The concentrations of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC-11, CFC-12, and CFC-113) and tritium were determined in groundwater in fractured crystalline bedrock at Finnsjön, Sweden. The specific goal was to investigate the accuracy of CFC dating in such an environment, taking potential degradation and mixing of water into consideration. The water was sampled to a depth of 42 m in three boreholes along an 800-m transect, from a recharge area to a local discharge area. The CFC-113 concentration was at the detection limit in most samples. The apparent recharge date obtained from CFC-11 was earlier than from CFC-12 for all samples, with a difference of over 20 years for some samples. The difference was probably caused by degradation of CFC-11. The CFC-12 dating of the samples ranged from before 1945 to 1975, with the exception of a sample from the water table, which had a present-day concentration. Conclusions about flow paths or groundwater velocity could not be drawn from the CFCs. The comparison between CFC-12 and tritium concentrations showed that most samples could be unmixed or mixtures of waters with different ages, and the binary mixtures that matched the measured concentrations were determined. The mixing model approach can be extended with additional tracers.
Resumen Precisión en la datación de aguas subterráneas utilizando CFC en un acuífero de rocas cristalinas: datos provenientes de un sitio al sur de Suecia.Se determinaron las concentraciones de clorofluorucarbonos (CFC-11, CFC-12, y CFC-113) y de tritio en aguas subterráneas alojadas en rocas cristalinas fracturadas de Finnsjön, Suecia. El objetivo específico consistió en investigar la precisión de la datación de aguas subterráneas con CFC en este tipo de ambiente, tomando en consideración la degradación potencial y la mezcla de agua. Las muestras de agua se tomaron a una profundidad de 42 m en tres pozos ubicados a lo largo de una línea de 800 m transversal a una zona de recarga y de zona de descarga local. En la mayoría de las muestras se encontró que la concentración de CFC-113 estuvo en el límite de detección. La edad que se estimó en todas las muestras para la recarga aparente en base a CFC-11 fue más joven que la edad proveniente de CFC-12, con una diferencia de más de 20 años para algunas muestras. Esta diferencia fue causada probablemente por la degradación del CFC-11. La datación CFC-12 de las muestras varió de antes de 1945 a 1975, con la excepción de una muestra tomada en el nivel freático, la cual presentó concentración actual. Résumé Précision de la datation au CFC dans un aquifère rocheux-fracturé: données dun site du sud de la Suède.Les concentrations en chlorofluorocarbones (CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113) et entritium ont été déterminées dans leau souterraine dun massif fracturé à Finnsjön en Suède. Le but de cette étude est de mieux cerner la précision de la méthode de datation au CFC dans ce type denvironnement hydrogéologique, tout en considérant déventuels phénomènes de dégradation et de mélange deaux. Leau a été échantillonnée à une profondeur de 42 mètres dans trois forages alignés sur 800 mètres entre une zone de recharge et une zone de déversement. Les concentrations en CFC-113 sont dans la plupart des échantillons à la limite de détection. Pour tous les échantillons, la date de la recharge établie avec le CFC-11 est antérieure à la date établie avec le CFC-12. La différence entre les deux dates peut dépasser 20 ans et sexplique—probablement—par la dégradation du CFC-11. Les dates de recharge de la nappe mesurées au CFC-12 sont comprises entre 1945 et 1975, excepté pour un échantillon qui possède une concentration actuelle. Il nest pas possible de tirer des conclusions concernant la direction des écoulements et la vitesse de leau souterraine. La comparaison entre CFC-12 et tritium montre que des échantillons pourraient être soit le résultat du mélange deaux dâges différents, soit des échantillons non-mélangés. Dans le cas dun mélange binaire, les rapports du mélange composant la concentration mesurée sont déterminés. Lapproche par modèle de mélange peut être étendue à des traceurs additionnels.

The effect of realistic ionospheric Hall conductances on axisymmetric toroidal mode hydromagnetic wave resonances is investigated. The toroidal modes couple to evanescent poloidal modes near the ionospheres such that the composite modes resonate at the constant frequencies of the corresponding single-field-shell resonances for zero Hall conductance. A model for these composite modes is developed which has narrow but finite latitudinal resonance widths such as to make the modes valid solutions of the hydromagnetic equations. The modes also suggest that “shell” solutions can realistically describe such properties of real pulsations as frequency, damping, phase variation along the field-line and node-antinode behaviour at the ionospheres. Estimates of ionospheric coupling strength are obtained and compared with magnetospheric coupling strength. It is found that magnetospheric coupling dominates ionospheric coupling for any single non-axisymmetric mode. However, ionospherically coupled axisymmetric modes should be necessary components of the Fourier sum of modes required to model any real pulsation of low to moderate apparent azimuthal wave number.Estimates of the range of magnetospheric coupling strength are obtained for pulsations under a variety of conditions.  相似文献

