Mediterranean environments have been subject to major land cover change since the end of the second world war. Housing, agricultural activities, forests, green spaces and other land uses have shifted due to urbanisation and tourism. These changes influence runoff, and municipal authorities often cannot estimate the net impact of complex land cover transitions. During this period, elected representatives have become increasingly sensitive to the risks of flooding and have implemented a number of channel management strategies. The main objective of this case study was to analyse the impact of land cover change on total storm runoff between 1950 and 2003 in a Mediterranean catchment near St Tropez, France. A secondary objective was to compare these changes to the impacts of channel management on bankfull discharge. Aerial photographs were used to classify land cover in 3 urban categories, vineyards and bare soil, forests, and green spaces. Stream discharge was estimated using a distributed event based total runoff approach. After validating the model for a large winter event (114 mm) for 1982, runoff was calculated for the same event for 1950 and 2003. Land cover changes occurred mainly in the alluvial plain area. Total gauge catchment urban area increased from 30.1 ha to 393.8 between 1950 and 2003 at the expense mainly of agricultural land, but this was compensated in part by an increase in grassed area. Some of the loss in vineyards was replaced by clearing forested land on the first hills close to the plain. Bank stabilisation and channel maintenance since the 1980’s reduced surface roughness and increased channel area, thereby greatly increasing bankfull discharge. While the impact of urbanisation on runoff was small, channel management effects increased bankfull discharge substantially. Flood damage from extreme events was not studied here.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of climate change on crop productivity in Africa using satellite derived data on land use and net primary productivity (NPP) at a small river basin scale, distinguishing between the impact of local and upper-catchment weather. Regression results show that both of these are determining factors of local cropland productivity. These estimates are then combined with climate change predictions obtained from two general circulation models (GCMs) under two greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) assumptions to evaluate the impact of climate change by 2100. For some scenarios significant decreases are predicted over the northern and southern parts of Africa.  相似文献

The present work reports on the temporal variations of Sb, As, V and Mo concentrations in the surface freshwater reaches of the Gironde Estuary (SW France). Dissolved (<0.2 and <0.02 μm) and particulate Sb, As, V and Mo concentrations were measured in samples collected with high temporal resolution (every 30 min) during two consecutive tides at a fixed station located upstream of the city of Bordeaux and the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ). In addition, measurements of suspended particulate matter concentration, physico-chemical parameters, Cl concentration, water depth, current velocity and particulate Th concentration were performed either at the same time resolution or continuously. The data obtained suggested that variations in particulate As, V and Mo concentrations were most probably related to tidal cycling near the sampling site of fine grained particles from the MTZ located downstream. Significant differences in the behavior of the dissolved target oxyanions, mostly present in the <0.02 μm fraction, occurred. The behavior of Sb was conservative. Variations of the dissolved As and V concentrations showed similar cycling trends, strongly related to tidal cycles. These As and V cycles were interpreted as a mixing between upstream freshwater and downstream water enriched in dissolved As and V by desorption from the MTZ particles. The observed trend in the variation of the dissolved Mo was more complex than that of As and Sb and attributed to the mixing of the water bodies mentioned above coupled to a point source input of dissolved Mo from an intra-estuarine source. The contribution of this suspected Mo source to the dissolved Mo concentrations measured at the sampling site was estimated from the ratio of dissolved Mo to dissolved As concentrations. The additional dissolved Mo signal, coupled to the monitored ebb and flood length and associated current velocities, suggested an anthropogenic input which may derive from industrial activity near the city of Bordeaux. Extrapolating these results to the annual scale suggested that this dissolved Mo may be equivalent to 45-90% of the annual dissolved Mo flux into the Garonne Branch, highlighting the importance to further investigate the origin and behavior of Mo in the fluvial estuary near Bordeaux.  相似文献

Benzene polycarboxylic acids formed upon oxidative degradation of the macromolecular network of a set of French coals with ruthenium tetroxide are proposed as the basis of new coal rank indices. Their distribution probably reflects the degree of condensation of the polyaromatic subunits occurring in the network of the coals. This feature is illustrated in the case of the benzene tetracarboxylic acids. Application of these molecular indices to Gondwana coals, as well as to maceral concentrates indicates that they are also type related. They could prove particularly useful in the case of coals or kerogens having undergone secondary alteration processes.  相似文献

