The hazard posed to aquatic organisms by exposure to aromatic amines will depend on their ability to activate or detoxify these potentially genotoxic compounds. We studied the metabolism of four aromatic amines (p-toluidine, aniline, 2-acetylaminofluorene (2-AAF) and 2-aminofluorene (2-AF)) in Bay mussels (Mytilus edulis) to gain an understanding of their metabolic capabilities in vivo. Mussels rapidly accumulated these compounds from the water column and depurated the majority of their steady-state body burdens as metabolites and unmetabolized parent compounds. The biotransformation pathways of [14C]-labeled parent compounds were determined by analyses of depurated metabolites and tissue residues. Biotransformation of p-toluidine and aniline resulted in the formation of their corresponding N-acetylated detoxification products. Mussels converted small amounts of 2-AAF into a deacetylated product (2-AF) and a mutagenically active metabolite (N-hydroxy-2-AF). 2-AF was extensively detoxified via N-acetylation, which limited the amount of primary amine available for activation.  相似文献

On July 5, 1980 the Hard X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer on board the Solar Maximum Mission observed a complex flare event starting at 22 : 32 UT from AR 2559 (Hale 16955), then at N 28 W 29, which developed finally into a 2-ribbon flare. In this paper we compare the X-ray images with Hα photographs taken at the Big Bear Solar Observatory and identify the site of the most energetic flare phenomena. During the early phases of the event the hard X-rays (>16 keV) came from a compact source located near one of the two bright Hα kernels; we believe the latter are at the footpoints of a compact magnetic loop. The kernel identified with the X-ray source is immediately adjacent to one of the principal sunspots and in fact appears to ‘rotate’ around the sunspot over 90° in the early phase of the flare. Two intense X-ray bursts occur at the site of the rotating kernel, and following each burst the loop fills with hot, X-ray emitting plasma. If the first burst is interpreted as bremsstrahlung from a beam of electrons impinging on a collisionally dominated medium, the energy in such electrons, >16 keV, is ~ 5 × 1030 erg. The altitude of the looptop is 7–10 × 103 km. The temperature structure of the flare is extremely non-homogeneous, and the highest temperatures are found in the top of the loop. A few minutes after the hard X-ray bursts the configuration of the region changes; some of the flare energy is transferred along a system of larger loops that now become the defining structure for a 2-ribbon flare, which is how the flare develops as seen in Hα. In the late, cooling phase of the flare 15 min after maximum, we find a significant component of the plasma at temperatures between 25 and 30 × 106 K.  相似文献

The response of longitudinal-field magnetographs to magnetic fields which are semi-infinite or confined to a horizontal layer is discussed with respect to the interpretation of solar diffuse fields, observed towards the limb, in terms of magnetic canopy models. Numerical results are presented for several reference solar models and typical calibration curves are shown for the C I 9111 Å, Fe I 8688 Å, and Ca II 8542 Å lines in magnetostatic atmospheres derived from a mean model. A procedure is developed for determining the base heights of magnetic canopies from observations with an uncertainty not exceeding the order of a pressure scale height. Until definitive information regarding atmospheric structure inside flux tubes can be developed from theory or observation, reliable field strengths cannot be derived from the data.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The magnetic field above two unrelated active regions on 11 and 12 September, 1974 has been studied using magnetograms obtained in C I 9111, Fe I 8688, Ca II 8542, and H. In C I 9111, originating low in the photosphere, the fields are strong and sharply defined. In Ca II 8542 and H they are very diffuse, with significant diffuseness also in Fe I 8688, due to the spreading of the field with height to form almost horizontal magnetic canopies over regions free of field at lower levels.Within a region between two small sunspots some 140 Mm apart, the canopy height found is typically 300–400 km. Within a small superpenumbra, the canopy height is 150–250 km. In extensive areas surrounding the active regions, over one-half the canopy bases are less than 400–500 km above the c = 1 level, and over 80% less than 700 km.Arguments are given that the chromospheric fibrils (e.g., in H), taken to delineate the field configuration, are not due primarily to lateral variations in field but rather to differences in density or excitation of gas across the lines of force.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

