO2) and other cloud-related gases have motivated laboratory measurements of their microwave absorbing properties under simulated conditions for this region. In the pressure range from 1 to 5 atmospheres and in the temperature range from 297 to 355°K, the absorption of SO2 in a carbon dioxide (CO2) atmosphere, at 2.257 and 8.342 GHz, has been found to be approximately 50% larger than that calculated from Van Vleck-Weisskopf theory. The measured absorption is about , where q is the sulfur dioxide number mixing ratio, ? is frequency in gigahertz, p is pressure in atmospheres, and T is temperature in degrees Kelvin. This represents the best-fit expression to the observed pressure dependence, while theoretical values of frequency and temperature dependence are accepted as being consistent with the measurements. Another cloud-related gas, sulfur trioxide (SO3), was also tested in a CO2 atmosphere and found to be relatively transparent. These results reduce the amount of SO2 in the Venus middle atmosphere required to explain the opacity measured by radio occulatation, but this amount still exceeds the abundance measured in situ by atmospheric probes, suggesting that there must be another important source of opacity. Preliminary measurements of the 13-cm absorptivity of gaseous sulfuric acid (H2SO4) show it to be a strong microwave absorber, and thus likely to be responsible for a significant and possibly major part of the observed opacity. 相似文献

Summary Comparative measurements of radiation flux components and turbulent fluxes of energy and CO2 are made at two sites in South West Amazonia: one in a tropical forest reserve and one in a pasture. The data were collected from February 1999 to September 2002, as part of the Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA). During the dry seasons, although precipitation and specific humidity are greatly reduced, the soil moisture storage profiles down to 3.4m indicate that the forest vegetation continues to withdraw water from deep layers in the soil. For this reason, seasonal changes observed in the energy partition and CO2 fluxes in the forest are small, compared to the large reductions in evaporation and photosynthesis observed in the pasture. For the radiation balance, the reflected short wave radiation increases by about 55% when changing from forest to pasture. Combined with an increase of 4.7% in long wave radiation loss, this causes an average reduction of 13.3% in net radiation in the pasture, compared to the forest. In the wet season, the evaporative fraction (E/Rn) at the pasture is 17% lower than at the forest. This difference increases to 24% during the dry season. Daytime CO2 fluxes are 20–28% lower (in absolute values) in the pasture compared to the forest. The night-time respiration in the pasture is also reduced compared to the forest, with averages 44% and 57% lower in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. As the reduction in the nocturnal respiration is larger than the reduction in the daytime uptake, the combined effect is a 19–67% higher daily uptake of CO2 in the pasture, compared to the forest. This high uptake of CO2 in the pasture site is not surprising, since the growth of the vegetation is constantly renewed, as the cattle remove the biomass. 相似文献

Baurusuchus salgadoensis is a new baurusuchid crocodylomorph from Bauru Basin (Cretaceous), Brazil, partially preserved through a complete skull. The fossil comes from a fine sandstone sequence of Adamantina Formation, General Salgado County, São Paulo State. The sedimentary sequence where it was found, located in Fazenda Buriti, is considered Turonian-Santonian in age. The described species _Baurusuchus salgadoensis sp. nov. _ is a baurusuchid with an antorbital fenestra, double external nares with a bony septum, two well-fused supraorbitals, the supratemporal fenestrae larger than the orbits and a quadrangular-shaped laterotemporal fenestra. The position of the external nares, located on anterior and terminal portion of the rostrum together with the theropod-like lateral compression of the snout and teeth are indicators that Baurusuchus salgadoensis was a terrestrial crocodyliform. This was a carnivorous species and the lateral compression of the rostrum could be interpreted as a mechanism to increase the skull resistance forces during biting. The pointed, conical teeth, some with crenulated borders, could be used to perforate and to carve the prey. The geological context of Baurusuchus salgadoensis indicates that it probably lived in a hot and arid climate. 相似文献

