For the first time, unmanned aerial system measurements collected by the small unmanned meteorological observer (SUMO) are used to evaluate atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) parameterization schemes embedded in the Advanced Weather Research and Forecasting model (AR-WRF). Observation sites were located in the vicinity of the almost idealized shaped mountain Hofsj?kull, Central Iceland. SUMO profiles provided temperature, relative humidity and wind data to maximum heights of 3?km above ground. Two cases are investigated, one with calm wind conditions and development of a convective ABL and one with moderate winds and gravity waves over Hofsj?kull. For the high-resolution simulation with AR-WRF, three two-way nested domains are chosen with a grid size of 9, 3 and 1?km. During its first meteorological test, SUMO has proved its great value for the investigation of the diurnal evolution of the ABL and the identification of mesoscale features residing above the ABL, such as subsidence. 相似文献

Observations by several instruments onboard the Cassini spacecraft revealed the existence of heavy hydrocarbon and nitrile species with masses of several thousand atomic mass units in the ionosphere of Titan. These very large molecules are in fact aerosols. The goal of this paper is to compute the concentrations of the charged aerosols in the upper atmosphere (950-1200 km) of Titan. The charging of these aerosols has been studied using the charge balance equations, where positive ions, negative ions, electrons, neutral and charged aerosols are included. Number concentrations of charged aerosols are compared with those observed by the Cassini instruments. The present work estimates the aerosol mass density as 1-10 kg/m3, which is within the predicted range. The results show that the aerosols must be smaller than 10 nm in order to have reasonable agreement with observations by the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer. 相似文献

Abstract– Northwest Africa (NWA) 5298 is an evolved basaltic shergottite that has bulk characteristics and mineral compositions consistent with derivation from an oxidized reservoir in Mars. Chemically zoned clinopyroxene (64.5%, augite and pigeonite), with interstitial lath‐shaped plagioclase (29.4%, An40 to An55), constitutes the bulk of this meteorite. The plagioclase has been converted by shock to both isotropic maskelynite and spherulitic, birefringent feldspar representing a quenched vesicular melt. The remainder of the rock consists of minor amounts of Fe‐Ti oxides (ilmenite and titanomagnetite), phosphates (merrillite and apatite), silica polymorph, fayalite, pyrrhotite, baddeleyite, and minor hot desert weathering products (calcite and barite). Oxygen fugacity derived from Fe‐Ti oxide thermobarometry is close to the quartz‐fayalite‐magnetite (QFM) buffer indicating that the late stage evolution of this magma occurred under more oxidizing condition than those recorded in most other shergottites. Merrillite contains the largest abundances of rare earth elements (REE) of all phases, thereby controlling the REE budget in NWA 5298. The calculated bulk rock REE pattern normalized to CI chondrite is relatively flat. The evolution of the normalized REE patterns of the bulk rock, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and phosphate in NWA 5298 is consistent with closed‐system chemical behavior with no evidence of crustal contamination or postcrystallization disturbance of the REE contents of these phases. 相似文献

This work is a first step in the analysis of uncertainty sources in the RCM-simulated climate over North America. Three main
sets of sensitivity studies were carried out: the first estimates the magnitude of internal variability, which is needed to
evaluate the significance of changes in the simulated climate induced by any model modification. The second is devoted to
the role of CRCM configuration as a source of uncertainty, in particular the sensitivity to nesting technique, domain size,
and driving reanalysis. The third study aims to assess the relative importance of the previously estimated sensitivities by
performing two additional sensitivity experiments: one, in which the reanalysis driving data is replaced by data generated
by the second generation Coupled Global Climate Model (CGCM2), and another, in which a different CRCM version is used. Results
show that the internal variability, triggered by differences in initial conditions, is much smaller than the sensitivity to
any other source. Results also show that levels of uncertainty originating from liberty of choices in the definition of configuration
parameters are comparable among themselves and are smaller than those due to the choice of CGCM or CRCM version used. These
results suggest that uncertainty originated by the CRCM configuration latitude (freedom of choice among domain sizes, nesting
techniques and reanalysis dataset), although important, does not seem to be a major obstacle to climate downscaling. Finally,
with the aim of evaluating the combined effect of the different uncertainties, the ensemble spread is estimated for a subset
of the analysed simulations. Results show that downscaled surface temperature is in general more uncertain in the northern