In northern NSW, Australia, coastal populations are forecast to increase dramatically over the next 25 years (the "sea change"). However, management of the effects of development on marine communities is hampered by the lack of data on key habitats. Consequently, we developed a protocol to assess the biodiversity and current human impacts on nearshore reefs, habitats that will be readily affected by coastal development. We assessed four reefs adjacent to each of three population centres targeting fish, mollusc and sessile benthic communities, and debris loads. Community structure was highly variable over all spatial scales indicating that reefs should not be considered equivalent within the planning framework. While, debris loads were relatively low on most reefs, those with highest conservation value also had the highest debris loads suggesting potential conflict between human use and long-term sustainability of reefal communities. Without intervention, this situation will be exacerbated in the future.  相似文献

The proposed plan for enrichment of the Sulu Sea, Philippines, a region of rich marine biodiversity, with thousands of tonnes of urea in order to stimulate algal blooms and sequester carbon is flawed for multiple reasons. Urea is preferentially used as a nitrogen source by some cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates, many of which are neutrally or positively buoyant. Biological pumps to the deep sea are classically leaky, and the inefficient burial of new biomass makes the estimation of a net loss of carbon from the atmosphere questionable at best. The potential for growth of toxic dinoflagellates is also high, as many grow well on urea and some even increase their toxicity when grown on urea. Many toxic dinoflagellates form cysts which can settle to the sediment and germinate in subsequent years, forming new blooms even without further fertilization. If large-scale blooms do occur, it is likely that they will contribute to hypoxia in the bottom waters upon decomposition. Lastly, urea production requires fossil fuel usage, further limiting the potential for net carbon sequestration. The environmental and economic impacts are potentially great and need to be rigorously assessed.  相似文献

Mechanical erosion rates are important factors in understanding how continents evolve. Mechanical erosion is much faster than chemical erosion, especially for highly elevated regions of the Earth's surface. It is a principal way in which mountain ranges are removed, exposing deep metamorphic roots, which comprise much of the older portions of the continental masses. In addition, there has to be a long-term balance between erosion and mountain building. A new data set allows us to explore in greater detail some of the many factors which control mechanical erosion rates. The most important factors are some expression of the average slope of a drainage basin, some measurement of the amount of water available for erosion, some environmental measurements, and also a measurement of basin length, for which we have no good explanation. The estimate of global mechanical erosion rate obtained here is considerably lower than those obtained by some other workers, some of whom have concentrated on the fact that smaller river basins tend to get eroded faster than larger basins, and it is mainly smaller basins which have not been measured and which are therefore not allowed for by simple arithmetic averaging of observed erosion rates. It is shown here that although smaller basins are eroded faster, this is mainly because they are steeper than larger basins. We also show that extrapolation of current data to smaller basins does not work because the observed continental area which is draining to the ocean cannot be attained by the simplest extrapolation scheme. This study examined the effect of copper on the settlement success of planula larvae of the reef-building coral Acropora tenuis during 1994 and 1996 at Magnetic Island, Great Barrier Reef. Copper concentrations of 2, 10, 20 μg l−1 did not inhibit larval settlement after 48-h exposure. However, copper concentrations of 42 μg l−1 and 81 μg l−1 significantly reduced settlement success of A. tenuis larvae after 48-h exposure compared with controls using normal seawater. At 200 μg l−1 copper, all larvae died. EC50 values for the effect of copper on A. tenuis larval settlement were calculated from the 1996 results using measured copper concentrations. The 48-h EC50 was 35 μg l−1 with an upper and lower 95% confidence limit of 37 μg l−1 and 32 μg l−1, respectively. The 48-h NOEC value for both experiments was 20 μg l−1 copper. These experiments provide some of the first data on sub-lethal effects of trace metals on tropical marine organisms, and demonstrate that relatively low copper concentrations impair or inhibit settlement of coral larvae.  相似文献

介绍了正在建设中的全球湖泊数据库的情况,以及该数据库的水位资料所反映的晚更新世末期以来全球湿润状况的变化。通过大尺度湖水位变化的时空分析,结果显示当今湖泊水位状态较历史时期而言,位于低纬干旱或半干旱地区的湖泊水位较低,而中纬及高纬湿润地区的湖泊水位较高。自末次冰盛期以来,北美大陆中南部地区湖泊水位自高至低,反映出该地区气候条件由湿变干,至早、中全新世达最干旱。而在非洲及南亚季风地区,冷期偏干,暖期偏湿。特别是在早、中全新世的温暖时期,为历史上最湿润时期。北半球中纬度地带的气候干湿变化与北半球冰盖的存在及其消融导致的西风带的南北摆动有关;而北半球季风区在早、中全新世出现的高潮面与北半球夏季辐射的增加有密切联系。  相似文献
