The seismic responses of steel buildings with perimeter moment resisting frames (MRF) with welded connections (WC) are estimated and compared to those of similar buildings with semi-rigid post-tensioned connections (PC). The responses are estimated in terms of ductility reduction factors (R µ,), ductility demands (µ G ) and force reduction factors (R). Two steel model buildings, which were modeled as complex-3D-MDOF systems, were used in the study. Results indicate that the reduction magnitude of global response parameters is larger than that of local response parameters, contradicting the same reduction implicitly assumed in the static equivalent lateral force procedure, implying that non-conservative design may result. The value of 8 for R, suggested in many codes for ductile steel MRF, and the value of 1 suggested in the well known Newmark and Hall procedure for the ratio of R to µ G , cannot be justified. The reason for this is that SDOF systems were used to model actual structures, where higher mode effects, energy dissipation and structural overstrength weren’t explicitly considered. The codes should be more transparent regarding the magnitude and the components involved in the force reduction factors. The seismic performance of steel buildings with PC may be superior to that of the buildings with WC, since their force reduction factors are larger and their ductility demands smaller, implying that PC buildings could be designed for smaller lateral seismic forces. The conclusions of this paper are for the particular structural systems and models considered. Much more research is needed to reach more general conclusions. 相似文献

Patagonia, including the island of Tierra del Fuego, lies in southernmost South America at the junction of the South American,
Antarctic, and Scotia tectonic plates. Historical and instrumental records have documented several local earthquakes of damaging
magnitude, posing a threat to the rapidly growing population of 300,000 and the expanding industrial and service infrastructure.
Short and inaccurate instrumental records of local seismic events and a diffuse epicenter distribution not clearly related
to the recognized seismogenic structures have hindered an adequate evaluation of the seismic hazard for this region. To improve
this situation, a paleoseismological study was carried out on two gravelly strandplains on the Atlantic coast of Patagonia.
Surveying combined ground-probing radar, vertical electric sounding, and seismic refraction. Coseismic normal faults buried
beneath the strandplain bodies were revealed and related to the morphology of the strandplains. The faults have probable ages
between 0.9 and 6.4 kyr BP and a recurrence rate of about 1 kyr. The more likely source for these structures is the Magallanes-Fagnano
fault, a continental transform fault that crosses Tierra del Fuego. The distance of more than 300 km from the buried coseismic
structures to the trace of the Magallanes-Fagnano fault argues for high-magnitude earthquake activity on this fault throughout
the Holocene. Urban development on soft glacial and alluvial substrates increases the hazard. 相似文献

Revillagigedo Archipelago and Clipperton atoll are oceanic islands located in the eastern tropical Pacific. The composition and trophic structure of their fish assemblages have never been characterized in detail, and the aim of this study was therefore to analyse the community structure and assess the similarity of fish assemblages between these two areas. Underwater visual fish censuses were conducted using band transects at two depth levels in three islands of the Revillagigedo Archipelago (Socorro, San Benedicto, and Roca Partida) and at Clipperton atoll. We calculated ecological indices (density, richness, Shannon diversity, Pielou evenness, and taxonomic distinctiveness) for each transect. These were compared in order to determine quantitative differences among the islands and bathymetric levels. Qualitative analyses (ANOSIM, nMDS, and SIMPER) were also performed. Finally, we analysed the trophic structure of the assemblages and the functional diversity of the four studied sites. The results showed significant differences for all indices, except diversity (H′). Roca Partida was the site with greatest abundance and richness due to the presence of pelagic species in large numbers. No significant differences were found in functional diversity, suggesting a high degree of ecological redundancy. Lower‐level carnivores with mean trophic level values of between 3.3 and 3.8 dominated both areas. The ordination analysis did not show a clear difference in fish composition among the islands, although Clipperton atoll has a particular fauna characterized by endemic species (Thalassoma robertsoni and Stegastes baldwini). In conclusion, the fish communities of the studied areas seem quite similar, but their assemblage structure differs. The San Pedro River (SPR) is located in northern Sonora (Mexico) and southeastern Arizona (USA). SPR is a transboundary river
that develops along the Sonora (Mexico) and Arizona (USA) border, and is considered the main source of water for a variety
of users (human settlements, agriculture, livestock, and industry). The SPR originates in the historic Cananea mining area,
which hosts some of the most important copper mineralizations in Mexico. Acid mine drainage derived from mine tailings is
currently reaching a tributary of the SPR near Cananea City, resulting in the contamination of the SPR with heavy metals and
sulfates in water and sediments. This study documents the accumulation and distribution of heavy metals in surface water along
a segment of the SPR from 1993 to 2005. Total concentrations of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn in surface waters are above maximum
permissible levels in sampling sites near mine tailing deposits. Nevertheless, a significant decrease in the Fe and SO4
2− in surface water (SO4
2−: 7,180–460.39 mg/L; Fe: 1,600–9.51 mg/L) as well as a gradual decrease in the heavy and transition metal content were observed
during the period from 1994 to 2005. Approximately 2.3 km downstream of the mine tailings, the heavy metal content of the
water drops quickly following an increase in pH values due to the discharging of wastewater into the river. The attenuation
of the heavy metal content in surface waters is related to stream sediment precipitation (accompanied by metal coprecipitation
and sorption) and water dilution. Determining the heavy metal concentration led to the conclusion that the Cananea mining
area and the San Pedro River are ecosystems that are impacted by the mining industry and by untreated wastewater discharges
arising from the city of Cananea (Sonora, Mexico). 相似文献

Despite of the impressive cultural heritage and abundant archaeological sites, absolute geomagnetic intensity data from Mesoamerica are still sparse. Archeointensity determinations using the Coe variant of the Thellier and Thellier method have been carried out on some selected pottery fragments from the El Opeño archeological site which has the earliest funeral architecture known in western Mesoamerica. The El Opeño chronology is supported by six C14 datings performed on carbon-bearing materials. Detailed rock magnetic experiments including susceptibility vs. temperature curves, hysteresis cycles and thermal demagnetization procedures were carried out in order to estimate the magnetic carriers and their stability. Cooling rate and anisotropy remanence corrected intensity values range from 25.0 ± 2.3 to 40.2 ± 3.0 μT and corresponding virtual axial dipole moments (VADM) range from 5.6 ± 0.5 to 8.9 ± 0.7 × 1022 Am2. In addition, we present here a new compilation and analysis of existing absolute intensity data in order to try to estimate the variation of the Earth’s magnetic field over the past three millennia. The mean archeointensity obtained in the present study agrees reasonably well with the predicted absolute intensities retrieved from the CALS7K main field model. Other available Mesoamerican data, however, differ from this model. Most of available archeointensity data from Mesoamerica agree reasonably well with the ARCH3K main field model prediction. The broad peak defined at about 50 A.D. by our data is also predicted by the CALS3k.3 main field model but slightly displaced to the right while two smaller peaks are observed on the ARCH3K curve for the same time interval. The intensity value obtained at about 200 B.C. is a clear outlier and thus its geomagnetic significance should be confirmed by further investigations. 相似文献