Magnetometer studies of the periods of mid-latitude ULF pulsations have produced conflicting results on the variation of the pulsation periods with both latitude and local time. Since the mid-latitude geomagnetic field is not expected to be significantly distorted by the solar wind, the observed diurnal period variations should be determined by changes in the ambient plasma density. We have applied a physically realistic plasmasphere model to the determination of pulsation eigenperiods over a 24-h interval at L=2.3 (appropriate to Wellington, New Zealand). The resulting model pulsation eigenperiods are largest during the day, with minimum and maximum values at 05.00 and 18.00 L.T. respectively. The model predicts a general increase in the eigenperiods during the replenishment of the protonosphere after a period of geomagnetic activity.  相似文献

X-ray photoelectron spectra have been obtained under the same experimental conditions for synthetic α-NiS and natural β-NiS in order to establish any difference in S electronic environment, and to test the proposition that S core electron binding energies increase measurably with coordination number when the same metal is in different sulfide structures or lattice sites. The Ni and S electronic environments in the two NiS structures have been further probed by near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, and the NEXAFS spectra interpreted by reference to spectra simulated by ab initio calculations. The photoelectron and NEXAFS spectra for freshly prepared surfaces of α-NiS and β-NiS were found to be similar, with only subtle differences in electronic environment evident in the experimental and simulated NEXAFS spectra. The measured and calculated core electron binding energies did not support the previously postulated relationship between S coordination number and electron binding energies.  相似文献

New data is presented for five evolved, low-Ti lunar mare basalt meteorites from the LaPaz Icefield, Antarctica, LAP 02205, LAP 02224, LAP 02226, LAP 02436, and LAP 03632. These basalts have nearly identical mineralogies, textures, and geochemical compositions, and are therefore considered to be paired. The LaPaz basalts contain olivine (Fo64-2) and pyroxene (Fs32Wo8En60 to Fs84-86Wo15En2-0) crystals that record extreme chemical fractionation to Fe-enrichment at the rims, and evidence for silicate liquid immiscibility and incompatible element enrichment in the mesostasis. The basalts also contain FeNi metals with unusually high Co and Ni contents, similar to some Apollo 12 basalts, and a single-phase network of melt veins and fusion crusts. The fusion crust has similar chemical characteristics to the whole rock for the LaPaz basalts, whereas the melt veins represent localized melting of the basalt and have an endogenous origin. The crystallization conditions and evolved nature of the LaPaz basalts are consistent with fractionation of olivine and chromite from a parental liquid similar in composition to some olivine-phyric Apollo 12 and Apollo 15 basalts or lunar low-Ti pyroclastic glasses. However, the young reported ages for the LaPaz mare basalts (∼2.9 Ga) and their relative incompatible element enrichment compared to Apollo mare basalts and pyroclastic glasses indicate they cannot be directly related. Instead, the LaPaz mare basalts may represent fractionated melts from a magmatic system fed by similar degrees of partial melting of a mantle source similar to that of the low-Ti Apollo mare basalts or pyroclastic glasses, but which possessed greater incompatible element enrichment. Despite textural differences, the LaPaz basalts and mare basalt meteorite NWA 032 have similar ages and compositions and may originate from the same magmatic system on the Moon.  相似文献

The equilibrium suggested as a buffer for CO2 in the Venus atmosphere, CaCO3 + SiO2 = CaSiO3 + CO2, cannot act as a buffer at the Venus surface/troposphere – the pressure–temperature slope of the equilibrium and that of the atmosphere (dry adiabat with significant greenhouse heating) do not provide buffering capacity (if indeed CaCO3 were present). Instead, perturbations to T or P(CO2) can produce catastrophic expansion or collapse of the atmosphere. This instability can be generalized to all devolatilization reactions that produce a radiatively active gas in a planetary atmosphere dominated by such gases, and gives a simple thermochemical criterion for whether a reaction could buffer such an atmosphere. Simple decarbonation reactions fail this criterion, suggesting that the abundance of CO2 in a CO2-dominated atmosphere cannot be buffered by chemical reactions with the surface; a similar conclusion holds for the abundance of H2O in an H2O-dominated (steam) atmosphere. Buffering of minor gases is more likely; a mineral buffer equilibrium for SO2 proposed for Venus, FeS2 + CO2 = Fe3O4 + SO2 + CO, passes the thermochemical criterion, as does a reaction involving Ca sulfate. These inferences can be generalized to atmospheres in ‘moist’ adiabatic equilibria, and to extrasolar Venus-like planets, and will help in interpreting the compositions of their atmospheres.  相似文献

