Groundwater recharge studies are essential for investigating the feasibility of using the reclaimed lands in Singapore for subsurface storage and recovery of water. Through time‐series and spectral analyses, net recharge percentages and stress‐filtering characteristics at the reclaimed land were found to depend strongly on the stress transfer velocity, which was a combined function of rainfall pattern and vadose zone thickness. Based on stress transfer velocity, a theory was established to provide logical explanations for the rainfall–recharge relationship, the observed stress‐filtering characteristics and the recharge percentage characteristics at the unconfined sandy aquifer. Although the reclaimed land site has a lithollogically homogeneous soil profile, a non‐uniform recharge pattern was observed to be influenced pronouncedly by the uneven density distribution of bush grasses. Under a bare soil condition, significantly lower recharge percentages were observed for areas under the influence of offshore tides. The unconfined sandy aquifer appears to dampen out the wave propagation of offshore tides rapidly within a short distance from the tidal source, though it has a fairly straight shoreline and is created from highly compacted sand fills. Diatomaceous ooze of the shelf off Walvis Bay (S.W. Africa) was analysed for lipid material. The lipids from the sediment consist of a mixture of hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, fatty acids, sterols, carotenoid pigments and chlorophylls. The total fatty acid mixture has been analysed by capillary gas chromatography mass spectrometry and shown to consist of straight chain, iso-, anteiso- and isoprenoid acids. The environmental setting of the S.W. African shelf (Walvis Bay) makes it possible to discuss these fatty acids as markers for the fate of organic matter. The acids in the sediment point to a generation during passage of algal lipids through levels of microbial activity either on or slightly above the burial surface.  相似文献

Immunological and biochemical techniques were used to investigate organic matter in microbial mats from Solar Lake (Sinai, Egypt). Antibodies, elicited in rabbits against samples taken at different depths from a core of these mats, were used for the detection of immunological determinants preserved in these samples. Special attention was given to an antiserum directed against a top mat fraction (3–10 mm depth) and an antiserum against a fraction from a lower section of the core (380–390 mm depth). Both antisera, tested in a dot-blot immunobinding assay, were found to give positive reactions with organic matter from different depths of the sediment. An immunohistochemical experiment with the antisera points to antigenic determinants on Recent and subfossil sheaths of Microcoleus. In addition, extracts of sediment samples were submitted to electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels in order to characterize the separated macromolecules by immunological means. The results showed a rapid decrease in the number of antigenic determinants from Recent to subfossil samples. However, even in the deepest layers of the sediment (690–700 mm depth) intact biopolymers were detected.  相似文献

This study compared summer stream temperature between two years in the Star Creek catchment, Alberta, a headwater basin on the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Star Creek is a subsurface water dominated stream, which represents important habitat for native salmonid species. Hydrometeorological data from May to September of 2010 and 2011 accompanied by stream energy budget calculations were used to describe the drivers of stream temperature in this small forested stream. Mean, maximum, and minimum weekly stream temperatures were lower from May to August and higher in September 2011 compared to 2010. Weekly range in stream temperature was also different between years with a higher range in 2010. Inter‐annual stream temperature variation was attributed discharge differences between years, shown to be primarily governed by catchment‐scale moisture conditions. This study demonstrates that both meteorological and hydrological processes must be considered in order to understand stream temperature response to changing environmental conditions in mountainous regions. Wax esters (ranging from C32 to C44), very long mid-chain ketones (ranging from C31 to C43) and sterol ethers were isolated from Walvis Bay diatomaceous ooze and identified by glass capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and direct probe high-resolution mass spectrometry.The wax ester compositions of co-eluting wax esters with the same molecular weight were determined from fragment ions characteristic for the alcohol and fatty acid moieties. Dominant wax esters are the C3(16F-20A), C36(18F-18A), C38(16F-22A), C38(18F-20A), C40(18F-22A), C40(20F-20A) and C40(24F-16A).The presence of isoprenoid wax esters and the chain length distributions of alcohol and fatty acid moieties point to an origin from zooplankton. The position of the ketogroup in the mid-chain ketones is determined from characteristic fragment ions. Major ketones are the C38(C18H37-CO-C19H39) and C40(C18H37-CO-C21H43).The sterol ethers have C8 and C9 ether moieties and C27, C28, and C29 steroid moieties. The origin and significance of the ketones and the sterol ethers is obscure.  相似文献

