Photometers on the ISIS-II spacecraft provide a view of the atomic oxygen 5577 and 6300 Å emissions and the emission detected as dayside aurora in the magnetospheric cleft region. The 6300 Å emission forms a continuous and permanent band across the noon sector, at about 78° invariant latitude, with a defined region of maximum intensity that is never less than 2kR (uncorrected for albedo), and is centred near magnetic noon. There are significant differences in the intensity patterns on either side of noon and their responses to geomagnetic activity. Discrete 3914 Å auroral forms appear within this region, at preferred locations that cannot be precisely specified, but which tend to the poleward edge of the 6300 Å emission in the evening, and the equatorward edge in the morning where the difference between the two emissions is greatest. It is concluded that the discrete auroras observed by all-sky cameras in the day sector do follow the 6300 Å emission through the cleft region, though a definite cleft boundary is not defined. Substantial 6300 Å emission having a peak intensity near noon is also seen in the low latitude “outer auroral belt”, while the diffuse 3914 Å emission tends to show a relative minimum near noon. During the evening of 9 April and the morning of 10 April 1969, the twilight zenith intensity of the atomic oxygen red line OI(3P-1D) at 6300 Å was measured at the Blue Hill Observatory (42°N, 17°W). At the same time incoherent scatter radar data were being obtained at the Millstone Hill radar site 50 km distant. We have used a diurnal model of the mid-latitude F-region to calculate the ionospheric structure over Millstone Hill conditions similar to 9–10 April 1969. The measured electron temperature, ion temperature, and electron density at 800 km are used as boundary conditions for the model calculations. The diurnal variation of neutral composition and temperature were obtained from the OGO-6 empirical model and the neutral winds were derived from a semiempirical three-dimensional dynamic model of the neutral thermosphere. The solar EUV flux was adjusted to yield reasonable agreement between the calculated and observed ionospheric properties.This paper presents the results of these model computations and calculations of the red line intensity. The 6300 Å emission includes contributions from photoelectron excitation, dissociative recombination, Schumann-Runge photodissociation and thermal electron impact. The variations of these four components for morning and evening twilight between 90–120° solar zenith angles, and their relative contributions to the total 6300 Å emission line intensity, are presented and the total is compared to the observations. For this particular day the Schumann-Runge photodissociation component, calculated using the solar fluxes tabulated by Ackermann (1970), is the dominant component of the morning twilight 6300 Å emission. During evening twilight it is necessary to utilize a lower O2 density than for the morning twilight in order to bring the calculated and observed 6300 Å emission rates into agreement. The implication that there may be a diurnal variation in the O2 density at the base of the thermosphere is discussed in the light of available experimental data and current theoretical ideas. 相似文献

All-sky camera observations from two stations in the inner (northern) polar cap and an auroral zone station are combined with photometer records from the polar cap station Nord in a study of the brilliant auroral display following the ssc of the storm of 7 November 1970. This display is the large, poleward expanding bulge of a substorm triggered by the ssc. It is composed of brilliant discrete forms embedded in low-intensity diffuse electron and proton aurora. The poleward edge of the diffuse electron aurora is 5° north of the discrete auroras and 3° north of the proton aurora. The intensity of the discrete aurora varies as the strength of the auroral electrojet as shown by magnetograms from auroral zone stations. Succeeding the retreating display a subvisible low-energy electron precipitation, which may be identified as the polar squall (Winningham and Heikkila, 1974) is observed over the polar cap during the main phase of the storm.In the early morning sector already existing diffuse auroras broaden towards the equator from the time of the ssc and at least during the following half hour.Ssc-triggered displays have been found (Feldstein, 1959) to withdraw from the inner polar cap as the initial (positive H) phase of the storm ends. A comparison of the records from seven low-latitude stations shows that during this particular storm the positive phase appears to be composed by two overlapping disturbances, i.e. the proper initial phase, which is generally thought to be due to compression of the inner magnetosphere and a series of positive bays accompanying the negative bays in auroral latitudes. These positive bays are observable over a great range of longitudes with a maximum of amplitude near midnight. As judged from the dayside magnetograms the initial (compression) phase ends at an early stage of the substorm. The observed coincidence between the withdrawal of the display and the cessation of the positive H phase of the storm is a consequence of the fact that the second component—the positive bays—and the auroral display over the polar cap are both signatures of the substorm activity. 相似文献

