The Boulder 1 breccias are similar in composition to other Taurus-Littrow massif samples and therefore probably derived from the same source, undoubtedly the Serenitatis basin. However, they are substantially different in texture from other Apollo 17 massif rocks, indeed are very nearly unique among the rocks returned by all Apollo missions. The boulder is set apart by its content of dark, rounded inclusions or bombs, up to several tens of centimeters in dimension, consisting largely of very fine, angular, mineral debris, welded together by a lesser amount of extremely fine-grained material that appears to be devitrified glass. To account for these uncommon structures, a phase of the basinforming impact event is sought that would produce relatively small amounts of debris and deposit them on or near the basin rim. It is suggested that the components of the boulder might represent very early, high angle ejecta from the Serenitatis event, and that the dark breccia inclusions are accretional structures formed from a cloud of hot mineral debris, melt droplets, and vapor that was ejected at high angles from the impact point soon after penetration of the Serenitatis meteoroid. This small amount of early high-angle ejecta would have remained in ballistic trajectories while the main phase of crater excavation deposited much larger amounts of deeper-derived debris and melt-rock on the rim of the basin, after which the early ejecta was deposited as a cooler (~450°C) stratum on top. The matrix of this breccia gained its modest degree of coherency by thermal sintering as the capping stratum cooled. The boulder is a fragment of this layer, broken out and rolled to the foot of the South Massif ? 55 m.y. ago.  相似文献

Nonlinear equilibrium solutions for two-dimensional magnetic arcades (/z = 0) using a Grad-Shafranov equation in which the axial magnetic field and the pressure are specified as functions of the component of the vector potential in the z direction are re-examined.To compute nonlinear solutions one is restricted to seeking solutions on finite computational domains with specified boundary conditions. We consider two basic models which have appeared in the literature. In one model the field is laterally restricted by means of Dirichlet boundary conditions and free to extend vertically by means of a Neumann condition at the top of the domain. For such fields, bifurcating solutions only appear for a narrow range of values for the parameter (the ratio of a typical length scale of the field to the gravitational scale height). Nevertheless, we show that the presence of this parameter is essential for bifurcating solutions in such domains. For the second model with Neumann conditions on three sides of the domain representing the region above the photosphere we do not find bifurcating solutions. Instead high-energy solutions with detached field lines evolve smoothly from low-energy solutions which have all field lines attached to the photosphere. Again the presence or absence of detached flux is dependent on the magnitude of for those fields which are evolved quasi-statically via an increase in the plasma pressure.  相似文献

The exchage equilibrium has been used to measure activity-composition relations along the olivine join FeSi0.5O2−MgSi0.5O2 at 1400 K and 1 atm pressure. Equilibrium Fe−Mg partitioning between the two phases was determined by reversing the compositions of olivine coexisting with oxide and matallic iron over the composition range Fo23 to Fo92. A detailed study of the thermodynamic properties of the oxide phase has recently been made by Srečec et al. and we have confirmed their results in the composition range of interest. Application of the oxide data to the exchange equilibrium enables the properties of olivine to be determined. Within experimental uncertainly (Fe, Mg)Si0.5O2 olivine can, at 1400 K, be treated as a symmetric solution with W Fe-Mg o1 of 3.7±0.8 kJ/mol. The data permit the presence of only very slight asymmetry in the series. The data do not support recent assertions that olivine is highly non-ideal (W≈10 kJ/mol) under these conditions.  相似文献

Waste disposal sites with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) frequently contain contaminants that are present in both the ground water and vadose zone. Vertical sampling is useful where transport of VOCs in the vadose zone may effect ground water and where steep vertical gradients in chemical concentrations are anticipated. Designs for combination ground water and gas sampling wells place the tubing inside the casing with the sample port penetrating the casing for sampling. This physically interferes with pump or sampler placement. This paper describes a well design that combines a ground water well with gas sampling ports by attaching the gas sampling tubing and ports to the exterior of the casing. Placement of the tubing on the exterior of the casing allows exact definition of gas port depth, reduces physical interference between the various monitoring equipment, and allows simultaneous remediation and monitoring in a single well. The usefulness and versatility of this design was demonstrated at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) with the installation of seven wells with 53 gas ports, in a geologic formation consisting of deep basalt with sedimentary interbeds at depths from 7.2 to 178 m below land surface. The INEEL combination well design is easy to construct, install, and operate.  相似文献

The energy components of sixteen Soil-Vegetation Atmospheric Transfer (SVAT) schemes were analyzed and intercompared using 10 years of surface meteorological and radiative forcing data from the Red-Arkansas River basin in the Southern Great Plains of the United States. Comparisons of simulated surface energy fluxes among models showed that the net radiation and surface temperature generally had the best agreement among the schemes. On an average (annual and monthly) basis, the estimated latent heat fluxes agreed (to within approximate estimation errors) with the latent heat fluxes derived from a radiosonde-based atmospheric budget method for slightly more than half of the schemes. The sensible heat fluxes had larger differences among the schemes than did the latent heat fluxes, and the model-simulated ground heat fluxes had large variations among the schemes. The spatial patterns of the model-computed net radiation and surface temperature were generally similar among the schemes, and appear reasonable and consistent with observations of related variables, such as surface air temperature. The spatial mean patterns of latent and sensible heat fluxes were less similar than for net radiation, and the spatial patterns of the ground heat flux vary greatly among the 16 schemes. Generally, there is less similarity among the models in the temporal (interannual) variability of surface fluxes and temperature than there is in the mean fields, even for schemes with similar mean fields.  相似文献
