Reexamination of a photograph of Saturn taken on 15 November 1966, when the earth was nearly in the ring plane, indicates that ring material may exist outside the visible rings, extending to more than 6 Saturnian radii. Although the suspected feature on the photograph appears to be real, the possibility of its being a developed pressure mark or a chance alignment of grains cannot be ruled out. The observed brightness in blue light was estimated to be mB = 19.5 ± 0.5 per linear arcsecond, implying a normal optical thickness, τ ? 10?7, for ice-covered particles. For spacecraft passing through this region, the hazards are found to be minimal.  相似文献

The information available for determining palaeopoles for oceanic plates includes data of four types: (1) palaeomagnetic measurements of inclinations but not declinations from core samples; (2) palaeopoles determined from magnetic anomalies over seamounts; (3) phase shifts of linear magnetic anomalies; and (4) palaeoequators determined from geological analysis of sediment cores. A method is presented which combines these different kinds of data and their respective confidence limits to yield a best fit pole, a confidence ellipse, estimates of the data importances and goodness of fit parameters. Using this method we calculate the Campanian pole position for the Pacific plate which is shown by a chi-squared test to be a reasonable fit to the data. We conclude that the method should be a useful tool for calculating pole paths for oceanic plates such as the Pacific and Indian plates.  相似文献

Petrographic examination of the xenolith and xenocryst populations in the olivine‐phyric shergottite Elephant Moraine 79001 Lithology A shows more chemical heterogeneity than previously documented. Analyses of olivine grains in 18 megacrysts and in 4 lithic fragments show that these two populations either do not have the same source or that this source is heterogeneous in terms of its time–temperature history. Additionally, among the four lithic fragments analyzed, two are distinctive (1) one contains a major‐element‐equilibrated, euhedral olivine grain and (2) the second contains high‐magnesium pyroxene cores. Furthermore, two populations of ferroan olivine were identified (1) one more ferroan than any other reported in EET 79001 and (2) a slightly less ferroan, unequilibrated olivine, but with a restricted range in Mg#. We have also observed an equilibrated pyroxene grain associated with a zoned olivine megacryst. As a result, we recognize that the xenolith/xenocryst population does not represent the incorporation of a single xeno‐lithology into Lithology A, and propose that it be subdivided into a suite of seven identified lithologies, with the understanding that more are likely to be identified with further study. The abundance of Ca in olivine in the xeno‐lithologies suggests a set of crustal, rather than deep mantle, lithologies. Diffusion rates in olivine suggest that the lithologies were incorporated shortly before rapid cooling of the host magma, preserving preexisting mineral chemical zoning. These mineral chemical zones could have been preserved at lower crustal temperatures for up to 10s of Ka. Trace‐element studies of these distinct populations would be required to test whether they are related by igneous processes from a common source magma.  相似文献

A year-long trawl survey of the mangrove-fringed Laguna Joyuda, Puerto Rico yielded 41 species of juvenile and adult fishes. Twelve percent of the species and 55% of the individuals were residents in the lagoon; 56% of the species and 44% of the individuals were cyclic visitors, mostly juveniles of species which spawn offshore. The lagoon yielded fewer species than tropical estuaries in continental regions of the Caribbean and temperate estuaries of North America. However, paralleling other estuarine habitats, Laguna Joyuda supported three primary types of fishes, a resident small flatfish (Achirus lineatus), a complex of transient juveniles (Gerreidae, paralleling the Sciaenidae of higher latitudes), and small planktivores (Anchoa spp.). Seasonal patterns in the abundance of individual species were not strong, but overall abundance showed a wet season maximum, particularly because of recruitment of anchovies and cyclic visitors in April, May, and June. Wet season abundance corresponded with highest water column productivity and detrital input to the benthos. Fishes associated with the water column appeared to show greater variation in abundance than those associated with more stable benthic food webs.  相似文献

Abstract— Geothermometry based on the compositions of clinopyroxenes in type 6 and 7 LL chondrites gives coherent results, but the estimated temperatures from coexisting orthopyroxenes are consistently lower than for clinopyroxenes. Orthopyroxene thermometry is suspect because of compositional effects of polymorphic inversions and/or unknown kinetic factors. Lack of clinopyroxene equilibration precludes accurate estimation of peak metamorphic temperatures for type 4 and 5 chondrites. There is no apparent correlation between Al content (a pressure-dependent variable) and equilibration temperature in chondritic pyroxenes. This finding, which is at variance with a previously published conclusion that temperature and pressure are correlated in metamorphosed chondrites, may have important implications for asteroid thermal models.  相似文献
