The 2002–03 Mt Etna flank eruption began on 26 October 2002 and finished on 28 January 2003, after three months of continuous explosive activity and discontinuous lava flow output. The eruption involved the opening of eruptive fissures on the NE and S flanks of the volcano, with lava flow output and fire fountaining until 5 November. After this date, the eruption continued exclusively on the S flank, with continuous explosive activity and lava flows active between 13 November and 28 January 2003. Multi-disciplinary data collected during the eruption (petrology, analyses of ash components, gas geochemistry, field surveys, thermal mapping and structural surveys) allowed us to analyse the dynamics of the eruption. The eruption was triggered either by (i) accumulation and eventual ascent of magma from depth or (ii) depressurisation of the edifice due to spreading of the eastern flank of the volcano. The extraordinary explosivity makes the 2002–03 eruption a unique event in the last 300 years, comparable only with La Montagnola 1763 and the 2001 Lower Vents eruptions. A notable feature of the eruption was also the simultaneous effusion of lavas with different composition and emplacement features. Magma erupted from the NE fissure represented the partially degassed magma fraction normally residing within the central conduits and the shallow plumbing system. The magma that erupted from the S fissure was the relatively undegassed, volatile-rich, buoyant fraction which drained the deep feeding system, bypassing the central conduits. This is typical of most Etnean eccentric eruptions. We believe that there is a high probability that Mount Etna has entered a new eruptive phase, with magma being supplied to a deep reservoir independent from the central conduit, that could periodically produce sufficient overpressure to propagate a dyke to the surface and generate further flank eruptions.Editorial responsibility: J. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and High Resolution TEM (HRTEM) investigations were used to study a complex micro-structure of twin-related lamellae of 15R SiC polytype, in syntactic coalescence with 6H-SiC. The analysis of the local stacking microstructure by means of HRTEM revealed that the perfect structure of 15R polytype, (23)3 was locally interrupted by numerous adjoining stacking faults parallel to (0001) with stacking of the coupled (22) and (33) bilayers superimposed on the twin boundaries. HR images taken exactly across both the twin boundaries showed a zig-zag pattern (23) that switched to (32) by a twin coherent interfaces or, alternatively, a zig-zag pattern (32) which passed to (23) through an isolated (33), 6H like sequence. The selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns taken exactly above both the twin interfaces indicate classifying of the twin found in this study as a “Friedelian” reticular merohedric twinning. However, two indistinguishable twin operations matched the observed features: a reflection through rational plane (0001), and 180°-rotation around [0001]. Since individual Si and C atoms and even the SiC bilayer polarity could not be established from these HR images, the real twin law was deduced by taking into account that the coherent structural match at the interface could be guaranteed only by a 180°-rotation around [0001]. In order to explain the origin of the planar defects found in this sample, the growth mechanism and the influence of the low-energy stacking faults were considered.  相似文献

In-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments were conducted using the SPEED-1500 multi-anvil press of SPring-8 on stishovite SiO2 and pressure-volume-temperature data were collected at up to 22.5 GPa and 1,073 K, which corresponds to the pressure conditions of the base of the mantle transition zone. The analysis of room-temperature data yielded V0=46.56(1) Å3, KT 0=296(5) GPa and K T =4.2(4), and these properties were consistent with the subsequent thermal equation of state (EOS) analyses. A fit of the present data to high-temperature Birch-Murnaghan EOS yielded (KT /T) P =–0.046(5) GPa K–1 and = a + bT with values of a =1.26(11)×10–5 K–1 and b =1.29(17)×10–8 K–2. A fit to the thermal pressure EOS gives 0=1.62(9)×10–5 K–1, ( K T / T) V =–0.027(4) GPa K–1 and (2P /T 2) V =27(5)×10–7 GPa K–2. The lattice dynamical approach by Mie-Grüneisen-Debye EOS yielded 0=1.33(6), q =6.1(8) and 0=1160(120) K. The strong volume dependence of the thermal pressure of stishovite was revealed by the analysis of present data, which was not detectable by the previous high-temperature data at lower pressures, and this yields ( K T / T) V 0 and q 1. The analyses for the fictive volume for a and c axes show that relative stiffness of c axis to a axis is similar both on compression and thermal expansion. Present EOS enables the accurate estimate of density of SiO2 in the deep mantle conditions.  相似文献

