To explore the freezing effect on iron (Fe) solubility in natural environments, especially in Polar regions, event based freshly fallen snow samples were collected at Newark, New Jersey on the US East Coast for two consecutive winter seasons (2014–2015 and 2015–2016). These samples were analyzed for the concentrations of soluble iron (Fesol) using UV-Vis Spectroscopy and filterable iron (Fefil) and total iron (Fetot) using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The average fractional solubility of the Fesol (the portion that passes through a 0.22 μm pore-size filter) with respect to the total Fe in the samples was 23.3?±?12.2%, with the majority of the soluble Fe being present as Fe(III). Approximately 48.5% of the total Fe existed as Fefil (the portion that passes through 0.45 μm pore size filter media). No significant correlation was found between the soluble ionic species and soluble Fe. Six snow events were kept frozen for 10 days, and analyzed in periodic intervals to study the post-freezing modification in Fe solubility. Events 1 and 2 showed increasing trend in the soluble Fe concentrations; however, the events 5, 6, 7, and 8 showed no noticeable increments. The pattern shown in Events 1 and 2 is associated with high fraction of Fefil and one unit pH drop, suggesting that the freeze-induced modification in Fe solubility could be linked with the amount of Fefil and the acidity change in the samples. To further investigate the freeze-induced compaction of particles, samples from three events 6, 7, and 10 were analyzed by SEM-STEM-EDS microscopy, and the results showed that due to freezing, in general, the particles in the ice-melt counterparts tend to compact and cluster and form larger aggregates compared to the particles in snow-melt. These results show, despite the freeze-induced compaction in snow was observed from STEM images, the snow freezing might not have significant effect in increasing Fe solubility from materials in the snow. These results further suggest that freezing process with fresh snow in high-latitude regions may not impose significant modification on Fe solubility in snow.  相似文献

Nonlinear time series analysis methods are used to investigate the dynamics of mechanical and convective turbulences in the atmospheric surface layer flow. Using dynamical invariant analysis (e.g. correlation dimension, Lyapunov exponent and mutual information) along with recurrence quantification analysis (e.g. recurrent rate, determinism, average diagonal length of recurrence plot, etc.) of the vertical wind component data, it is confirmed that a convective turbulence is a lower order manifold in its phase space exhibiting higher degree of organization than a mechanical turbulence. Applying a quasi-one-dimensional chaotic return map technique, the topological differences between the mechanical and convective turbulences are explored. These quasi-one-dimensional return maps are produced using the local maxima of the first principal component of the reconstructed turbulence data. A comparison of the probability distribution of the local maxima of a forced Lorenz model with the turbulence data indicates the possible existence of a stable fixed point for both type of turbulences. Furthermore, dynamically the mechanical turbulence is found to resemble an unforced Lorenz model whereas the convective turbulence resembles a forced Lorenz model.  相似文献

The rocketsonde data obtained from the launchings made at Thumba (8°3215N, 76°5148E) during the winter period 1970–71, as already reported, have indicated that warmings of noticeable magnitude occurred at high levels (upper stratosphere and mesosphere) over this tropical station during the period mentioned. The mean monthly radiosonde temperatures of 50, 100 and 300 mb levels at Thumba (Trivandrum) and Delhi (28°35N, 77°12E) during the same period have also pointed out certain anomalies consistent with the warmings referred to above at Thumba. The radiosonde temperatures of the two stations, Thumba (Trivandrum) and Delhi, have now been examined, along with the values of total ozone, for the ten winter periods commencing from 1961–1962. The analysis has pointed out the possibility of high-level warmings also having occurred in the past over the Indian region during the winters of 1963–1964 and 1967–1968, which are also the periods when prominent warmings are definitely known to have occurred at higher latitudes. The behaviour of total ozone has been found to be different in the different years of the warmings. The features noticed have been presented and discussed.  相似文献