Electron spectra obtained during the flight of Black Brant VB-31 on August 17, 1970 through a stable aurora to a height of 268 km have been analyzed in detail to obtain the pitch angle distributions from 25 to 155° and the electron energy distributions over an energy range of 18 keV to 20 eV through the region of atmospheric interaction down to 97 km. Backscatter ratios for 140° pitch angle range from 0.065 for 18 keV electrons to 0.22 for 1 keV electrons. Backscatter of lower energy electrons decreases with atmospheric depth below 200 km. The effect of the interactions between auroral electrons and the atmosphere is such as to give a peak in electron flux which moves progressively to higher energies with penetration depth. The secondary electron flux increases monotonically with height up to 200 km. The secondary electron spectrum can be approximated by an energy power over small energy ranges but its form is somewhat dependent on height and on the primary electron spectrum. 相似文献

In an earlier paper the latitudinal and longitudinal structure of ionospheric current flow during a sequence of magnetospheric substorms was presented (McDiarmid and Harris, 1976). In the present paper the relationships between the electrojets, the radio aurora observed at 48 MHz and the all-sky camera-recorded visual aurora are presented for the same substorm sequence. First measurements of the short time variations of Ap stars with the twin telescope show a nonlinear drift caused by a sensibility of the amplifier depending on temperature. Moreover we found a dependence of the impulse rate on the position of the star image in the diaphragm. Special test measurements with a simple incandescent lamp show that this telescope gives results with an accuracy of ± 0.002 mag after elimination of these effects. 相似文献

We present the first observations of the AM Her type object EF Eri where both the polarization and the photometric data are recorded simultaneously in five color bands (UBVRI). The position angle rotates strongly (30°) vs. wavelength from U to I, probably due to Faraday rotation or due to fact that the polarized radiation seen in the different wavelength bands comes from different parts of the accretion region. The phase dependence of the position angle requires field and accretion geometry more complicated than a simple centered dipole and a second emitting region producing weaker intermediate pulses in the infrared seems to be present. An analytic magnetic field model for the Earth's magnetosphere is constructed from a dipole field and a tail field. This model can be taken as a generalization of the Dungey's model, after one adds to it a horizontal component. The magnetic topology in the noon-midnight meridian plane of this model is fully determined and it is compared with the topology of other models. In this study it is found that, for a specific value of the parameterk, which is associated to any form of the model, the noon's side neutral points obey a bifurcation scheme. 相似文献

An attempt is made to construct a self-consistent model for type II radio bursts. It is proposed that a majority of the type II shocks are super-critical and the reflected ions from such type II shock fronts are described by the drifted Maxwellian in the upstream and by the Dory-Guest-Harris distribution in the downstream. The low-frequency waves excited by these ions accelerate electrons resonantly along the field lines both in the upstream as well as in the downstream, which are responsible for the lower-frequency and upper-frequency bands in the dynamic spectrum of a type II radio burst. High-resolution images of the decay phase of a soft X-ray flare observed by the S-054 experiment on Skylab are compared with interferometric scans of the radio burst obtained simultaneously at 2.8 cm (Felli et al., 1975). The spatial resulution of the radio instrument in one direction, although lower than the X-ray telescope resolution, is high enough for a detailed comparison. The comparison clarifies the relationship between the sources of soft X-ray and thermal radio emission in solar flares. The X-ray emission is localized in a loop-like structure which appears spatially coincident with the rapidly varying component of the radio burst. The more stable components of the radio source, which do not appear to contribute substantially to X-ray emission, are found to be spatially associated with the extremes of the X-ray loop.