As part of a broader study on benthic-pelagic coupling in the southern North Sea, specimens of the common heart urchin Echinocardium cordatum were sampled for analyses on phytopigments and fatty acids in their guts. Results were interpreted in the context of feeding and ecological functioning of the heart urchins in the benthic system. Ingestion selection factors for both component groups were relatively high, 5 to 9 for chlorophyll a and 9 to 130 for total fatty acids. The data point to at least partially different sources of the pigments and of the fatty acids. Next to algal detritus, small infauna relatively rich in fatty acids might be preferentially co-ingested with the detritus. Due to digestive breakdown and absorption, the concentrations of pigments and fatty acids were importantly decreased, indicating a rather high digestion efficiency for this subsurface deposit feeder, up to 80%. The results indicate that E. cordatum increases its energy acquisition by strong selectivity and a high digestive efficiency. Optimal foraging is likely to apply on deposit-feeding invertebrates in relatively food-rich coastal environments as much as it does in the food-poor deep-sea environment. Using chlorophyll a as a proxy for carbon, the contribution of the urchin population to the momentary benthic carbon budget was calculated at 7% to 42%.  相似文献

The short-term effects of the commercial PBDE flame retardant mixtures Penta-BDE and Octa-BDE on the expression of cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A), vitellogenin (Vtg) and zona radiata proteins (Zrp) were investigated in juvenile salmon (Salmo salar). For this purpose, groups of fish were dosed twice (oral intake at days 1 and 4) with 10 and 50 mg/kg body weight of both commercial mixtures. The fishes were sacrificed at day 7 (n=5 for each group) and 14 (n=6 for each group), and blood, liver, fillet, and brain were collected. Blanks and positive controls were also part of the experiment. The expressions of Vtg, Zrp, and CYP1A were measured with several techniques (EROD, ELISA, Western, Northern and Slot Blot). The values in the groups of fish treated with Penta-BDE or Octa-BDE did not significantly differ from the reference group for any of the parameters tested. In contrast, the positive control groups treated with estradiol-17β for Vtg and Zrp expression, and β-naphthoflavone for CYP1A expression did show a significant response, indicating the potential sensitivity of the fishes for the parameters measured. Since the results of the chemical analyses showed concentrations of a number of PBDE congeners in liver, fillet, and brain that were about three orders of magnitude above those of fish from the North Sea, it is concluded that the short-term toxicity of both commercial PBDE mixtures for these endpoints was low.  相似文献

The transition zone separating estuarine environments from the coastal ocean is characterized not only by distinctive morphological and sedimentary trends but by unique hydrodynamic forces as well. Lower Chesapeake Bay, a large coastal estuary within the Mid-Atlantic Bight of the U.S. East Coast, experiences complex wave and current-induced forces produced during winter storms. Wave and current measurements made near Thimble Shoal Light over five winter seasons show that most storms simultaneously produce both ocean and bay-generated wave trains that appear as distinct bimodal peaks in directional spectra. Analysis of selected storm wave records reveal that lower-frequency ocean waves, although nominally lower in amplitude than higher-frequency bay waves, are roughly equivalent to bay waves in terms of energy expended on beds of fine- to medium-grained sand at either end of the Thimble Shoal Channel. Grain-friction energy dissipation estimates calculated for waves and currents suggest that waves provide more net energy capable of transporting bottom sediment than currents, although strong barotropic flows briefly encountered during a major storm on 13–14 March 1993, exceeded wave energy expended at the bed by almost an order of magnitude. From analyses of wave orbital velocity spectra, it is shown that dual wave trains characterized by differences in peak frequency and direction may assist each other through interactions that increase their combined contribution to frictional energy dissipation and inferred sediment transport at the bed.  相似文献
