A freeze-drying technique for cutting thin-sections of soft sediments without disturbance is used to study several Lake Baikal
sedimentary microstructures. Image analysis methodology is applied to selected thin-sections. This new technique provides
quantification of the size, shape, orientation and packing of the objects forming the sedimentary structures. Sedimentary
processes, which were previously poorly documented, have been identified, and others are better understood. Spheroidal lens-like
pure aggregates of the diatom genus Synedra are found in hemipelagic sediments, providing a new insight into their traditional paleoecological interpretation. They are
possibly related to a transportation mechanism from the littoral zone or to lacustrine snow. Laminae of Aulacoseira have also been recorded. Evidence of rapid sedimentation suggests they are due to massive algal blooms. The depositional mechanism
that was suggested by other studies for explaining the laminations at the Buguldeika uplift is confirmed: the hemipelagic
sedimentation is interrupted by terrigenous pulses due to discharge events. The sedimentation rate appears to be increasing
during these pulses. Preliminary results from the Academician Ridge show stronger microbioturbation during cold periods. This
observation strengthens the hypothesis of intense water circulation during colder times. Thin-section image analysis provides
crucial information for deciphering lacustrine records and their regional and palaeoclimatic significance.

Sandy sediments of continental shelves and most beaches are often thought of as geochemical deserts because they are usually poor in organic matter and other reactive substances. The present study focuses on analyses of dissolved biogenic compounds of surface seawater and pore waters of Aquitanian coastal beach sediments. To quantitatively assess the biogeochemical reactions, we collected pore waters at low tide on tidal cross-shore transects unaffected by freshwater inputs. We recorded temperature, salinity, oxygen saturation state, and nutrient concentrations. These parameters were compared to the values recorded in the seawater entering the interstitial environment during floods. Cross-shore topography and position of piezometric level at low tide were obtained from kinematics GPS records. Residence time of pore waters was estimated by a tracer approach, using dissolved silica concentration and kinetics estimate of quartz dissolution with seawater. Kinetics parameters were based on dissolved silica concentration monitoring during 20-day incubations of sediment with seawater. We found that seawater that entered the sediment during flood tides remained up to seven tidal cycles within the interstitial environment. Oxygen saturation of seawater was close to 100%, whereas it was as low as 80% in pore waters. Concentrations of dissolved nutrients were higher in pore waters than in seawater. These results suggest that aerobic respiration occurred in the sands. We propose that mineralised organic matter originated from planktonic material that infiltrated the sediment with water during flood tides. Therefore, the sandy tidal sediment of the Aquitanian coast is a biogeochemical reactor that promotes or accelerates remineralisation of coastal pelagic primary production. Mass balance calculations suggest that this single process supplies about 37 kmol of nitrate and 1.9 kmol of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) to the 250-km long Aquitanian coast during each semi-diurnal tidal cycle. It represents about 1.5% of nitrate and 5% of DIP supplied by the nearest estuary. 相似文献

Target factors aim at setting criteria to select foreign vessels that should be inspected by port state control authorities. Although a relative consensus exists on the main factors to consider in selecting vessels, the weight to be given to these factors is still unclear. Using data on 26 515 PSC inspections that took place within the Indian Ocean MoU region from 2002 to 2006, we investigate the determinants of the number of deficiencies and of the probability of detention. Our results show that the main contributors to detention are the age of the vessel at inspection (40%), the recognised organization (31%) and the place where the inspection occurs (17%). Also, differences in detention rates amongst various inspecting authorities are essentially explained by differences in the characteristics of vessels calling in a specific country rather than by differences in the way inspections are done. 相似文献

