Water-level fluctuations in closed-basin lakes can be used to reconstruct past hydrological changes, and the recognition of spatially coherent patterns in lake behavior provides evidence for changes in climate. The geological records of water level in many lakes, particularly those in arid regions, are by nature incomplete. The fragmentary nature of the data poses special problems for comparison of records and identification of regions where lakes behave similarly. An unconventional method of assessing similarity in the behavior of lakes is used with multidimensional scaling to place lakes in a low-dimensional space. Weights are used to reflect the amount of information available for each particular comparison. The similarity measure is based on evidence for changes in lake depth between successive time intervals and on independent evidence for the direction of change at any given time. Groups (clusters) of lakes in the low-dimensional space are identified by mutual proximity. The method was applied to a set of 65 Late Quaternary lake-level records from North America. About one-third of the lakes had too little weight to be placeable, about one-third were in clusters, and about one-third showed unique behavior. Those lakes which clustered showed four distinct types of record, characteristic of well-defined geographic regions. This ability to distinguish spatially coherent patterns on internal evidence alone strengthens the basis for using lake-level records for regional palaeoclimatic reconstructions. 相似文献

This paper presents first results of the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) recently launched aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). CDS is a twin spectrometer, operating in the extreme ultraviolet range 151–785 Å. Thus, it can detect emission lines from trace elements in the corona and transition region which will be used to provide diagnostic information on the solar atmosphere. A comprehensive case and statistical study of CME onsets has been conducted on the solar limb using the CDS, LASCO and EIT
instruments aboard the SOHO spacecraft. This is the first dedicated campaign to establish firmly the EUV signatures of CME
onsets and is based on a series of low-corona observing campaigns made in 2002. The event database consisted of 36 multiple
emission line sequences observed with CDS and the study builds, in particular, on studies of EUV coronal dimming which have
been associated with CME onsets. We witness a range of dimming events in EUV coronal emission line data. Shorter events, commonly
of duration < 4 hours, we find are indirectly associated with CME onsets whereas longer-duration dimmings (> 4 hours) appear
to be either due to coronal evolution or rotational effects. However, for some CME onsets, where the CDS pointing was appropriate,
no dimming was observed. Dimming observed in EIT typically occurred immediately after the launch of a loop or prominence,
and in 5 out of 9 events there is evidence of a matter buildup within the loop before launch. A total of 10 events occurred
where CDS was used to directly observe the CME footprint, but no relationship between these events was found. The results
suggest that the response of the corona to a CME launch differs between the low (1.0 R
⊙≤R≤1.2 R
⊙) and middle (1.2 R
⊙<R≤2.0 R
⊙) corona regions, hence implying a difference between dimming observations conducted with different instruments. 相似文献

In many coastal cities around the world, marine outfalls are used for disposal of partially treated wastewater effluent. The combined use of land-based treatment and marine discharge can be a cost-effective and environmentally acceptable sewage strategy. Before 2001, screened sewage was discharged into Victoria Harbour through many small outfalls. After 2001, the Hong Kong Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS) was implemented to improve the water quality in Victoria Harbour and surrounding waters. Stage I of HATS involved the construction of a 24 km long deep tunnel sewerage system to collect sewage from the densely populated urban areas of Hong Kong to a centralized sewage treatment plant at Stonecutters Island. A sewage flow of 1.4 million m3 d−1 receives Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment (CEPT) followed by discharge via a 1.2 km long outfall 2 km west of the harbor. The ecosystem recovery in Victoria Harbour and the environmental response to sewage abatement after the implementation of HATS was studied using a 21-year data set from long term monthly water quality monitoring. Overall, the pollution control scheme has achieved the intended objectives. The sewage abatement has resulted in improved water quality in terms of a significant reduction in nutrients and an increase in bottom DO levels. Furthermore, due to the efficient tidal mixing and flushing, the impact of the HATS discharge on water quality in the vicinity of the outfall location is relatively limited. However, Chl a concentrations have not been reduced in Victoria Harbour where algal growth is limited by hydrodynamic mixing and water clarity rather than nutrient concentrations. Phosphorus removal in the summer is suggested to reduce the risk of algal blooms in the more weakly-flushed and stratified southern waters, while nutrient removal is less important in other seasons due to the pronounced role played by hydrodynamic mixing. The need for disinfection of the effluent to reduce bacterial (E. coli) concentrations to acceptable levels is also confirmed and has recently been implemented. 相似文献

Coal-bearing basins have increased economic potential for enhanced geothermal systems owing to thermal insulation provided by the coal and associated organic-rich sediments. In such insulation-dominated prospects, heat refraction effects associated with buried insulators can produce negative surface heat-flow anomalies in the most prospective areas. The Latrobe Valley in Victoria, Australia, is an archetypal coal basin. Using numerical simulations incorporating the coal geometries, we show that the Latrobe Valley coals might elevate the temperature of the rocks at 4 km depth by some 30–35°C relative to a ‘base’ condition with no coal. This effectively boosts the average geothermal gradient by about 30%, with a corresponding improvement in the economic case for geothermal energy in the Latrobe Valley. 相似文献

