We consider to what extent the long-term dynamics of cyclic solar activity in the form of Grand Minima can be associated with random fluctuations of the parameters governing the solar dynamo. We consider fluctuations of the alpha coefficient in the conventional Parker migratory dynamo, and also in slightly more sophisticated dynamo models, and demonstrate that they can mimic the gross features of the phenomenon of the occurrence of Grand Minima over suitable parameter ranges. The temporal distribution of these Grand Minima appears chaotic, with a more or less exponential waiting time distribution, typical of Poisson processes. In contrast, however, the available reconstruction of Grand Minima statistics based on cosmogenic isotope data demonstrates substantial deviations from this exponential law. We were unable to reproduce the non-Poissonic tail of the waiting time distribution either in the framework of a simple alpha-quenched Parker model or in its straightforward generalization, nor in simple models with feedback on the differential rotation. We suggest that the disagreement may only be apparent and is plausibly related to the limited observational data, and that the observations and results of numerical modeling can be consistent and represent physically similar dynamo regimes.  相似文献

We investigated the independent and interactive effects of nutrient loading and summer water temperature on phytoplankton, drift macroalgae, and eelgrass (Zostera marina) in a coastal lagoon mesocosm experiment conducted from May through August 1999. Temperature treatments consisted of controls that approximated the 9-yr mean daily temperatures for Ninigret and Point Judith Lagoons in Rhode Island (United States) and treatments approximately 4°C above and 4°C below the controls. Nutrient treatments consisted of the addition of 6 mmol N m−2d−1 and 0.5 mmol P m−2 d−1 to mesocosms 4°C above and 4°C below the 9-yr daily mean. Nutrient enrichment produced marked phytoplankton blooms in both cool and warm treatments during early summer. These were replaced after midsummer by dramatic growths of macroalgal mats ofEnteromorpha flexuosa and, to a lesser degree,Cladophora sericea. No phytoplankton blooms were observed in the cool unenriched treatments, but blooms did develop in the mean temperature and warm mesocosms during the second half of the summer that were similar in intensity, though of shorter duration, than those observed earlier in the enriched systems. Macroalgal blooms did not occur in the unenriched mesocosms. Sustained warm water temperatures markedly decreased eelgrass density and belowground production and increased the time interval between the initiation of new leaves, particuarly when the biomass of macroalgae was high. The negative effect of elevated water temperature on eelgrass was significantly increased under conditions of elevated inorganic nutrient input. By the end of summer, virtually all of the measures of eelgrass health declined in rank order from cool, to mean, to cool enriched, to warm, to warm enriched treatments. It is likely that the marked declines in eelgrass abundance observed during recent decades in the Northeast have resulted from an interaction of increasing nutrient enrichment combined with increasing summer water temperatures.  相似文献

First-order perturbation theory results for the changes in pulsation frequencies of a Cowling model star containing a magnetic field with both poloidal and toroidal components are presented. The Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality (ANZECC Guidelines) provide default national guideline values for a wide range of indicators of relevance to the protection of the ecological condition of natural waters. However, the ANZECC Guidelines also place a strong emphasis on the need to develop more locally relevant guidelines. Using a structured framework, this paper explores indicators and regional data sets that can be used to develop more locally relevant guidelines for the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (GBRWHA). The paper focuses on the water quality impacts of adjacent catchments on the GBRWHA with the key stressors addressed being nutrients, sediments and agricultural chemicals. Indicators relevant to these stressors are discussed including both physico-chemical pressure indicators and biological condition indicators. Where adequate data sets are available, guideline values are proposed. Generally, data were much more readily available for physico-chemical pressure indicators than for biological condition indicators. Specifically, guideline values are proposed for the major nutrients nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and for chlorophyll-a. More limited guidelines are proposed for sediment related indicators. For most agricultural chemicals, the ANZECC Guidelines are likely to remain the default of choice for some time but it is noted that there is data in the literature that could be used to develop more locally relevant guidelines.  相似文献

In a pilot classification of 282 10-km squares in Great Britain, data on physiography, climate and geology were extracted. Parallel classifications were run using these variables and also using spatial location. Two classification methods were compared: minimum within-group variance and indicator species analysis. Similarities between the resulting classifications were considered, and the groups were assessed for geographic coherence. Their validity for use as stratifications were tested using analysis of variance and also by matching the classifications with known distributions of a number of bird and plant species.Classifications using spatial variables were geographically more coherent than those without. The different methods resulted in different groupings of the squares which were partly a result of the differences in weightings applied to the four types of variable. However, the analysis of variance showed that either classification method provided a good stratification of the country, in particular with respect to altitude and rainfall. Some bird and plant species distributions correlated well with the classifications, but others did not, dependent on the factors limiting those distributions.  相似文献

Analytical studies on the inelastic behaviour of concentrically braced steel frames for low-rise buildings are described in this paper. The bracing members which provide energy dissipation were used to provide information on the ductility levels that are likely to occur under differing levels of earthquake excitation. An indication of the relative performance of cross bracing is provided in terms of suitable SM values for use in the seismic provisions of New Zealand loadings code NZS 4203.  相似文献

The CORINE Programme was established by the European Commission to create a harmonized geographical information system on the state of the environment in the European Community. The ‘biotopes’ inventory of sites of major importance for nature conservation was a priority topic. At the time of writing, 6144 sites have been described, covering 12.2 per cent of the EC land surface area. The database records the presence of over 30000 habitat units and contains species data for 83 per cent of the sites. It has been used to guide environmental policy in the EC including the planning of the Habitats Directive, the most comprehensive piece of environmental legislation yet adopted by the Community, and is serving as an important tool in its implementation. Future development will follow the transformation of CORINE into an operational system within the European Environment Agency. The scope of the Biotopes database is currently being extended to include countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and members of EFTA.  相似文献
