In boreal and nemoboreal forests, tree frost hardiness is modified in reaction to cues from day length and temperature. The dehardening processes in Norway spruce, Picea abies, could be estimated to start when the daily mean temperature is above 5 °C for 5 days. Bud burst will occur approximately after 120–170 degree-days above 5 °C, dependent on genetic differences among provenances. A reduced cold hardiness level during autumn and spring and an advanced onset of bud burst are expected impacts of projected future global warming. The aim of this study was to test if this will increase the risk for frost damage caused by temperature backlashes. This was tested for Sweden by comparing output from the Hadley Centre regional climate model, HadRM3H, for the period 1961–1990 with future IPCC scenario SRES A2 and B2 for 2070–2099. Different indices for calculating the susceptibility to frost damage were used to assess changes in frost damage risk. The indices were based on: (1) the start of dehardening; (2) the severity of the temperature backlash; (3) the timing of bud burst; and (4) the cold hardiness level. The start of dehardening and bud burst were calculated to occur earlier all over the country, which is in line with the overall warming in both climate change scenarios. The frequency of temperature backlashes that may cause frost damage was calculated to increase in the southern part, an effect that became gradually less pronounced towards the north. The different timing of the onset of dehardening mainly caused this systematic latitudinal pattern. In the south, it occurs early in the year when the seasonal temperature progression is slow and large temperature variations occur. In the north, dehardening will occur closer to the spring equinox when the temperature progression is faster.  相似文献

Generalized Jacobian coordinates can be used to decompose anN-body dynamical system intoN-1 2-body systems coupled by perturbations. Hierarchical stability is defined as the property of preserving the hierarchical arrangement of these 2-body subsystems in such a way that orbit crossing is avoided. ForN=3 hierarchical stability can be ensured for an arbitrary span of time depending on the integralz=c 2 h (angular momentum squared times energy): if it is smaller than a critical value, defined by theL 2 collinear equilibrium configuration, then the three possible hierarchical arrangements correspond to three disconnected subsets of the invariant manifold in the phase space (and in the configuration space as well; see Milani and Nobili, 1983a). The same definitions can be extended, with the Jacobian formalism, to an arbitrary hierarchical arrangement ofN≥4 bodies, and the main confinement condition, the Easton inequality, can also be extended but it no longer provides separate regions of trapped motion, whatever is the value ofz for the wholeN-body system,N≥4. However, thez criterion of hierarchical stability applies to every 3-body subsystem, whosez ‘integral’ will of course vary in time because of the perturbations from the other bodies. In theN=4 case we decompose the system into two 3-body subsystems whosec 2 h ‘integrals’,z 23 andz 34, att=0 are assumed to be smaller than the corresponding critical values \(\tilde z_{23} \) and \(\tilde z_{34} \) , so that both the subsystems are initially hierarchically stable. Then the hierarchical arrangement of the 4 bodies cannot be broken until eitherz 23 orz 34 is changed by an amount \(\tilde z_{ij} - z_{ij} \left( 0 \right)\) ; that is the whole system is hierarchically stable for a time spain not shorter than the minimum between \(\Delta t_{23} = {{\left( {\tilde z_{23} - z_{23} \left( 0 \right)} \right)} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\left( {\tilde z_{23} - z_{23} \left( 0 \right)} \right)} {\dot z_{23} }}} \right. \kern-0em} {\dot z_{23} }}\) and \(\Delta t_{34} = {{\left( {\tilde z_{34} - z_{34} \left( 0 \right)} \right)} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\left( {\tilde z_{34} - z_{34} \left( 0 \right)} \right)} {\dot z_{34} }}} \right. \kern-0em} {\dot z_{34} }}\) . To estimate how long is this stability time, two main steps are required. First the perturbing potentials have to be developed in series; the relevant small parameters are some combinations of mass ratios and length ratios, the? ij of Roy and Walker. When an appropriate perturbation theory is based on the? ij , the asymptotic expansions are much more rapidly decreasing than the usual expansions in powers of the mass ratios (as in the classical Lagrange perturbation theory) and can be extended also to cases such as lunar theory or double binaries. The second step is the computation of the time derivatives \(\dot z_{ij} \) (we limit ourselves to the planar case). To assess the long term behaviour of the system, we can neglect the short-periodic perturbations and discuss only the long-periodic and the secular perturbations. By using a Poisson bracket formalism, a generalization of Lagrange theorem for semimajor axes and a generalization of the classical first order theories for eccentricities and pericenters, we prove that thez ij do not undergo any secular perturbation, because of the interaction with the other subsystem, at the first order in the? ik . After the long-periodic perturbations have been accounted for, and apart from the small divisors problems that could arise both from ordinary and secular resonances, only the second order terms have to be considered in the computation of Δt 23, Δt 34. A full second order perturbative theory is beyond the scope of this paper; however an order-of-magnitude lower estimate of the Δt ij can be obtained with the very pessimistic assumption that essentially all the second order terms affect in a secular way thez ij . The same method could be applied also toN≥5 body systems. Since almost everyN-body system existing in nature is strongly hierarchical, the product of two? ij is very small for almost all the real astronomical problems. As an example, the hierarchical stability of the 4-body system Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter is investigated; this system turns out to be stable for at least 110 million years. Although this hierarchical stability time is ~10 times less than the real age of the Solar System, taking into account that many pessimistic assumptions have been done we can conclude that the stability of the Solar System is no more a forbidden problem for Celestial Mechanics.  相似文献

