We extend Jokipii and Lerche's analysis of the turbulent structure of our Galaxy by means of a study of the rotation measure of extragalactic sources. Like them we use a simple, statistically homogeneous and isotropic disc model of the Galaxy and assume that the magnetic field has both an average component and a fluctuating one. We assume that the electron density is proportional to some power of the magnetic field (N
eB
n with 1n2). Using the rotation measure data on 242 extragalactic sources given by Vallée and Kronberg we consider both an exponential and a Gaussian two-point correlation function for the (Gaussian) fluctuating component of the magnetic field with a correlation lengthL. We find reasonable agreement between theory and observations for an average magnetic field of about 3 G, a fluctuating magnetic field component with an amplitude of about 2.6G, an average electron density of about 0.03 cm–3, a fluctuating density component of about 0.05 cm–3, and a correlation length of about 300 pc. 相似文献

We present a study focusing on the nature of compact groups through the study of their elliptical galaxies. We determine central
velocity dispersions (σo) for 18 bright elliptical galaxies located in the core of Hickson compact groups and a control sample of 12 brightbona fide ellipticals located in the field or very loose groups. Several tests are carried out to avoid systematic effects in σ measurements.
We use these velocity dispersions to compare the position of 11 compact group galaxies in the Fundamental Plane to that of
a large and homogeneous sample of elliptical galaxies (Burstein et al., 1987).We find that little or no significant difference
exists, as far as the Fundamental Plane is concerned, between ellipticals in compact groups and their counterparts in other
environments.

We study the growth of linear perturbations induced by a generic causal scaling source as a function of the cosmological parameters h , and . We show that for wavenumbers k ≳0.01 h Mpc−1 the spectrum of density and velocity perturbations scales in a similar way to that found in inflationary models with primordial perturbations. The phylum-level meta-analysis approach was applied to assess the status of disturbance of intertidal and subtidal macrobenthos in two estuaries in northeastern Brazil that are subject to different sources of pollution. Previously published estuarine data were included in the body of knowledge considered in the meta-analysis, to improve the reliability of the assessment of the Brazilian samples. Further multivariate and distributional techniques were applied to discriminate differences between estuaries and assess the pollution status of each. Phylum-level multivariate comparisons based on community attributes succeeded in discriminating the estuaries, and species distributions against abundance separated the estuaries in terms of pollution status. The meta-analysis indicated an almost indistinguishable moderate pollution status for both systems. Addition of new comparative data to the meta-analysis did not improve its sensitivity. Although the meta-analysis yielded satisfactory results in detecting disturbance in tropical estuaries, the method is not very sensitive to differences in sources of pollution. 相似文献

This paper describes a case study concerning the use of integrated geophysical methods applied to environmental assessment. The study is focused on an old municipal solid waste sealed landfill site, located in Gaeiras, Central Portugal. The problem is related with leachate overproduction in this domestic and industrial waste landfill that became an environmental problem with urgent assessment, so that a solution could be planned. Due to the lack of accurate information regarding the shape, history and development of the landfill, the use of a set of classical geophysical methods was the option, since they are non-invasive and non-destructive. The available area was small, almost restricted to the landfill area. To conduct this assessment, electromagnetic RF-EM and Geonics EM34, spontaneous potential (SP), vertical electrical soundings (VES) and magnetic prospecting surveys were planned to understand the various problems that could be related with the leachate overproduction. The joint use of these classical geophysical methods was targeted to investigate bedrock depth and structure (RF-EM, EM34 and VES), waste and leachate characteristics (EM34 and magnetics) and groundwater flow (SP) in the landfill. Geophysical results were correlated with hydrogeological information, integrated and interpreted, using geographic information system tools. This paper examines hydrodynamic pressure diagrams due to earthquakes acting on distinct configurations of the upstream face of a dam, considering the reservoir length and different bathymetries of the reservoir bottom. Two suitable mathematical models are used to obtain the dynamic pressure on the dam, and the reservoir free surface oscillation. Conceptual mathematical models are proposed to study the impact of a landslide triggered by an earthquake, and its progress into the reservoir. The waves formed when a landslide advances into the reservoir are tested with the help of laboratory results. These waves and their propagation in the reservoir are studied using experimental data and numerical results, including wave-type analyses based on dimensionless parameters. Two distinct 1DH and 2DV numerical models based on different mathematical formulations are tested. A discussion of physical and numerical results is detailed in a general risk context and uncertainty associated with the input data in a deterministic model. Numerical simulations are performed for the upper and lower limits of the sliding mass velocity diagram which is obtained as a result of the intrinsic uncertainty of the stochastic nature of the friction angle. In tropical areas, mass movements are common phenomena, especially during periods of heavy rainfall, which frequently take
place in the summer season. These phenomena have caused loss of life and serious damage to infrastructure and properties.
The most prominent of these phenomena are landslides that can produce debris flows. Thus, this article aims at determining
affected areas using a model to predict landslide prone areas (SHALSTAB) combined with an empirical model designed to define
the debris flow travel distance and area of deposition. The methodology of this work consists of the following steps: (a)
elaboration of a digital elevation model (DEM), (b) application of the deterministic SHALSTAB model to locate the landslide
prone areas, (c) identification of the debris flow travel distance and area of deposition, and (d) mapping of the affected
areas (landslides and debris flows). This work was developed in an area in which many mass movements occurred after intense
rainfall during the summer season (February 1996) in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeast Brazil. All of the scars produced
by that event were mapped, allowing for validation of the applied models. The model results show that the mapped landslide

