Geophysical flows with anisotropic turbulence and dispersive waves: flows with stable stratification
The quasi-normal scale elimination (QNSE) is an analytical spectral theory of turbulence based upon a successive ensemble
averaging of the velocity and temperature modes over the smallest scales of motion and calculating corresponding eddy viscosity
and eddy diffusivity. By extending the process of successive ensemble averaging to the turbulence macroscale one eliminates
all fluctuating scales and arrives at models analogous to the conventional Reynolds stress closures. The scale dependency
embedded in the QNSE method reflects contributions from different processes on different scales. Two of the most important
processes in stably stratified turbulence, internal wave propagation and flow anisotropization, are explicitly accounted for
in the QNSE formalism. For relatively weak stratification, the theory becomes amenable to analytical processing revealing
just how increasing stratification modifies the flow field via growing anisotropy and gravity wave radiation. The QNSE theory
yields the dispersion relation for internal waves in the presence of turbulence and provides a theoretical reasoning for the
Gargett et al. (J Phys Oceanogr 11:1258–1271, 1981) scaling of the vertical shear spectrum. In addition, it shows that the internal wave breaking and flow anisotropization
void the notion of the critical Richardson number at which turbulence is fully suppressed. The isopycnal and diapycnal viscosities
and diffusivities can be expressed in the form of the Richardson diffusion laws thus providing a theoretical framework for
the Okubo dispersion diagrams. Transitions in the spectral slopes can be associated with the turbulence- and wave-dominated
ranges and have direct implications for the transport processes. We show that only quasi-isotropic, turbulence-dominated scales
contribute to the diapycnal diffusivity. On larger, buoyancy dominated scales, the diapycnal diffusivity becomes scale independent.
This result underscores the well-known fact that waves can only transfer momentum but not a scalar and sheds a new light upon
the Ellison–Britter–Osborn mixing model. It also provides a general framework for separation of the effects of turbulence
and waves even if they act on the same spatial and temporal scales. The QNSE theory-based turbulence models have been tested
in various applications and demonstrated reliable performance. It is suggested that these models present a viable alternative

Along the deformation front of the North Ecuador–South Colombia (NESC) margin, both surface heat flow and trench sediment thickness show prominent along-strike variations, indicating significant spatial variations in sedimentation rate. Investigating these variations helps us address the important question of how trench sedimentation influences the temperature distribution along the interplate contact and the extent of the megathrust seismogenic zone. We examine this issue by analysing 1/ a new dense reflection data set, 2/ pre-stack depth migration of selected multichannel seismic reflection lines, 3/ numerous newly-identified bottom-simulating reflectors and 4/ the first heat probe measurements in the region. We develop thermal models that include sediment deposition and compaction on the cooling oceanic plate as well as viscous corner flow in the mantle wedge. We estimate that the temperature from 60–150 °C to 350–450 °C, commonly associated with the updip and downdip limits of the seismogenic zone, extends along the plate interface over a downdip distance of 160 to 190 ± 20 km. We conclude that the updip limit of the seismogenic zone for the great megathrust earthquake of 1979 is associated with low-temperature (60–70 °C) processes. Our models also suggest that 60–70% of the two-fold decrease in measured heat flow from 3°N to 2.8°N is related to an abrupt southward increase in sedimentation rate in the trench. Such a change may potentially induce a landward shift of the 60–150 °C isotherms, and thus the updip limit of the seismogenic zone, by 10 to 20 km. 相似文献

We study the relationship between changes in equatorial stratification and low frequency El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) amplitude modulation in a coupled general circulation model (CGCM) that uses an anomaly coupling strategy to prevent climate drifts in the mean state. The stratification is intensified at upper levels in the western and central equatorial Pacific during periods of high ENSO amplitude. Furthermore, changes in equatorial stratification are connected with subsurface temperature anomalies originating from the central south tropical Pacific. The correlation analysis of ocean temperature anomalies against an index for the ENSO modulation supports the hypothesis of the existence of an oceanic “tunnel” that connects the south tropical Pacific to the equatorial wave guide. Further analysis of the wind stress projection coefficient onto the oceanic baroclinic modes suggests that the low frequency modulation of ENSO amplitude is associated with a significant contribution of higher-order modes in the western and central equatorial Pacific. In the light of these results, we suggest that, in the CGCM, change in the baroclinic mode energy distribution associated with low frequency ENSO amplitude modulation have its source in the central south tropical Pacific. 相似文献