Radio signatures of lightning discharges have been detected by the Voyager spacecraft near Saturn and Uranus up to 40 MHz. Corresponding flux densities at the distance of the Earth are up to 1000 Jansky (Jy) for Saturn (1 event per minute above 50 Jy, with 30–300 ms duration) and up to a few tens of Jansky for Uranus. Low Frequency ARray LOFAR will allow us to detect and monitor the lightning activity at these two planets. Imaging will allow us to locate lightning sources on Saturn's disk (even if with moderate accuracy), which could then be correlated to optical imaging of clouds. Such observations could provide new information on electrification processes, atmospheric dynamics, composition, and geographical and seasonal variations, compared to the Earth. In addition, lightning may play a role in the atmospheric chemistry, through the production of non-equilibrium trace organic constituents potentially important for biological processes. LOFAR observations can also help us to assess the existence of lightning at Neptune (marginally detected by Voyager), at Venus (where their existence is very controversial), and at Mars (possibly resulting from dust cloud charging). At Jupiter, low-altitude ionospheric layers of meteoritic origin and/or intrinsically long discharge duration seem to prevent the emission and escape of high-frequency radio waves associated with lightning. LOFAR thus presents good possibilities for the detection and study of solar system planetary lightning; we also discuss its relevance to bring new information on Terrestrial lightning-related upper atmosphere transient phenomena (sprites, TIPPs…). Mauritius is a volcanic island with a raised interior where extreme rainfall events dominate rainfall erosivity. Intra-event characteristics of the 120 highest erosive events at six selected locations between 2004 and 2008 were analyzed to provide the first detailed intra-storm data for a tropical island environment. On Mauritius, spatial variation is evident in the characteristics of extreme erosive rainfall recorded at the stations, with a noticeable increase in rainfall depth, duration, kinetic energy, and erosivity of extreme events with altitude. Extreme events in the raised interior (central plateau) show high variability of peak intensity over time as well as a higher percentage of events in which the greatest intensity occurs in the latter part of the event. Intra-event distribution of rainfall in the interior of the island shows that rainfall there has a higher potential to exceed infiltration rates as well as the ability to generate high peak runoff rates and cause substantial soil loss. The study suggests that even though within-event rainfall characteristics are complex, they have implications for soil erosion risk, and that, in tropical island environments, the within-storm distribution of rainfall should be incorporated in soil-loss modeling.  相似文献

Almost all Red Sea deeps contain metal-rich sediments covered by brine pools. It is generally agreed that these metal-rich deposits precipitated from overlying metal-rich brines that originated from migrating hydrothermal fluids. No brine pool has ever been reported in Thetis Deep, inciting us to evaluate if such a brine layer ever occurred in the deep during the past. In order to address that questioning, a study combining mineralogical, geochemical (major-, minor-, rare-earth elements) and isotopic (Sr, Nd, Pb) approaches was completed on cored sediments and extracted interstitial waters from inside and outside the deep.The sediments have an overall hydrothermal origin, as shown by the REE concentrations and patterns, metal contents, and Pb–Nd isotopic data, all pointing to a mantle signature. The intensity of the hydrothermal activity varied with time in the deep; the most intense episode resulting in an almost pure Fe-oxi-hydroxide layer. Varied chemical arguments, especially the Zr and REE data of the sediments, favor the fact that the whole sedimentation in Thetis Deep occurred in the absence of a stable, salt-rich and mineralized brine pool, and that no brine layer ever existed. This conclusion is supported by the constant Sr isotope composition of the sediment and its interstitial waters that are almost identical to that of the Red Sea seawater. The study also suggests that hydrothermal activity monitored fluid supplies that interacted differently with seawater in the different Red Sea deeps, resulting in an overall formation of metal-rich sediments, but along varied local conditions.  相似文献

Understanding trace metal behaviour in estuarine environments requires sampling strategies and analytical methods adapted to strong physical and geochemical gradients. In this study, we present a specific sampling strategy covering a wide range of hydrological conditions during nine cruises in 2003–2007 to characterise the behaviour of three dissolved metals (uranium, vanadium and molybdenum) in surface and bottom water along the salinity gradient of the highly turbid macrotidal Gironde Estuary using a solid–liquid extraction. Uranium behaved conservatively whatever the water discharges observed. The slight dissolved U depletion compared to the theoretical dilution line between the fluvial and marine end-members occasionally observed in the low salinity range (0–3) was attributed to the mixing of different water bodies of the Gironde tributaries. In contrast, dissolved V behaviour was largely influenced by the hydrological conditions, showing increasingly pronounced addition with decreasing freshwater discharges, (i.e. increasing residence times of water and particles in the estuary). This addition of dissolved V in the low- to mid-salinity range was attributed to desorption processes observed in the Maximum Turbidity Zone (MTZ). The distribution of dissolved Mo concentrations along the salinity gradient was highly variable. Apparent conservative, and non-conservative behaviours were observed and were related to the concomitance of desorption from SPM, inputs from sediments for additive distribution and biological uptake and removal into sediments for subtractive distribution. Based on the whole database (2003–2007), annual net fluxes to the coastal ocean were estimated for dissolved U (15.5–16.6 t yr−1) and V (31.3–36.7 t yr−1).  相似文献