Inland dunes occur over a large part of east-central lower Michigan, where they mantle glaciolacustrine and outwash surfaces that were exposed around 12,000 yrs. B.P. The dunes are parabolic, with northwest-oriented limbs, and occur in swampy landscapes, suggesting that paleoclimatic conditions at the time of their formation were much drier and possibly windier. In order to determine whether the dunes stabilized concurrently or randomly in time and space, surface soils were studied on 30 dunes in the area and quantitatively analyzed for relative differences. Soils data from the dunes indicate concurrent stabilization, following a period of regional mobilization of aeolian sand. Surface soils have formed by podzolization, in uniform parent materials, and are morphologically similar throughout the area. All the soils are weakly developed, with subtle variations on a A-E-Bs-BC-C horizonation sequence. Munsell colors of Bs horizons are remarkably uniform, with 27 of 30 sites exhibiting values of 4 and chromas of 6. Chemical data suggest that Fe and Al translocation has been uniform throughout the region. When compared with soils of known age in northwest lower Michigan, the data indicate that dunes in the region had stabilized at least by 4000 yrs. B.P., leaving an approximately 8000-yr. interval in which they could have formed. In contrast to the prevailing southwesterly winds of today, dune-forming winds were dominantly from the northwest. Traditionally regarded as a relict permafrost and periglacial landscape that lay beyond the limits of Pleistocene glaciation, the granite uplands of northern Dartmoor in south‐west England in fact contain geomorphological evidence for the former existence of a plateau ice cap, making the area the location of the southernmost independent glacier mass in the British Isles. In addition to weakly U‐shaped valleys, the most prominent evidence comprises arcuate and linear bouldery ridges and hummocky valley floor drift, which are interpreted as latero‐frontal moraines deposited by the outlet glacier lobes of a plateau ice cap. Inset sequences of these depositional landforms, in association with meltwater channels, demarcate the receding margins of the glacier lobes. A numerical model of ice cap development shows that a predominantly thin plateau icefield type glaciation is required in order to produce significant ice flow into surrounding valleys. The highest and most extensive plateau areas were occupied by ice for the longest cumulative period of time throughout the Pleistocene, thereby explaining: (1) the lack of tors in such areas as the product of ‘average’ glacial conditions preferentially removing tors or dampening their production rates, (2) the survival of high relief tors during glaciation if they occupied summits too narrow to develop thick and erosive glacier ice, and (3) the survival of subdued tors in areas glaciated less regularly during the Pleistocene. 相似文献

Because of the importance of snow for river discharge in mountain regions, hydrological research often focuses on seasonally snow-covered zones. However, in many basins the majority of the land surface area is intermittently snow-covered. Discharge monitoring in these areas is less common, so their contributions to downstream rivers remain largely unknown. We evaluated hydrological differences between three intermittently snow-covered (mean annual Jan 1–Jul 3 snow persistence <60%) and two seasonally snow-covered headwater catchments in the Colorado Front Range. We compared water balance variables to evaluate how and why discharge differs between the snow zones and estimated the relative contributions from each snow zone to regional river discharge. We focused on water years 2016–2019 and used a combination of in situ sensors and regional climate datasets. Annual discharge from the intermittent snow zone was low for all three catchments (10–77 mm), despite covering a wide range in annual snow persistence (25%–64%), whereas annual discharge from the seasonal snow zone was up to 73 times higher. Soil moisture in the seasonal snow zone was above field capacity for longer periods of time than in the intermittent snow zone, and the intermittent snow zone was uniquely subject to soil freezing (up to 102 days per year). For most of the year, potential evapotranspiration exceeded rainfall and snowmelt inputs in the intermittent snow zone, but was lower than rainfall and snowmelt inputs in the seasonal snow zone. This is likely a primary driver of the differences in soil moisture and discharge for catchments with a seasonal versus intermittent snow cover. Despite the large difference in discharge between these two snow zones, the intermittent snow zone contributed about a quarter of the discharge in the regional river, highlighting the importance of studying discharge generation across all elevations. 相似文献

We propose a mechanism to explain suggested links between seismic activity and ionospheric changes detected overhead. Specifically, we explain changes in the natural extremely low-frequency (ELF) radio noise recently observed in the topside ionosphere aboard the DEMETER satellite at night, before major earthquakes. Our mechanism utilises increased electrical conductivity of surface layer air before a major earthquake, which reduces the surface-ionosphere electrical resistance. This increases the vertical fair weather current, and (to maintain continuity of electron flow) lowers the ionosphere. Magnitudes of crucial parameters are estimated and found to be consistent with observations. Natural variability in ionospheric and atmospheric electrical properties is evaluated, and may be overcome using a hybrid detection approach. Suggested experiments to investigate the mechanism involve measuring the cut-off frequency of ELF “tweeks”, the amplitude and phase of very low frequency radio waves in the Earth–ionosphere waveguide, or medium frequency radar, incoherent scatter or rocket studies of the lower ionospheric electron density. 相似文献