Spatial and temporal structures of interannual-to-decadal variability in the tropical Pacific Ocean are investigated using results from a global atmosphere–ocean coupled general circulation model. The model produces quite realistic mean state characteristics, despite a sea surface temperature cold bias and a thermocline that is shallower than observations in the western Pacific. The periodicity and spatial patterns of the modelled El Niño Southern Oscillations (ENSO) compare well with those observed over the last 100 years, although the quasi-biennial timescale is dominant. Lag-regression analysis between the mean zonal wind stress and the 20°C isotherm depth suggests that the recently proposed recharge-oscillator paradigm is operating in the model. Decadal thermocline variability is characterized by enhanced variance over the western tropical South Pacific (~7°S). The associated subsurface temperature variability is primarily due to adiabatic displacements of the thermocline as a whole, arising from Ekman pumping anomalies located in the central Pacific, south of the equator. Related wind anomalies appear to be caused by SST anomalies in the eastern equatorial Pacific. This quasi-decadal variability has a timescale between 8 years and 20 years. The relationship between this decadal tropical mode and the low-frequency modulation of ENSO variance is also discussed. Results question the commonly accepted hypothesis that the low-frequency modulation of ENSO is due to decadal changes of the mean state characteristics. 相似文献

Regarding new bipolar magnetic regions as sources of flux, we have computed the evolution of the photospheric magnetic field during 1976–1984 and derived the corresponding evolution of the mean line-of-sight field as seen from Earth. We obtained a good, but imperfect, agreement between the observed mean field and the field computed for a nominal choice of flux transport parameters. Also, we determined the response of the computed mean field to variations in the transport parameters and the source properties. The results lead us to regard the mean-field evolution as a random-walk process with dissipation. New eruptions of flux produce the random walk, and together differential rotation, meridional flow (if present), and diffusion provide the dissipation. The net effect of each new source depends on its strength and orientation (relative to the strength and orientation of the mean field) and on the time elapsed before the next eruption (relative to the decay time of the field). Thus the mean field evolves principally due to the contributions of the larger sources, which produce a strong, gradually evolving field near sunspot maximum but a weak, sporadically evolving field near sunspot minimum.E. In connection with the problem of the initial singularity in the framework of the Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor isotropic cosmology, the dynamics of the early stages of the expansion is studied on the basis of the general analytical solutions for flat models withP=n (0n1). The sourceless scalar field, which plays a role of effective source of the geometry, entirely changes the character of the initial expansion, whereas in the absense of it the dynamics of the models almost does not differ from GR-case. If the connecting parameter <–6 then the sourceless scalar field removes the initial singularity for any equations of state, and provides the regular transition form the compression to the expansion through the non-stationary state with
. If is positive, the singularity of vacuum nature necessarily exists; the sourceless scalar-field being prevalent over the material sources (at least for P1/3) near the singularity. For P>1/3 parallel with the vacuum singularity the singular initial state with dominant role of gravitating matter is possible. In the course of expansion, the influence of gravitating matter and curvature-which as nonessential at the early stage in comparison with sourceless -field — becomes dominant, and all models approach the Machian ones which differs slightly from corresponding GR-models. If is negative (<–6) the sourceless -field slows down the initial expansion and increases essentially the real age of the Universe; it can also influence the primordial nuclear synthesis by diminishing in particular the content of He4. It is shown that a knowledge of the sign gives us the information about the nature of the initial Universe state.
Zusammenfassung In diesem Artikel betrachtet man die Einwirkung des quellosen skalaren Feld auf die Dynamik der früheren Stadien der Ausdehnung der kosmologischen Modellen. Man zeigt auch die Möglichkeit der Existenz eines unsingulären ursprünglichen Zustand in der Brans-Dickeschen skalar-tensorischen Kosmologie.