Naphthalene (NAP) and phenanthrene (PHE) effects on Salminus brasiliensis, a carnivorous freshwater fish, were investigated using behavioral tests. Larval stages of S. brasiliensis were exposed to water concentrations of 0, 0.04 mg/l, 0.20mg/l and 0.50mg/l for naphthalene and 0, 0.01 mg/l, 0.05 mg/l and 0.1mg/l for phenanthrene during two developmental phases. The prey fish Prochilodus lineatus were not exposed. Visual acuity was measured at the end of phase 2 in individual S. brasiliensis, which were also tested at the end of each phase for number of attacks on prey, number of prey captured, prey capture efficiency, and distance swam. Vision was impaired by PHE exposure, as acuity angles increased in exposed fish. At Stage I 2.3+/-1.2 prey were captured with 46% efficiency in controls compared to 0.4+/-0.3 prey captured with 13.4% efficiency in fish exposed to 0.05 mg PHEl(-1), the LOEL for both endpoints. At Stage II 4.0+/-1.1 preys were captured in controls compared to 2.5+/-0.9 preys captured in fish exposed to 0.01 mg PHEl(-1), the LOEL. Stage II control fish captured prey with 70% efficiency compared to 30% efficiency at Stage II fish exposed to 0.05 mg PHEl(-1), the LOEL. Distance swam was not affected by either NAP or PHE exposure. The exposure of larval stages of S. brasiliensis to realistic water concentrations of PHE impairs foraging skills and could affect recruitment of the species. 相似文献

This study aimed to assess the potential effects of clam dredging and the subsequent recovery of the benthic environment. Two experimental areas located at 6 and 18 m depth were established in order to analyse whether impacts and recovery of benthic environment are depth-related. Study areas were located within an area closed to dredging and two different plots were established at both depths. One of the plots was subjected to intense clam dredge-fishing, while the other was undisturbed and therefore used as control. Sampling followed a BACI design, with samples for macrobenthic, meiobenthic and sediment particle size analysis being taken by SCUBA divers from both areas before and after fishing stress. For both depths, impacts on the benthic environment were very low resulting in high recovery rates. Nevertheless, at shallower depths communities demonstrated a faster recovery. It was shown that depending on the faunal component used as a bioindicator, different results can be observed. Generally deposit-feeding organisms with scales or chitinous plates and vermiform shape (mainly crustaceans, polychaetes and ophiuroids), without external protection, were the most affected by dredging, while some polychaetes without external protection and with a carnivorous feeding mode seemed to be enhanced by fishing. The low level of perturbations induced by the dredging activities was comparable to the impact of surface waves on the bottom, as experiments were undertaken in wave-dominated environments. The coexistence of storm events during the study period proved to have similar or even more deleterious effects on the benthic environment. It appears that communities from hydrodynamic fishing grounds that are well adapted to natural physical stress are not highly affected by dredging. 相似文献
