We present 8.0–13.0 micron spectra (Δλλ = 0.02?0.03) for six main belt asteroids, which range from 58 to 220 km in diameter and sample the five principal taxonomic classes (C, S, M, R and E). Narrow, well-defined silicate emission features are present on two of the asteroids, the C-type 19 Fortuna and the M-type 21 Lutetia. No comparable emission features are observed on the S-types 11 Parthenope and 14 Irene, the R-type 349 Dembowska or the E-type 64 Angelina.  相似文献

Assuming that the formation of the ring current belt is a direct consequence of an enhanced crosstail electric field and hence of an enhanced convection, we calculate the total ring current kinetic energy (KR) and the ring current energy injection rate (UR) as a function of the cross-tail electric field (ECT); the cross-tail electric field is assumed to have a step function-like increase. The loss of ring current particles due to recombination and charge-exchange is assumed to be distributed over the whole ring current region. It is found that: (1) the steady-state ring current energy KR is approximately linearly proportional to ECT; (2) the characteristic time tc for KR to reach the saturation level is 3–4 h; (3) the injection rate UR is proportional to ECTβ where β ? 1.33?1.52; and (4) the characteristic time tp for UR to reach the peak value is 1–2 h and the peak UR value is 50% higher than the steady-state value. Since β is now determined specifically for an enhanced convection, an observational determination of the relationship between ECT(or φCT) and UR is essential to a better understanding of ring current formation processes. If the observed β is greater than 1.5, additional processes (e.g. an injection of heavy ions from the ionosphere to the plasma sheet and subsequently to the ring current region) may be required.  相似文献

On the basis of issues raised by observations of BL Lac objects and the qualitative jet model proposed by Bakeret al. in 1988, we have been led to consider the quantitative role of coherent, stimulated emission in jets and construct a new jet model of blazars in which a relativistic electron beam with an axial symmetric, power-law distribution is injected from the central engine into the jet plasma. We study quantitatively the synchrotron emission of the relativistic electron beams. Using the weak turbulent theory of plasma, we discuss the interaction between relativistic electron beams and jet plasma, and the roles of stimulated emission. The main results are:
  1. The synchrotron emission increases sensitively with the increase of the angle between the direction of the beam and the magnetic field. When the direction of the beam is vertical to the magnetic field, the synchrotron emission reaches its maximum, i.e. the emitted waves are beamed in the direction of the jet axis. We suggest that radio selected BL Lac objects belong to this extreme classification.
  2. The synchrotron emission of the relativistic beam increases rapidly with the increase of the Lorentz factor of the relativistic electron,γ, whenγ ≤ 22.5, then decreases rapidly with increase ofγ.
  3. The stimulated emission also increases with increasing Lorentz factorγ of the relativistic electrons whenγ ≤ 35 and then decreases with the increasingγ. The maximum stimulated emission and the maximum synchrotron emission occur at different frequencies. Stimulated emission is probably very important and reasonable flare mechanism in blazars.
  4. The rapid polarization position angle (PA) swings may arise from the interaction between the relativistic electron beam and the turbulent plasma.

The weather-imageries from the INSAT group of satellites provide reliable and concurrent multistation cloud-cover data — an important input for a proper selection of an observatory site for optical, infra-red and γ-ray astronomy work. Using these data, it is shown that Gurushikar, Mt. Abu, promises to be an excellent site for setting up the proposed GRACE facility for high-sensitivity Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Cerenkov Experiments.  相似文献

