The application of standard array processing techniques to the study of coda presents difficulties due to the design criteria of these techniques. Typically the techniques are designed to analyze isolated, short arrivals with definite phase velocity and azimuth and have been useful in the frequency range around 1 Hz. Coda is long in time and may contain waves of different types, phase velocities and azimuths. Nonetheless, it has proved possible to use or adapt array methods to answer two questions: what types of waves are present in coda and where are they scattered? Most work has been carried out on teleseismicP coda; work on local coda has lagged due to lack of suitable data and the difficulties of dealing with high frequencies. The time domain methods of beamforming and Vespagram analysis have shown that there is coherent energy with a high phase velocity comparable toP orPP in teleseismicP coda. These methods can detect this “coherent” coda because it has a fairly definite phase velocity and the same, or close to, azimuth as firstP orPP. This component must consist ofP waves and is either scattered near the source, or reflected in the mantle path as apdpP or precursorPP reflection. The Fourier transform method of the frequency-wavenumber spectrum has been adapted by integrating around circles of constant phase velocity (constant total wavenumber) to produce the wavenumber spectrum, which shows power as a function of wavenumber, or phase velocity. For teleseismicP coda, wavenumber spectra demonstrate that there is a “diffuse” coda of shear,Lg or surface waves scattered from teleseismicP near the receiver. Wavenumber spectra also suggest that the coherent coda is produced by near-source scattering in the crust, not mantle reflection, since it is absent or weak for deep-focus events. Crustal earthquakes have a very strong coherent component of teleseismic coda, suggesting scattering from shear to teleseismicP near the source. Three-component analysis of single-station data has shown the presence of off-azimuth arrivals and may lead to the identification of waves scattered from a single scatterer.  相似文献

Abstract— Sample preparation is always a critical step in the study of micrometer‐sized astromaterials available for study in the laboratory, whether their subsequent analysis is by electron microscopy or secondary ion mass spectrometry. A focused beam of gallium ions has been used to prepare electron transparent sections from an interplanetary dust particle (IDP), as part of an integrated analysis protocol to maximize the mineralogical, elemental, isotopic, and spectroscopic information extracted from one individual particle. In addition, focused ion beam (FIB) techniques have been employed to extract cometary residue preserved on the rims and walls of microcraters in 1100 series aluminum foils that were wrapped around the sample tray assembly on the Stardust cometary sample collector. Non‐ideal surface geometries and inconveniently located regions of interest required creative solutions. These include support pillar construction and relocation of a significant portion of sample to access a region of interest. Serial sectioning, in a manner similar to ultramicrotomy, is a significant development and further demonstrates the unique capabilities of focused ion beam microscopy for sample preparation of astromaterials.  相似文献

Monte Carlo simulation of space radiation effects induced by protons is important for design of space missions. Geant4 is a well established toolkit for Monte Carlo simulation focused on high energy physics applications. In this work, a set of new validation results versus data for Geant4 electromagnetic and hadronic interaction of protons is presented and discussed. While hotspots of alcohol-related incidents have been associated with alcohol outlet density, few studies have considered other environmental factors. We aimed to characterise the environment of hotspots outside of outlet density areas in Amsterdam. Using geographical information systems, we identified hotspots of alcohol-related health incidents outside of outlet density areas based on the registry of alcohol related ambulance attendances. While quantitative data and methods were used to analyse victim profiles (including age, sex and home address) and temporal profiles (time of incident), we combined quantitative and qualitative information to develop environmental profiles of these hotspots. We identified 11 hotspots with 242 incidents outside outlet density areas. Results indicate substantial differences between incidents in these hotspots and incidents in high outlet density areas. Victims in these hotspots are older, more often male and live closer to the incident location compared to victims in high outlet density hotspots. Incidents are less likely to take place during the night and at weekends. In-depth analysis of four hotspots showed different combinations of contributing environmental factors, including (a) public parks bordering deprived neighbourhoods, (b) dance event facilities close to a traffic black spot, and (c) residential services for disadvantaged groups near ‘hang-outs’. The study shows that hotspots of alcohol-related incidents can arise outside outlet density areas at locations where several other environmental factors cluster, particularly in more deprived areas. Such hotspots can be addressed in urban planning and urban design.  相似文献

Summary Two alternative methods are presented of determining the secular changes of the geoid in the Fennoscandian uplift region. Both are based on the Airy-Heiskanen hypothesis of isostatic compensation. The first alternative is the usual Stokes integration of changes of free-air anomalies in the given region. Another alternative was derived, which is based on calculating the gravitational potential of the surface uplift layer and of the same layer at the depth of compensation. The calculated changes of the shape of the geoid were then compared with the results of Bjerhammar's geophysical interpretation of the expansion of the Earth's gravity potential (regional depression of the geoid in the Fennoscandian uplift region). Regression analysis indicates a strong correlation between the two quantities (r=0.88). The time required to level this depression of the geoid is estimated. A relation was derived for improving the accuracy of the observed values of Fennoscandian uplifts, which takes into account the elastic reaction of the Earth's body to the change of gravitational potential and perturbations, caused by the secular decrease of the depth of the northern part of the Baltic Sea.

A new conglomerate test in palaeomagnetism   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The conglomerate test is widely used in palaeomagnetism to date components of natural remanent magnetization with respect to deposition of conglomerates. It has been demonstrated, however, that this test may be positive even if the data are strongly contaminated by a secondary remanence, especially for the commonly used small number of clasts Starkey & Palmer 1970). Here we show with the aid of numerical simulations that different statistical procedures employed in this test have similar low sensitivities to remagnetization. We suggest a new conglomerate test which incorporates additional information on the direction of a secondary palaeomagnetic component which is isolated from either clasts themselves or their host rocks. Numerical simulations show that this new test is about twice as sensitive to remagnetization as the previous procedures and is robust with respect to small errors in the direction of a secondary component.  相似文献

Summary One alternative of solving the problem of eliminating the effect of external masses, generating the constant part of the tidal field, from the perturbing potential is presented. The solution is founded on a new definition of the normal gravity field which contains this part of the tidal field. It is proved that two material circles in the plane of the Earth's equator, whose radii are approximately equal to the mean distances of the Moon and Sun from the Earth, can be considered as the source of this field. The new normal gravity field is first derived in the spherical approximation, which enables one to prove simply that the value of the normal gravity potential on the reference surface does not change, and that the change in the definition of the heights is insignificant. The normal gravity field for the equipotential ellipsoid is derived in the same way according to [1].