Kontar et al. (2004) have shown how to recover mean source electron spectra in solar flares through a physical constraint regularization analysis of the bremsstrahlung photon spectra I() that they produce. They emphasize the use of non-square inversion techniques, and preconditioning combined with physical properties of the spectra to achieve the most meaningful solution to the problem. Higher-order regularization techniques may be used to generate forms with certain desirable properties (e.g., higher-order derivatives). They further note that such analysis may be used to infer properties of the electron energy spectra at energies well above the maximum photon energy observed. In this paper we apply these techniques to data from a solar flare observed by RHESSI on 26 February, 2002. Results using different orders of regularization are presented and compared for various time intervals. Clear evidence is presented for a change in the value of the high-energy cutoff in the mean source electron spectrum with time. We also show how the construction of the injected electron spectrum F0(E0) (assuming that Coulomb collisions in a cold target dominate the electron transport) is facilitated by the use of higher-order regularization methods.  相似文献

The process of eutrophication in the Adriatic Sea Basin has emerged over recent decades as a problem that demands special consideration and treatment; one of the most important reasons is the damage to the economy due to its undesired effects.Scientific knowledge concerning this process, while not exhaustive, is sufficient as a basis for directing action. But the experience acquired to date demonstrates that scientific knowledge alone cannot steer practical action, assuring the use of all existing (limited) knowledge to define the best practicable actions in a given time and place. In other terms, the institutional framework has not been able to use this knowledge for improving the environmental state of the Basin.To overcome this unsatisfactory situation, a different definition of the problem is proposed, as well as a different way for designing suitable solutions.  相似文献

Particulate biogenic barium (bio-Ba) fluxes obtained from three instrumented arrays moored in the Alboran Sea, the westernmost basin in the Mediterranean Sea, are presented in this study. The mooring lines were deployed over almost 1 year, from July 1997 to May 1998, and were equipped with sediment traps at 500–700 m depth, 1000–1200 m depth and 30 m above the seafloor (1000–2200 m). The results obtained support the growing body of evidence that the relationship between particulate bio-Ba and Corg throughout the water column in margin systems is clearly different from this relation in the open ocean. In the Alboran Sea, the annual averaged bio-Ba fluxes range from 0.39 to 1.07 μmol m−2 day−1, with mean concentrations of 1.31–1.69 μmol g−1 and bio-Ba/Corg ratios lower than in the open ocean. The low bio-Ba values obtained also indicate that calculating bio-Ba is extremely sensitive to the detrital Ba/Al ratio of each sample. The lithogenic Ba fraction in the Alboran Sea continental margin area contributes between 24% and 85% of the total Ba. Increased bio-Ba export efficiency was observed after periods of high primary productivity and suggests that the processes limiting the bio-Ba formation in the study area relate to settling dynamics of organic matter aggregates. Furthermore, the ballasting effect of the abundant lithogenic and carbonate particles may limit decomposition of organic matter aggregates and enhance the transfer of particles rich in Corg and relatively poor in bio-Ba to the deep seafloor. Lateral input of freshly sedimented biogenic material, including particulate bio-Ba, has been observed on the lower continental slope in the western Alboran Sea. These observations emphasize that the use of the bio-Ba as a proxy of export productivity from the surface ocean must be used cautiously in highly dynamic environments such as those in the Alboran Sea.  相似文献

A new methodology for computing the gravitational effect of a spherical tesseroid has been devised and implemented. The methodology is based on the rotation from the global Earth-Centred Rotational reference frame to the local Earth-Centred P-Rotational reference frame, referred to the computation point P, and it requires knowledge of the height and the angular extension of each topographic column. After rotation, the gravitational effect of the tesseroid is computed via the effect of a sector of the spherical zonal band. In this respect, two possible procedures for handling the rotated tesseroids have been proposed and tested. The results obtained with the devised methodology are in good agreement with those derived by applying other existing methodologies.  相似文献