Abstract— Neodymium, strontium, and chromium isotopic studies of the LEW86010 angrite established its absolute age and the formation interval between its crystallization and condensation of Allende CAIs from the solar nebula. Pyroxene and phosphate were found to contain ~98% of its Sm and Nd inventory. A conventional 147Sm-143Nd isochron yielded an age of 4.53 ± 0.04 Ga (2 σ) and ?143 Nd = 0.45 ± 1.1. An 146Sm-142Nd isochron gives initial 146Sm/144Sm = 0.0076 ± 0.0009 and ?143 Nd = ?2.5 ± 0.4. The Rb-Sr analyses give initial 87Sr/86Sr (I87Sr) = 0.698972 ± 8 and 0.698970 ± 18 for LEW and ADOR, respectively, relative to 87Sr/86Sr = 0.71025 for NBS987. The difference, ΔI87Sr, between I87Sr for the angrites and literature values for Allende CAIs, corresponds to ~9 Ma of growth in a solar nebula with a CI chondrite value of 87Rb/86Sr = 0.91, or ~5 Ma in a nebula with solar photospheric 87Rb/86Sr = 1.51. Excess 53Cr from extinct 53Mn (t1/2 = 3.7 Ma) in LEW86010 corresponds to initial 53Mn/55Mn = 1.44 ± 0.07 × 10?6 and closure to Cr isotopic homogenization 18.2 ± 1.7 Ma after formation of Allende inclusions, assuming initial 53Mn/55Mn = 4.4 ± 1.0 × 10?5 for the inclusions as previously reported by the Paris group (Birck and Allegre, 1988). The 146Sm/144Sm value found for LEW86010 corresponds to solar system initial (146Sm/144Sm)o = 0.0080 ± 0.0009 for crystallization 8 Ma after Allende, the difference between Pb-Pb ages of angrites and Allende, or 0.0086 ± 0.0009 for crystallization 18 Ma after Allende, using the Mn-Cr formation interval. The isotopic data are discussed in the context of a model in which an undifferentiated “chondritic” parent body formed from the solar nebula ~2 Ma after Allende CAIs and subsequently underwent differentiation accompanied by loss of volatiles. Parent bodies with Rb/Sr similar to that of CI, CM, or CO chondrites could satisfy the Cr and Sr isotopic systematics. If the angrite parent body had Rb/Sr similar to that of CV meteorites, it would have to form slightly later, ~2.6 Ma after the CAIs, to satisfy the Sr and Cr isotopic systematics.  相似文献

Elemental abundances of the VH group of cosmic radiation have been measured in the energy interval 250–550 MeV nucl–1 in a balloon exposure at Sioux Falls (South Dakota) of a plastic detector LeXAN stack. The so obtained abundances have been extrapolated to the sources in the frame of the homogeneous model correcting for energy loss. After taking into account solar modulation, the best fit to model values has led to a escape mean free path e = 5E –0.4 g cm–2, whereE is the energy in GeV nucl–1, forE>1 GeV nucl–1, and a constant e = 5 g cm–2 forE1 GeV nucl–1. When turning to the diffusion model, also including an energy loss term, a diffusion coefficientD=3×1028 cm2 s–1 has been estimated.  相似文献

Fine time resolution observations of the angular distributions of the intensities of energetic electrons (220 ≤ E e ≤ 500 keV) by the IMP-7 and 8 spacecraft during the onsets of solar electron events and the technique of mapping the solar wind to the solar corona have been incorporated in this work in order to obtain the large-angle scattering distance of these particles under different configurations of the large scale structure of the interplanetary medium. It is found that in the presence of stream-stream interaction regions with compressed magnetic fields beyong 1 AU, the large-angle scattering is determined by the distance along the streamlines from the spacecraft to their intersection by a faster solar wind stream. In cases of diverging magnetic fields the estimated large-angle scattering distance exceeds 1 AU.  相似文献

We establish limits on the total radiant energy of solar flares during the period 1980 February – November, using the solar-constant monitor (ACRIM) on board the Solar Maximum Mission. Typical limits amount to 6 × 1029 erg/s for a 32-second integration time, with 5σ statistical significance, for an impulsive emission; for a gradual component, about 4 × 1032 ergs total radiant energy. The limits lie about an order of magnitude higher than the total radiant energy estimated from the various known emission components, suggesting that no heretofore unknown dominant component of flare radiation exists.  相似文献
