A coupled continuum‐discrete hydromechanical model was employed to analyse the liquefaction of a saturated loose deposit of cohesionless particles when subjected to a dynamic base excitation. The pore fluid flow was idealized using averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the discrete element method was employed to model the solid phase particles. A well established semi‐empirical relationship was utilized to quantify the fluid–particle interactions. The conducted simulations revealed a number of salient micro‐mechanical mechanisms and response patterns associated with the deposit liquefaction. Space and time variation of porosity was a major factor which affected the coupled response of the solid and fluid phases. Pore fluid flow was within Darcy's regime. The predicted response exhibited macroscopic patterns consistent with experimental results and case histories of the liquefaction of granular soil deposits. This paper describes the application of environmental isotopes and injected tracer techniques in estimating the contribution of storms as well as annual precipitation to groundwater recharge and its circulation, in the semi‐arid region of Bagepalli, Kolar district, Karnataka. Environmental isotopes 2H, 18O and 3H were used to study the effect of storms on the hydrological system, and an isotope balance was used to compute the contribution of a storm component to the groundwater. Some of the groundwater samples collected during the post‐storm periods were highly depleted in stable isotope content with higher deuterium excess relative to groundwater from the pre‐storm periods. Significant variation in deuterium excess in groundwater from the same area, collected in two different periods, indicates the different origin of air masses. The estimated recharge component of a storm event of 600 mm to the groundwater was found to be in the range of 117–165 mm. There was no significant variation in environmental tritium content of post‐storm and pre‐storm groundwater, indicating the fast circulation of groundwater in the system. After completion of the environmental isotope work, an injected radiotracer 3H technique was applied to estimate the direct recharge of total precipitation to the groundwater. Summary Two co-existing plutonic rocks (diorite and granodiorite) were studied from an intrusion of Variscan age in the Raztocna Valley
– Nízke Tatry Mountains, Western Carpathians. Geochemical analyses of major and trace elements constrain a volcanic arc as
emplacement environment and give the first hints of a mixture of two magmatic end-members: the so-called Prasivá granodiorite
and the Raztocna diorite. The 87Sr/86Sr(0) ratios vary between 0.7075 and 0.7118, the ε Nd(0) values range from −1.4 to −5.0. Common Pb isotopes reveal a dominant crustal source with minor influences from a mantle and
a lower crustal source.
Modelling based on Sr and Nd isotope data and using three component mixing calculations indicates that mixing of 2/3 of upper
mantle material with 1/3 upper crustal material can produce the isotopic composition of the Raztocna diorite. Very minor amounts
of lower crust were incorporated in the diorite. For the Prasivá granodiorite, the mixing ratio of upper mantle and upper
crust is similar, but a lower crustal reservoir contributed about 5–10% of the source material. 相似文献

Summary The summer monsoon circulation shows various spatial and temporal oscillations and often a combination of systems produces
an integrated effect. In this study phases of the southwest (SW) monsoon have been identified in an objective manner with
the help of T-mode principal component analysis (PCA) of weekly rainfall anomalies. Mean composite charts have been prepared
utilising all available upper air data (1977–1986) for each category of the SW monsoon epochs identified by the PCA. These
sets of charts have been constructed for both the strong and weak phases associated with the first four significant principal
components (PCs).
A well defined east-west oriented trough system, extending from about 28° N Latitude/65° E Longitude to 20° N Latitude/90° E
Longitude, in the lower levels, has been the main feature associated with the strong phase of the monsoon corresponding to
PC I. The trough in the lower levels is more marked in the eastern half compared to the western half in both the sets of charts
associated with strong phases of the monsoon related to the PC II and PC III. With PC II, the position of the troughs in the
lower levels is further north of its location in PC III. The east-west trough system associated with the strong phase of PC
IV has a large southward tilt with height. The charts corresponding to the weak phases of these PCs have synoptic features,
such as the position of the trough close to the foothills of the Himalayas, and the shifting of middle and upper tropospheric
anticyclones to the south.
The study suggests an objective method of interpretation of principal components by utilising synoptic data. In addition,
synoptic models and data sets corresponding to different phases of the monsoon can also be prepared in an objective manner
by such PCA.

GPS satellite orbits available from the International GNSS Service (IGS) show a consistent radial bias of up to several cm
and a particular pattern in the Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) residuals, which are suggested to be related to radiation pressure
mismodeling. In addition, orbit-related frequencies were identified in geodetic time series such as apparent geocenter motion
and station displacements derived from GPS tracking data. A potential solution to these discrepancies is the inclusion of
Earth radiation pressure (visible and infrared) modeling in the orbit determination process. This is currently not yet considered
by all analysis centers contributing to the IGS final orbits. The acceleration, accounting for Earth radiation and satellite
models, is introduced in this paper in the computation of a global GPS network (around 200 IGS sites) adopting the analysis
strategies from the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE). Two solutions covering 9 years (2000–2008) with and without
Earth radiation pressure were computed and form the basis for this study. In previous studies, it has been shown that Earth
radiation pressure has a non-negligible effect on the GPS orbits, mainly in the radial component. In this paper, the effect
on the along-track and cross-track components is studied in more detail. Also in this paper, it is shown that Earth radiation
pressure leads to a change in the estimates of GPS ground station positions, which is systematic over large regions of the
Earth. This observed “deformation” of the Earth is towards North–South and with large scale patterns that repeat six times
per GPS draconitic year (350 days), reaching a magnitude of up to 1 mm. The impact of Earth radiation pressure on the geocenter
and length of day estimates was also investigated, but the effect is found to be less significant as compared to the orbits

The Rwenzori Mountains (Mtns) in west Uganda are the highest rift mountains on Earth and rise to more than 5,000 m. We apply
low-temperature thermochronology (apatite fission-track (AFT) and apatite (U–Th–Sm)/He (AHe) analysis) for tracking the cooling
history of the Rwenzori Mtns. Samples from the central and northern Rwenzoris reveal AFT ages between 195.0 (±8.4) Ma and
85.3 (±5.3) Ma, and AHe ages between 210.0 (±6.0) Ma to 24.9 (±0.5) Ma. Modelled time–temperature paths reflect a protracted
cooling history with accelerated cooling in Permo-Triassic and Jurassic times, followed by a long period of constant and slow
cooling, than succeeded by a renewed accelerated cooling in the Neogene. During the last 10 Ma, differentiated erosion and
surface uplift affected the Rwenzori Mtns, with more pronounced uplift along the western flank. The final rock uplift of the
Rwenzori Mtns that partly led to the formation of the recent topography must have been fast and in the near past (Pliocene
to Pleistocene). Erosion could not compensate for the latest rock uplift, resulting in Oligocene to Miocene AHe ages. 相似文献

A hybrid discrete–finite element model is introduced for simulation of mechanical behavior of geomaterials. The soil or rock is modeled as a system of discrete balls that interact through normal and shear springs. The balls can be bonded at the contact points to withstand the applied deviatoric stresses. The important feature of this model is that the confining walls that can be imagined for example as the surrounding membrane or the mold in a physical test are modeled by deformable finite elements. This allows simulation of laboratory test features more realistically compared to the situations where the surrounding walls are rigid. The relationships between micro- and macro-properties are investigated in this paper as well. These relationships and the corresponding curves are helpful tools in calibration of the numerical model for the macroscopic elastic properties. 相似文献