Annually resolved and replicated tree-ring stable isotope series have the potential to reconstruct growing season environmental parameters over multi-millennial timescales. As this archive may require only minimal statistical detrending, it has the potential to preserve a large portion of low frequency climate signals. To date, many studies have utilised only the latewood portion of the tree ring, in an attempt to minimize carry-over effects from previous year reserves and maximise the annual nature of the climate signal preserved. However, the old trees from tree-line locations, necessary to build long chronologies, often display narrow ring-widths (< 0.5 mm), making accurate earlywood–latewood separation difficult and particular time consuming. The resulting samples may also be too small for efficient cellulose purification or multiple isotopic determinations. As photosynthates from the current year are predominantly used in conifer ring formation at marginal sites with short growing seasons, latewood separation may not be especially advantageous in determining a useful climate signal and therefore unnecessary where resources are limited. To test this hypothesis, Scots pine from Northern Norway and European larch from the Swiss Alps are used. Both sites are tree-line locations where growth is predominantly temperature limited. Tree rings were cut and extracted to cellulose for both the earlywood and latewood of each annual growth ring and stable carbon isotope ratios were measured. Our results demonstrate a very high common carbon isotope signal between earlywood and latewood in both species (rlarch = 0.68 and rpine = 0.79), which also show high correlations with summer temperature over the investigated period (AD 1980–2004 for larch and AD 1929–1978 for pine). High turnover rates and small reserve pools at these tree-line locations may account for these high common signals. These results suggest that for European tree-line conifers, the separation of earlywood from latewood is unnecessary to resolve an annual isotopic signal and make a reliable climate calibration. Melt inclusions in ureilites occur only in the small augite- and orthopyroxene-bearing subgroups. Previously [Goodrich C.A., Fioretti A.M., Tribaudino M. and Molin G. (2001) Primary trapped melt inclusions in olivine in the olivine-augite-orthopyroxene ureilite Hughes 009. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta65, 621-652] we described melt inclusions in olivine in the olivine-augite-orthopyroxene ureilite Hughes 009 (Hughes). FRO 90054/93008 (FRO) is a near-twin of Hughes, and has abundant melt inclusions in all three primary silicates. We use these inclusions to reconstruct the major, minor and rare earth element composition of the Hughes/FRO parent magma and evaluate models for the petrogenesis of augite-bearing ureilites.Hughes and FRO consist of 23-47 vol % olivine (Fo 87.3 and 87.6, respectively), 7-52 vol % augite (mg 89.2, Wo 37.0 and mg 88.8, Wo 38.0, respectively), and 12-56 vol % orthopyroxene (mg 88.3, Wo 4.9 and mg 88.0, Wo 4.8, respectively). They have coarse-grained (?3 mm), highly-equilibrated textures, with poikilitic relationships indicating the crystallization sequence olivine → augite → orthopyroxene. FRO is more shocked than Hughes, experienced greater secondary reduction, and is more weathered. The two meteorites are probably derived from the same lithologic unit.Melt inclusions in olivine consist of glass ± daughter cpx ± metal-sulfide-phosphide spherules ± chromite, and have completely reequilibrated Fe/Mg with their hosts. We follow the method of Goodrich et al. (2001) for reconstructing the composition of the primary trapped liquid they represent (olPTL), but correct an error in our treatment of the effects of reequilibration. Inclusions in augite consist of glass, which shows only partial reequilibration of Fe/Mg. The composition of the primary trapped liquid they represent (augPTL) is reconstructed by reverse fractional crystallization of wall augite from the most ferroan glass. Inclusions in orthopyroxene consist of glass + 30-50 vol % daughter cpx. The cpx shows complete, but the glass only partial, reequilibration of Fe/Mg. A range of possible compositions for the primary trapped liquid they represent (opxPTL) is calculated by modal recombination of glass and cpx, followed by addition of wall orthopyroxene and adjustment of Fe/Mg for equilibrium with the primary orthopyroxene. Only a small subset of these compositions is plausible on the basis of being orthopyroxene-saturated.Results indicate that olPTL, assumed to represent the parent magma of these rocks, was saturated only with olivine and in equilibrium with Fo ∼ 83. AugPTL and opxPTL are very similar in composition; both are close to augite + orthopyroxene co-saturation and in equilibrium with Fo 87/8. We suggest that olPTL was reduced to Fo 87/8 due to smelting during ascent, and show that this produces a composition very similar to that of augPTL and opxPTL.REE data for each of the three primary silicates and the least evolved melt inclusions in olivine are used to calculate REE abundances in the Hughes/FRO parent magma. All four methods yield very similar results, indicating a REE pattern that is strongly LREE-depleted (Sm/La = 3.3-3.7), with a small negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 0.82) and slight HREE-depletion (Gd/Lu = 1.4-1.6).The Hughes/FRO parent magma provides a robust constraint on models for the petrogenesis of augite-bearing ureilites. Its major, minor and rare earth element composition suggests derivation through mixing and/or assimilation processes, rather than as a primary melt on the ureilite parent body. 相似文献

A multidisciplinary study was undertaken at the Qijurittuq Site (IbGk‐3) on Drayton Island in Low‐Arctic Quebec (Canada) to document the relationships between climatic, environmental, and cultural changes and the choice of Thule/Inuit dwelling style in the eastern Arctic. Several marine terraces were 14C‐dated with shells in order to reconstruct the area's uplift (glacioisostatic rebound) curve. Plant macrofossil analysis of peat was conducted to reconstruct past vegetation and, indirectly, past climate. Archaeological surveys and excavations characterized the structure of subterranean sod houses at the Qijurittuq Site and were supplemented with open interviews with Inuit elders for a better understanding of site location and the use of household space. The sites selected for habitation were well‐drained sandy marine terraces in a valley sheltered from prevailing winds. Sod houses were in turn made possible by the abundance of driftwood on the island and the presence of nearby peatland. Thule/Inuit people used semi‐subterranean houses rather than igloos at the Qijurittuq Site during the dry, cold conditions toward the end of the Little Ice Age. Stable environmental conditions and food supply during winter possibly explain the use of those semipermanent houses on Drayton Island. Based on Williams' work and rewritten in action angle variables, a method for the calculation of proper elements is here presented. The averaging over the long periodic terms is performed by the semi numerical method developed by Henrard (1990); no series expansion in eccentricity or inclination of the asteroid is used which allows calculating proper elements for highly inclined orbits. Conversely, the theory is truncated at the first degree in the eccentricity and the inclination of the perturbing planets. A few tests about accuracy and consistency are presented. 相似文献

Summary. Various methods have been applied to solve propagation problems in media composed of homogeneous layers, the boundaries of which have slight lateral variations. In this paper, volume sources, introduced in a previous paper to describe the effects of lateral irregularities, are replaced by an equivalent body force and by surface sources concentrated on the irregular boundaries. The surface sources we find are similar to those obtained by Kennett for a two-dimensional structure and we generalize his results to a three-dimensional structure and to the case when an external body force is present. 相似文献
