Land—ocean transfer of sediment and organic matter along the Moroccan Atlantic margin (NW Africa) seems to have been very effective during the last 130 ka. In a marine core from this region, we found total organic carbon (TOC) values ranging from 0.3 to 1.7 dry wt% of bulk sediments. These relatively high values are fairly unusual, as the core was recovered from an open-ocean environment that is currently oligotrophic. In order to explain this trend, more typical of an upwelling eutrophic setting, three processes were evaluated: (1) in situ primary production associated with the extension of the Cape Ghir upwelling filament, (2) bottom water conditions that may favour organic carbon preservation and (3) lateral organic carbon advection. The site occasionally experienced more eutrophic conditions, especially during termination I; here, we recorded a relative high abundance of the planktonic foraminifer Globigerina bulloides, suggesting high primary production. However, given the absence of correlation between TOC and G. bulloides records, high TOC storage cannot be attributed exclusively to primary production. Preservation factors such as bottom water ventilation are also ruled out. Lateral TOC advection seems to be the most plausible process. Today, lateral advection and offshore transport of nutrients and organic matter characterize the study region. However, the triggering mechanisms deserve further investigation. Different controlling factors influencing the mobilization and advection of organic carbon from coastal upwelling sites to the deep basin are discussed. The correlation found between down-core TOC and sea-level changes suggests sea-level fluctuations as the most effective mechanism driving nepheloid layer detachment and seaward material transport. 相似文献
Summary The Spanish island of Mallorca is located almost in the centre of the western Mediterranean. Very often from April to October, and almost every day during the summer, the sea breeze circulation develops. The shape and the topography of the island determine that the main characteristic feature of the sea breeze is the existence of a convergence line in the centre of the island. In this paper we describe the sea breeze circulation. A very simple non-eulerian numerical model allows us to simulate the evolution of the circulation during 24 hours. With 10 Figures 相似文献
Summary Several cases of lee cyclogenesis that occurred during ALPEX-SOP have been analyzed, with the aim of separating the large scale structures from the subsynoptic/meso-a scale features that are characteristic of this meteorological phenomenon. The results presented here are mainly based on composites of the analyzed cases. We assume that the deformation caused by the orography can be, at least to a reasonable extent, isolated from the undisturbed state using scale separation. The analysis technique we employ provides the scale separation as built-in in the interpolation algorithm. The scale separation error due to the large inhomogeneities of the data density distribution is partly corrected using a method described in the text. The orographic disturbance appears in different mesoscale fields as a quasiantisymmetric dipolar structure. For example, high/low pressure, cold/warm temperature and anticyclonic/cyclonic couplets characterize the mesoscale fields near the Alps. A qualitative agreement is found with the structure of the orographically induced perturbations predicted by the normal mode theory of lee cyclogenesis. With 7 Figures 相似文献
Block-in-matrix formations in the Variscan foreland of Spain (Cantabrian Zone) occur in two different geological settings. The major block-in-matrix formations are mélanges, which appear as carpets beneath or ahead of submarine thrust systems. These mélanges may reach up to kilometric thickness and are mostly composed of broken formations (boudinaged sequences) of late Carboniferous age and scattered ‘exotic’ blocks derived from older Palaeozoic formations. Moreover, the mélanges in the Cantabrian Zone also include subordinate debris flow deposits with a chaotic block-in-matrix fabric (olistostromes). The source of the mélange blocks was the front of advancing nappes, chiefly the upper part of the nappe stacks. Therefore, the Cantabrian mélanges are interpreted as originated through submarine sliding and slumping associated with steep slopes at the orogenic front. The different types of rock bodies of these mélanges may be related to the degree of lithification of the sediments or rocks during slumping. So, broken formations are boudinaged sequences where the boudins or blocks resulted from extensional faults developed in lithified or semilithified limestones and sandstones, whereas the unlithified muddy matrix underwent continuous deformation. The scattered ‘exotic’ blocks ranging in age from early Cambrian to early Carboniferous were incorporated into the mélanges as individual blocks from competent well-lithified formations, originally located in the lower part of the nappe stacks. Although the Cantabrian Zone mélanges include olistostromic intervals, most of the olistostromes of this zone occur in a different geological setting. They are usually intercalated in the normal marine deposits of the Variscan foreland basin and, in contrast to the mélanges, they are mostly related to the margins of carbonate platforms, ahead of moving nappes. Finally, other instances of olistostromes are related to slopes generated by limb rotation of growth folds, which developed on submarine wedge-top successions. 相似文献
Summary A convective case producing heavy precipitation in the western Mediterranean region, characterized by pronounced upper level
forcing and main rainfall over the sea, is studied. On the day of the event (September 28th, 1994), more than 140 mm of precipitation were recorded in coastal lands of eastern Spain, and 180 mm were estimated over
the sea with radar data. Synoptically, the case appears to combine warm and moist easterly advection at low levels, typically
observed in torrential rainfall events of the region, with a less common strong upper level dynamical forcing. A set of mesoscale
numerical simulations using the Hirlam model is performed to investigate the mechanisms responsible for the convection development,
and to assess the influence of the orography on the rainfall field. Model output diagnosis indicates that in addition to the
lower level forcing, a two-jets interaction is decisive for the triggering and driving of the convection during the event.
Moreover, a non-topographic simulation reveals a relatively weak influence of the orography on this event when compared with
other similar heavy precipitation cases in eastern Spain. Previous studies have shown an orographic influence of more than
90% on the rainfall whereas in this case about 50% of the precipitation over the area is attributed to the orographic forcing.