We present high-resolution isotopic records and cathodoluminescence studies of recently dead and live bivalve specimens from
cold seeps, in an attempt to reconstruct environmental conditions during organism growth, and thereby the possible variability
of fluid-venting activity at the seafloor. Shells of the burrowing lucinid Myrtea aff. amorpha were collected at three localities near actively venting methane seeps in the Eastern Mediterranean deep sea, using the Nautile
submersible during two French oceanographic cruises: from the Kazan mud volcano, in the vicinity of the Anaximander mounts
(MEDINAUT cruise, 1998), and from the central pockmark province and the Amon mud volcano of the Nile deep-sea fan (NAUTINIL
cruise, 2003). The oxygen and carbon isotope compositions of 18 shells from the various localities, and also from different
sites at the same locality show a rather strong scatter (1.8 < δ
18O‰ < 3.4; −10.2 < δ
13C‰ < 2.2), and values lower than those expected for carbonate precipitated at equilibrium with present-day bottom waters.
This means that warm methane-rich fluids were mixed with bottom seawater during precipitation of shell carbonates. We have
tried to determine ontogenetic age of two shells by using cathodoluminescence as a sclerochronological proxy, because the
direct counting of carbonate increments was not possible in these specimens. There is a relatively good correspondence between
cathodoluminescence trends and oxygen isotope profiles that might support the link between manganese incorporation during
growth and temperature. Eight specimens of lucinid shells were selected for high-resolution isotopic profiling. A few shells
exhibit decreasing δ
18O and δ
13C values from the umbo to the actively growing ventral shell margin, which can be attributed to the commonly observed physiologically
controlled deceleration of growth with increasing organism age, this metabolic effect corresponding to the increase of incorporation
of respiratory CO2. A few shells exhibit high-frequency δ
18O variations with an amplitude of about 1.5‰ that might be related to temperature variations controlled by fluid-venting activity.
One shell from the pockmark province of the Nile deep-sea fan records a strong, sharp δ
13C decrease of about 9‰, and extending over a 5-mm interval in the shell that can be related to a major methane release event.
Another shell from the Kazan mud volcano exhibits a progressive increase of δ
13C values from −10‰ to 0‰ with age, which might indicate decreasing methane flow throughout the organism’s life. This study
has demonstrated that bivalve shells from deep-sea cold seeps represent good indicators of variability in seepage activity
of methane-rich fluids, at various scales in both space and time. Although the precise chronology of the observed events was
not established, because shell growth rate is not known in this case, this remains a priority for future studies in such environments. 相似文献

Studies designed to describe the structure of soft bottom meiobenthic communities have used diverse sorting methods, thus making the comparison of results difficult. This study compared sorting specimens using the manual and centrifuge density gradient sorting methods, for two deep-sea depth zones [continental slope (1630–1860 m) and abyssal plain (3720–3830 m)] in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. The manual sorting method produced more taxonomic groups and higher abundance and biomass values, compared to the differential density Ludox-centrifuge sorting method. The results obtained from the two sorting methods suggest that distribution patterns of deep-sea meiofaunal samples can be an artefacts of the sorting. 相似文献

The diurnal cycle of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) hasbeen documented on 8 August 1998 in the framework of the Étude et Simulation de la QUalité de l'air en Ile-de-France (ESQUIF) experiment that took place in the Paris area. The ABL structure was documented by means of a ground-based lidar, surface meteorological stations and soundings. The interaction between the residual layer and the convective boundary layer is investigated using the collected data as well as mesoscale modelling. As opposed to the generally accepted concept, we find evidence of entrainment at the top ofthe residual layer. High temporal simulations of the 8 August 1998 casemade with the mesoscale atmospheric model Meso-NH also show evidenceof mixing at the top of the residual layer (RL). This mixing is believed to be related to the presence of convective (gravity) waves in the RL. 相似文献

The present study involves using the Canadian Climate Centre (CCC) climate change scenario to evaluate the impacts of a CO2-induced climate change on agriculture in Québec and vicinity. Climate change using the CCC General Circulation Model (GCM) data are fed into a crop model (FAO) so as to gauge the changes in agroclimatic factors such as growing season length and growing degree days, and subsequently potential yield changes for a variety of cereal (C3 and C4), leguminous, oleaginous, vegetable and special crops, for twelve major agricultural regions in southern Québec. Our results show that depending upon the agricultural zone and crop type, yields may increase (ex. corn and sorghum by 20%) or decrease (ex. wheat and soybean by 20 to 30%). Also, these crop yield changes appear to be related to acceleration in maturation rates, mainly to change in moisture stress and to shifts in optimal thermal growth conditions. These possible shifts in agricultural production potentials would solicit the formulation of appropriate adaptation strategies. 相似文献