Buildings, as impervious surfaces, are an important component of total impervious surface areas that drive urban stormwater response to intense rainfall events. Most stormwater models that use percent impervious area (PIA) are spatially lumped models and do not require precise locations of building roofs, as in other applications of building maps, but do require accurate estimates of total impervious areas within the geographic units of observation (e.g. city blocks or sub-watershed units). Two-dimensional mapping of buildings from aerial imagery requires laborious efforts from image analysts or elaborate image analysis techniques using high spatial resolution imagery. Moreover, large uncertainties exist where tall, dense vegetation obscures the structures. Analyzing LiDAR point-cloud data, however, can distinguish buildings from vegetation canopy and facilitate the mapping of buildings. This paper presents a new building extraction approach that is based on and optimized for estimating building impervious areas (BIA) for hydrologic purposes and can be used with standard GIS software to identify building roofs under tall, thick canopy. Accuracy assessment methods are presented that can optimize model performance for modeling BIA within the geographic units of observation for hydrologic applications. The Building Extraction from LiDAR Last Returns (BELLR) model, a 2.5D rule-based GIS model, uses a non-spatial, local vertical difference filter (VDF) on LiDAR point-cloud data to automatically identify and map building footprints. The model includes an absolute difference in elevation (AdE) parameter in the VDF that compares the difference between mean and modal elevations of last-returns in each cell.

The BELLR model is calibrated for an extensive inner-city, highly urbanized small watershed in Columbia, South Carolina, USA that is covered by tall, thick vegetation canopy that obscures many buildings. The calibration of BELLR used a set of building locations compiled by photo-analysts, and validation used independent building reference data. The model is applied to two residential neighborhoods, one of which is a residential area within the primary watershed and the other is a younger suburban neighborhood with a less-well developed tree canopy used as a validation site. Performance results indicate that the BELLR model is highly sensitive to concavity in the lasboundary tool of LAStools® and those settings are highly site specific. The model is also sensitive to cell size and the AdE threshold values. However, properly calibrated the BIA for the two residential sites could be estimated within 1% error for optimized experiments.

To examine results in a hydrologic application, the BELLR estimated BIAs were tested using two different types of hydrologic models to compare BELLR results with results using the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) 2011 Percent Developed Imperviousness data. The BELLR BIA values provide more accurate results than the use of the 2011 NLCD PIA data in both models. The VDF developed in this study to map buildings could be applied to LiDAR point-cloud filtering algorithms for feature extraction in machine learning or mapping other planar surfaces in more broad-based land-cover classifications.  相似文献

Horizontal wells dominate the development of unconventional shale reservoirs. Using real time drilling data to steer in a target zone is the key to economic success. Today structural interpretation in unconventional horizontal wells is a manual process that is time-consuming, tedious, and error-prone, especially because gamma-ray (GR) logs are commonly the only available logging-while-drilling data. For the first time, a method named TST3D is developed to automate interpretation of subsurface structure. TST3D (true stratigraphic thickness in three-dimensional space) automates structural interpretation using pattern recognition. Given an initial structural model, TST3D automatically computes true stratigraphic thickness (TST) as the shortest distance from each wellbore survey location to the initial surface, then matches GR patterns in the horizontal well to those seen in a vertical pilot well in TST domain. TST3D inserts fold hinges, bends the structure, then recomputes the modeled GR response, progressively matching the pilot well log signature, from heel to toe in the horizontal well. There are three assumptions in the current version of TST3D: constant layer thickness across the drilled interval, GR variation follows stratigraphic layering, and no faults are present in the drilled section. Those assumptions are reasonable in most shale plays. The TST3D method can be applied in either a post-drill mode for structural interpretation or real-time mode for aiding geosteering. Field tests in different shale plays and complex well trajectories demonstrate that TST3D runs quickly: a structural model of a 10,000-ft horizontal section can be computed in minutes, and a real-time update of 100 ft of new data takes less than a minute. Automating the geosteering correlation process would allow well placement engineers to cover multiple wells simultaneously, increasing the efficiency of the team while potentially improving service quality.
