  Time-of-flight laser-ionization mass spectrometry was applied to study the chemical composition of mineral particle surfaces in a sulphide-rich mine-tailings impoundment. This surface-sensitive technique provides chemical information from surfaces of irregularly shaped mineral particles (both conductive and insulators) less than 100 μm in diameter, which are considered to be representative of particle surface coatings in the tailings pile (after drying). In addition, depth profiles in the mineral particles were obtained. The combination of speed of analysis (1 min), small beam-diameter (2–4 μm), surface sensitivity (2–10 nm), trace-element sensitivity, and capability to analyze rough surfaces makes this method useful as a complement to studies of pore-water geochemistry and tailings mineralogy. As an example, the behavior of Pb and As in the Kidd Creek tailings dam near Timmins, Ontario, Canada, was studied, using a combination of surface analyses, and pore-water geochemical data. Spatial variations in sand sea geochemistry relate to mixing of different sediment sources and to variations in weathering. Due to problems of accessibility, adequate spatial coverage cannot be achieved using field surveys alone. However, maps of geochemical composition produced from remotely sensed data can be calibrated against limited field data and the results extrapolated over large, inaccessible areas. This technique is applied to part of the Rub' Al Khali in the northern United Arab Emirates. Trend surface analysis of the results suggests that the sand sea at this location can be modelled as an east–west mixing zone of two spectral components: terrestrial reddened quartz sands and marine carbonate sands. Optical dating of these sediments suggests that dune emplacement occurred rapidly around 10 ka BP , when sea level was rising rapidly. The spatial distribution of mineralogical components suggests that this phase of dune emplacement resulted from coastal dune sands being driven inland during marine transgression, thereby becoming mixed with rubified terrestrial sands. Research relating to soil leaching properties under turfgrass conditions has often been conducted on disturbed soils where macropore structure has been destroyed. The objective of this study was to compare the solute movement characteristics of undisturbed and disturbed soil columns covered with turfgrass. Dispersivities and chloride (Cl) breakthrough curves of undisturbed and disturbed soils were investigated. Soil columns were excavated into three sections after testing, for which the mean bulk density was 1.33 Mg M−3 for the undisturbed columns and 1.16 Mg m−3 for the disturbed columns. The dispersivity for the undisturbed columns was over three times greater than for the disturbed columns. Chloride concentration found in Layer 1 (0–6.7 cm), Layer 2 (6.7–13.4 cm), and Layer 3 (13.4–20.0 cm) were 2.8, 5.3, and 4.8 times higher, respectively, for the disturbed soils than for the undisturbed. Applying conclusions from solute movement studies using repacked columns covered with turfgrass to actual undisturbed field conditions could lead to errors in interpretation because of the effect of macropores.  相似文献

The GALO system for basin modeling is applied for numerical reconstruction of the thermal history of the lithosphere of the Western Basin and the Shatsky and Andrusov rises in the Black Sea. The modeling showed that the variant of the thermal evolution of the lithosphere of the region that was used by us for the Eastern Basin in our previous study is also applicable to the thermal evolution of the lithosphere of various tectonically different structures of the deep-water part of the Black Sea. These structures include both the Western and Eastern basins of the sea characterized by a granite-free crust formed in the course of the back-arc spreading and the Shatsky and Andrusov rises with the continental type of crust. The proposed version of the lithosphere evolution in the deep-water part of the Black Sea implies the initial stage of quasi-rift heating in the Upper Cretaceous and the three-staged thermal activation of the plate in the Cenozoic accompanied by three successive stages of crustal thinning. The latter resulted in the gradual deepening of the sea down to the present-day depth of 2.2 km.  相似文献

In most of the studies devoted to the analysis of the thermal regime of the Black Sea basins, the high sedimentation rate is regarded to be the principal reason for the low values of the surface heat flow as compared to the deep flow. We used the basin modeling technique for a more detailed assessment of this issue with regard to the new geological and geophysical data on the age and structure of the sedimentary cover and basement of the Black Sea basins. The use of enhanced seismic data, together with a more accurate estimation of the age limits of the sedimentary sequences in the region, allowed us to refine the results of the previous studies. Based on the calculations performed for an actual cross section with actual properties of the sedimentary rocks under compaction and the basement rocks, it is shown that any version of the sedimentation and evolution of the basin compatible with the geological and geophysical data available lead to heat flow values that are significantly greater than those actually observed. Our analysis proves that the sedimentation alone, as was implied in the previous studies, cannot explain the decrease in the deep heat flow at the floor surface down to values of about 34 mW/m2. It is shown that the temperature influence of the invasion of dense though heated waters of the Mediterranean Sea that occurred about 7000 years ago helps one to explain the low present-day heat flow values in the deep-water parts of the Western and Eastern basins of the Black Sea. The application of the basin modeling technique allowed us to pose a version of the thermal evolution of the lithosphere in the Western basin of the Black Sea compatible with the high heat flow at the end of the Cretaceous, with three stages of subsidence of the sea floor down to its present-day depths, and with the low heat flow values measured in the basin. According to the geophysical data, this version implies a relatively high-temperature present-day thermal regime in the basin’s lithosphere with a lithosphere thickness of about 60 km.  相似文献

The methodology and the first results of the computations of the volumes, masses, and growth rates of the sedimentary body of the buried Black Sea basin are presented. Their temporal evolution reflects the regional paleogeodynamics, in particular, the reorientation of the vector of the relative movement of the Arabian and Eurasian lithospheric plates and the related intensification of their collision in the late Miocene-Pliocene.  相似文献