Summary Analytical data on the composition of plagioclase from the lower part of the Upper Zone in the eastern Bushveld Complex is presented. Detailed electron microprobe investigations failed to establish any cyclic variation through that sequence but revealed similar variations in An content, potassium and iron concentrations below and above magnetite layers. These findings can be attributed to the heterogeneous nature of the plagioclase both within individual grains and within a given sample, which would mask any possible trends of cryptic variation. The Sr concentration and Sr/Al2O3 ratio of plagioclase, determined by XRF on plagioclase separates, however change slightly at the level of the Main Magnetite Layer, which can possibly be related to the breakdown of density stratified liquid layers within the resident magma. Analyses of plagioclase separates are thus considered to be more suitable to indicate magmatic processes than plagioclase compositions determined by electron microprobe.

Zusammenfassung Analytische Daten von Plagioklasen aus dem unteren Teil der Upper Zone im östlichen Bushveld Komplex werden präsentiert. Detaillierte Untersuchungen mittels Elektronen-strahl-Mikrosonde ergaben keine Hinweise auf eine zyklische Variation in dieser Abfolge, zeigten aber eine dänliche Variation des An-Gehaltes, Bowie der Kalium- und Eisengehalte im Liegenden und Hangenden von Magnetitlagen. Dies läßt sich mit der heterogenen Natur der Plagioklase, sowohl in Einzelkörnern, als auch innerhalb einer Probe erklären, die jeden möglichen verborgenen Variationstrend verdecken würden. Der mittels XRF Analytik an separierten Plagioklasen bestimmte Gehalt an Sr und das Sr/Al2O3 Verhältnis dndern sich allerdings geringfügig im Bereich des Main Magnetite Layer. Dies wird möglicherweise mit derv Zusammenbruch von dichtegeschichteten Schmelzlagen im Magma in Beziehung gebracht. Die Analyse von Plagioklaskonzentraten scheint daher geeigneter zu sein magmatische Prozesse anzuzeigen als Mikrosondenuntersuchungen.

Variations of the cosmic ray cut-off rigidities have been observed at mid latitudes during the magnetic storm period 16–18 December 1971. In the present paper the cut-off changes over Europe are determined on an hourly basis from the registrations of 10 European neutron monitor stations. As a first order approximation it is assumed that the observed cut-off variations originate from a spherical current sheet concentric with the Earth and with a current density proportional to the cosine of the geomagnetic latitude. Applying results obtained by Treiman (1953), the radii of the current sphere can then be deduced from the dependences of the relative cut-off rigidity variations on geomagnetic latitude. The sphere is found to be located between 4 and 6 Earth radii during the main phase of the magnetic storm on 17 December 1971. A comparison of these results with in situ measurements carried out in the equatorial plane by Explorer 45 shows good agreement. 相似文献

A boring instrument for the removal of undisturbed samples from lake sediments at any depth is described. The bore tube cuts a sediment core (diameter 110 mm) in which the layering structure of a 300 mm long section can be examined in its natural undisturbed form. The core is sectioned using a knife made out of mineral glass (thin window glass). The core can be fixed with a piston and laid down horizontally. After removing the glass knife, it can be further processed, sampled, etc. Examples of such cores from the Greifensee, the Hallwilersee and from Lake Lucerne (Bay of Gersau) show the amazing detail and individuality of the sediments. 相似文献

Using reciprocal theorems for dynamic and static boundary value problems, boundary integral equations are presented for wave propagation in elastic, isotropic media and compressible, inviscid fluids in the time domain as well as in the frequency domain. For the analysis of fluid–soil and fluid–structure systems, suitable coupling conditions are prescribed along the interfaces. The numerical treatment of the boundary integral equations consists of a point collocation and of a discretization of the boundary, in which constant and linear approximation functions are assumed. Step-by-step integration is applied to the time-dependent equations, where again the states are taken to be linear and constant over each time interval. These boundary element procedures are used to analyse the response of dams due to horizontal and vertical ground motions considering dam–water interaction and absorption of hydrodynamic pressure waves at the reservoir bottom or at the far end into the soil medium.