With the recent emergence of wavelet‐based procedures for stochastic analyses of linear and non‐linear structural systems subjected to earthquake ground motions, it has become necessary that seismic ground motion processes are characterized through statistical functionals of wavelet coefficients. While direct characterization in terms of earthquake and site parameters may have to wait for a few more years due to the complexity of the problem, this study attempts such characterization through commonly available Fourier and response spectra for design earthquake motions. Two approaches have been proposed for obtaining the spectrum‐compatible wavelet functionals, one for input Fourier spectrum and another for input response spectrum, such that the total number of input data points are 30–35% of those required for a time‐history analysis. The proposed methods provide for simulating ‘desired non‐stationary characteristics’ consistent with those in a recorded accelerogram. Numerical studies have been performed to illustrate the proposed approaches. Further, the wavelet functionals compatible with a USNRC spectrum in the case of 35 recorded motions of similar strong motion durations have been used to obtain the strength reduction factor spectra for elasto‐plastic oscillators and to show that about ±20% variation may be assumed from mean to 5 and 95% confidence levels due to uncertainty in the non‐stationary characteristics of the ground motion process. Summary In this paper, the waves propagated in an infinite medium has been considered by disturbances on the surface of a burried spherical source. The disturbances are produced by two types of forces viz. i) Transient normal force, ii) Transient twist applied on the surface of the source. The solutions are obtained in a very simple form. The first documented interpretation of the regional-scale hydrostratigraphy and groundwater flow is presented for a ~21,000-km2 area of the arsenic-affected districts of West Bengal [Murshidabad, Nadia, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas (including Calcutta)], India. A hydrostratigraphic model demonstrates the presence of a continuous, semi-confined sand aquifer underlain by a thick clay aquitard. The aquifer thickens toward the east and south. In the south, discontinuous clay layers locally divide the near-surface aquifer into several deeper, laterally connected, confined aquifers. Eight 22-layer model scenarios of regional groundwater flow were developed based on the observed topography, seasonal conditions, and inferred hydrostratigraphy. The models suggest the existence of seasonally variable, regional, north–south flow across the basin prior to the onset of extensive pumping in the 1970s. Pumping has severely distorted the flow pattern, inducing high vertical hydraulic gradients across wide cones of depression. Pumping has also increased total recharge (including irrigational return flow), inflow from rivers, and sea water intrusion. Consequently, downward flow of arsenic contaminated shallow groundwater appears to have resulted in contamination of previously safe aquifers by a combination of mechanical mixing and changes in chemical equilibrium.  相似文献

Fish distribution in relation to environmental variables was investigated in the Matla River of Sundarban estuarine system. A total of 64 brackish water species belonging to 38 families showing tropical and subtropical affinities were obtained upon monthly sampling of 1 year. The most abundant species were Harpadon nehereus, Gudusia chapra, Coilia neglecta, Coilia ramcarati and Liza parsia. Fish assemblages showed significant seasonal variation as was revealed from MANOVA. MDS ordination plot based on similarity in the fish assemblages revealed that premonsoonal season was distinguishable from the monsoonal and postmonsoonal seasons. Notable differences were also evident between monsoon and postmonsoon. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that salinity, acidity, inorganic phosphate concentration and dissolved oxygen were the most important environmental variables in determining the observed variation in fish assemblages. Seasonal succession of fish populations may be related to differences in life cycle and adaptation to prevalent ecological conditions. The study therefore suggests that environmental variations in terms of changing salinity and dissolved oxygen have significant influence in structuring estuarine piscine community in this region.  相似文献

Summary With the aid of the generalized function method, a study is made of the linearized theory of transient development of capillary-gravity waves in an inviscid, incompressible and homogeneous liquid of finite and infinite depth due to an arbitrary oscillating source situated at a finite depth below the undisturbed free surface of the liquid. The initial value problem is solved by using Laplace-Fourier transforms combined with asymptotic methods. The asymptotic solution is found to consist of the steady state and the transient components which are independently modified by surface tension. The latter decays more rapidly as timet due to the presence of surface tension than in the case where surface tension is neglected. It is predicted that the principal effect of surface tension is to increase both the phase and group velocity of the waves and make the energy more readily available among the rapidly travelling progressive surface waves. In addition to the effects of surface tension on the physical properties of the wave motions, our method of solution provides an interesting illustration of the applicability of generalized functions in water wave phenomena.  相似文献

Organic ligands, especially oxalate, play an important role in iron dissolution from iron-containing minerals. To study the effects of organic acid ligands on the dissolution of iron-containing minerals, the dissolution kinetics of hematite in the presence of oxalate, acetate, and formate were studied under ultraviolet radiation with varying ligand concentrations (10–3 mM). The results indicate that for adsorption dissolution, oxalate is the dominating ligand for producing soluble iron (III) from hematite; for photoreductive dissolution under ultraviolet radiation and in oxic conditions, the production of iron (II) is highly proportional to the concentrations of oxalate, whereas the effects of varying concentrations of formate and acetate are not significant. At low oxalate concentrations (10–500 µM), the photoreductive dissolution of iron (II) is substantially low, while at high oxalate concentrations (3 mM), oxalate is equally effective as formate and acetate for producing photoreduced iron (II) from hematite. Combining with field data from other works, it is likely that the ratios of oxalate to total iron need to be higher than a threshold range of ~1.2–5.5 in order for oxalate to effectively produce photoreduced iron (II) from hematite. This study demonstrates that the iron (II) yield from photoreduction of hematite is significantly lower when the hematite surface is pre-coated with organic ligands versus when it is exposed to ultraviolet radiation instantaneously.  相似文献