The study is extended with an analysis of the individual effects of the Atlas and Iberian Peninsula, by means of a factor
separation technique. It is shown that the Atlas range induces a redistribution of the precipitation over the Mediterranean,
whereas local enhancements can be attributed to the Iberian topography.

CoRoT is a space telescope which aims at studying internal structure of stars and detecting extrasolar planets. We present here a list of transits detected in the light curves of stars observed by CoRoT in two fields in the anti-center direction: the LRa03 one observed during 148 days from 3 October 2009 to 1 March 2010 followed by the SRa03 one from the 5 March 2010 to the 29 March 2010 during 25 days. 5329 light curves for the LRa03 field and 4169 for the SRa03 field were analyzed by the detection team of CoRoT. Then some of the selected exoplanetary candidates have been followed up from the ground. In the LRa03 field, 19 exoplanet candidates have been found, 8?remain unsolved. No secured planet has been found yet. In the SRa03 field, there were 11 exoplanetary candidates among which 6 cases remain unsolved and 3 planets have been found: CoRoT-18b, CoRoT-19b, CoRoT-20b. 相似文献
Carbon and Sr-isotope profiles in Upper Cambrian platformal carbonate Formations in the Precordillera, western Argentina (Zonda, La Flecha and La Silla Formations), were constructed for three representative sections: (a) Quebrada de la Flecha, Eastern Precordillera, (b) Cerro La Silla, Central Precordillera and (c) Quebrada de La Angostura, northern part of the Central Precordillera.
At Quebrada de La Angostura, upper part of the La Flecha Formation, δ13Ccarb varies continuously up-section from − 2.0 to + 5.6‰ (PDB) and records the SPICE anomaly (+ 5‰) reported for the first time in South America. The peak of this excursion is characterized by intercalated 2 m thick beds of black shale with marl and limestone that record the onset of a sea-level change.
The Steptoean Zonda Formation dolomites at the Quebrada de la Flecha exhibit a total δ13C range from − 2.7 to + 0.6‰ with discrete positive anomaly about 200 m from the transition to the overlying Sunwaptan La Flecha Formation. Pronounced C-isotope anomaly (− 5.6‰) is observed in the La Flecha Formation at about 300 m below the transition to the La Silla Formation.
At the Cerro La Silla section, the Zonda Formation exhibit δ13C values of − 1‰, increasing slightly at the transition to the La Flecha Formation (− 1 to 0‰). The transition of the La Flecha to the La Silla Formations is characterized by alternation of black shales and dolomitic limestone with a discrete positive C-isotope excursion, probably corresponding to the SPICE.
At the Quebrada de La Flecha, 87Sr/86Sr for the Zonda Formation varies from 0.70924 to 0.70955 and for the La Flecha Formation from 0.70908 to 0.70942. At Cerro La Silla this ratio varies from 0.70914 to 0.70923 for the La Flecha Formation, and from 0.70898 to 0.70980 for the La Silla Formation. At the Quebrada de La Angostura, ratios for the La Flecha carbonates range from 0.70918 to 0.70993. The overall variation of 87Sr/86Sr is consistent with globally reported Upper Cambrian seawater values at ca. 500 Ma.
The unambiguous record of SPICE in the La Flecha Formation at the Quebrada de La Angostura supports a Steptoean age for its deposition and allows precise local, regional, and global stratigraphic correlation. The pronounced negative C-isotope excursion recorded in the La Flecha Formation carbonates at the Quebrada de La Flecha is likely equivalent to that registered in Sunwaptan carbonates of North America and Australia, and might be tied to a global event, as a valuable tool in stratigraphic correlation (SNICE, acronym for Sunwaptan negative isotope carbon excursion). 相似文献
The Andean Plateau of NW Argentina is a prominent example of a high‐elevation orogenic plateau characterized by internal drainage, arid to hyper‐arid climatic conditions and a compressional basin‐and‐range morphology comprising thick sedimentary basins. However, the development of the plateau as a geomorphic entity is not well understood. Enhanced orographic rainout along the eastern, windward plateau flank causes reduced fluvial run‐off and thus subdued surface‐process rates in the arid hinterland. Despite this, many Puna basins document a complex history of fluvial processes that have transformed the landscape from aggrading basins with coalescing alluvial fans to the formation of multiple fluvial terraces that are now abandoned. Here, we present data from the San Antonio de los Cobres (SAC) area, a sub‐catchment of the Salinas Grandes Basin located on the eastern Puna Plateau bordering the externally drained Eastern Cordillera. Our data include: (a) new radiometric U‐Pb zircon data from intercalated volcanic ash layers and detrital zircons from sedimentary key horizons; (b) sedimentary and geochemical provenance indicators; (c) river profile analysis; and (d) palaeo‐landscape reconstruction to assess aggradation, incision and basin connectivity. Our results suggest that the eastern Puna margin evolved from a structurally controlled intermontane basin during the Middle Miocene, similar to intermontane basins in the Mio‐Pliocene Eastern Cordillera and the broken Andean foreland. Our refined basin stratigraphy implies that sedimentation continued during the Late Mio‐Pliocene and the Quaternary, after which the SAC area was subjected to basin incision and excavation of the sedimentary fill. Because this incision is unrelated to baselevel changes and tectonic processes, and is similar in timing to the onset of basin fill and excavation cycles of intermontane basins in the adjacent Eastern Cordillera, we suspect a regional climatic driver, triggered by the Mid‐Pleistocene Climate Transition, caused the present‐day morphology. Our observations suggest that lateral orogenic growth, aridification of orogenic interiors, and protracted plateau sedimentation are all part of a complex process chain necessary to establish and maintain geomorphic characteristics of orogenic plateaus in tectonically active mountain belts. 相似文献