We present new results about the phase difference between the intensity and velocity fluctuations of the solar photosphere obtained with the Velocity And Magnetic Observations of the Sun (VAMOS) instrument, which uses the magneto-optical filter (MOF) technique. Before this observing run, we applied the calibration method described in Magrì, Oliviero, and Severino (Solar Phys. 232, 159, 2005) to reduce the instrumental cross-talk which was present in previous VAMOS data. The quality of this calibration, which can be easily applied to any MOF-based instrument, has been confirmed by comparing with the MOF transmission-profile measurements obtained with a diode laser system. Finally, we discuss the new VAMOS phase-difference value in relation to data obtained by other authors in the same potassium spectral line and in other lines that can be used to study nonadiabatic effects of solar global oscillations.  相似文献

As an aid to survey design, we used data acquired from three European continuous GPS networks to test the precision of position estimates from static observations as a function of the length of the observing session and the number and distribution of reference stations. Our criterion was the weighted RMS of estimates over 31 days with respect to coordinates determined from 24-h sessions over a 2-year period. With a single reference station, a precision of 3 mm horizontal and 10 mm vertical could be achieved reliably only for session lengths of 3 h or longer and baselines less than 200 km. If four or more reference stations are used, these levels of precision were usually achieved with sessions as short as 2 h. With sessions 6 h or longer and four or more reference stations, the precision is typically 1–2 mm in horizontal and about 3–5 mm in vertical. Increasing the number of reference stations further provides only marginal improvement. Although there is some variation in precision in 4-station networks with the choice of reference stations, the dependence on distance and geometric distribution is weak.  相似文献

We present some preliminary results based on the CoRoT observations of the young distant cluster Dolidze 25. The light curve for the 28 stars observed by the satellite have been analyzed and the relevant periodogram presented. As a result we have found two binary, three Pulsating Be, three SPB, two Spotted and one ellipsoidal variables. Noteworthy, we have also identified one PMS δ Scuti candidate.  相似文献

Samples of macrobenthic organisms were obtained at seven stations on a presumed pollution gradient from the head of Vancouver Harbour through to outer Howe Sound. Polychaetes (83 apparent species) and molluscs (43 apparent species) were the most abundant faunal groups numerically (44.8 and 47.9%, respectively). Molluscs accounted for most of the biomass (87.9%). The following univariate and multivariate methods were used to investigate structural changes in the benthic communities: ANOVA, Abundance-Biomass Comparisons and related statistics, cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling, and the BIOENV procedure. Most of the analyses divided the seven stations into three groups: Port Moody Arm (Inner Harbour): two stations; Inner and Outer Harbour: four stations, and Gibsons (Howe Sound): one station. Further cause-effect investigations are needed to determine the sensitivity to organic pollution of indicator species identified in the survey. However our data correlating benthic community changes to sediment chemistry suggest the inner harbour was dominated by pollution-tolerant species. Depth and sediment grain size were confounding factors for the interpretations.  相似文献

Macrofaunal burrows increase the surface area of the sediment-water interface, which has a great impact on the metabolism of aerobic microbes and the oscillation of reduced metabolites within the sediment. Given the importance of macrofauna in surficial sediments, the aim of this study is to examine the effects of burrow architectures on dissolved oxygen diffusion rates in comparison with unburrowed sediment, and thereby to evaluate the theoretical assumption used for modeling solute distribution in the burrow system using field samples. Employing microsensors, horizontal oxygen profiles were measured on a micrometer scale around burrows of seven invertebrates in tidal flats of the west coast of Korea. Oxygen diffusion distance through the burrow walls of seven invertebrates showed spatio-temporal variation with a range of 0.6 to 2.9 mm. Two groups of burrows were identified based on their oxygen diffusive properties relative to unburrowed sediments: 1) oxygen penetration similar to that of ambient sediments and 2) clearly enhanced oxygen penetration. Differences in the diffusive properties of the burrow wall were related to the burrow depth and diameter, existence of mucus lining on the wall, sediment grain size, and tidal phases. Also inhabitant activity was an important factor affecting oxygen penetration, which is discussed in the paper. These results further demonstrate that simplified assumptions (i.e. burrow structures are viewed as direct biogeochemical extensions of the sediment-water interface) may not be exact representation of the nature.  相似文献
