Photo‐identification has been established as a helpful tool in cetacean research. However, no study to date has attempted to apply this method to short‐beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis L.). We present here the results of two studies that were conducted concurrently in Mercury Bay and the Hauraki Gulf on the north‐east coast of New Zealand's North Island. Methods for distinguishing between individual dolphins are discussed. Sighting records of recognisable individuals indicate that some common dolphins move between Mercury Bay and the Hauraki Gulf (100 km distance), as well as between Mercury Bay and Whakatane (200 km distance). Common dolphin abundance and site fidelity appeared to be greater in the Hauraki Gulf than in Mercury Bay. A selection of photographs of distinct individuals is presented to allow future studies to compare their sighting records to ours, which may help establish the extent of home ranges, site fidelity, and possibly even longevity for common dolphins. 相似文献

The US Census provides the primary source of spatially explicit social data, but changing block boundaries complicate analyses of housing growth over time. We compared procedures for reconciling housing density data between 1990 and 2000 census block boundaries in order to assess the sensitivity of analytical methods to estimates of housing growth in Oregon. Estimates of housing growth varied substantially and were sensitive to the method of interpolation. With no processing and areal‐weighted interpolation, more than 35% of the landscape changed; 75–80% of this change was due to decline in housing density. This decline was implausible, however, because housing structures generally persist over time. Based on aggregated boundaries, 11% of the landscape changed, but only 4% experienced a decline in housing density. Nevertheless, the housing density change map was almost twice as coarse spatially as the 2000 housing density data. We also applied a dasymetric approach to redistribute 1990 housing data into 2000 census boundaries under the assumption that the distribution of housing in 2000 reflected the same distribution as in 1990. The dasymetric approach resulted in conservative change estimates at a fine resolution. All methods involved some type of trade‐off (e.g. analytical difficulty, data resolution, magnitude or bias in direction of change). However, our dasymetric procedure is a novel approach for assessing housing growth over changing census boundaries that may be particularly useful because it accounts for the uniquely persistent nature of housing over time. 相似文献

We have designed and calibrated a piston-cylinder cell assembly suitable for conductingin situ measurements of enthalpies of phase transitions at elevated pressures by heat-flux differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The high-pressure DSC detector consists of a Pt-Pt13%Rh thermopile wrapped around a frame of fired pyrophyllite. Four thermocouple junctions, arranged radially around the sample capsule, are connected in series, with four reference thermocouple junctions located 3–4 mm above the sample and embedded in thermally inert ceramic. A W-W25%Re control thermocouple is situated directly above the top of the sample; the whole detector assembly is enclosed in a 1.5 mm thick cylindrical ceramic sleeve located at the center of a 8–10 mm long hot-zone in the tapered graphite furnace. Using this detector design and cell assembly, we have observed the thermal signal associated with the fusion of Au at 0.5 and 1.2 GPa, and have calculated a calibration factor (K) for this detector based on the gold melting curve ofMirwald andKennedy (1979). Detector sensitivity decreases by a factor of four over this pressure-temperature interval. The reproducibility of the enthalpy of fusion of gold at 0.5 GPa suggests that detector geometry is reproducible from one experiment to the next, and thus confirms the viability of this particular detector design for quantitative DSC measurements. Subsequent experiments will assess the dependence of (K) on temperature and pressure by measuring the enthalpies of fusion of additional metals (e.g., Ag, Cu, Al, Ge) and salts (e.g., NaCl, CsCl). 相似文献

The enthalpies of formation of a number of crystalline silicates from the oxides at 986 K were determined by oxide melt solution calorimetry. The values of ΔH°f, 986, in kcal/mol, are as follows: MgCaSi2O6, ? 34.3 ± 0.4; CoCaSi2O6, ? 26.7 ± 0.5; NiCaSi2O6, ? 27.1 ± 0.5; MnSiO3, ? 6.3 ± 0.3; Mn2SiO4, ? 12.2 ± 0.3. In addition, for MnSiO3 (rhodonite)→ MnSiO3 (pyroxmangite), ΔH°986 = + 0.06 ± 0.33kcal/mol and for MgCaSi2O6 (diopside) = MgCaSi2O6 (glass), ΔH°986 = + 21.0 ± 0.3 kcal/ mol. For hedenbergite, FeCaSi2O6, ΔG°1350 = ?25.6 ± 1.5 kcal/mol. In terms of pyroxene phase equilibria and crystal chemistry, our thermochemical data support the generally accepted crystallographic arguments that (a) the C2/c clinopyroxene structure increases in stability with decreasing size of the ion occupying the Ml site in the MCaSi2O6 series, and (b) the energy (and enthalpy) differences between orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and pyroxenoid structures are generally quite small and often less than 500 cal/mol in magnitude. 相似文献

The δ13C values of 23 unevenly spaced guano samples from a 17-cm long clay sediment profile in Gaura cu Musc? Cave (GM), in SW Romania, made it possible to preliminarily characterize the Medieval Warm Period summer hydroclimate regime. The beginning of the sequence (AD 990) was rather wet for more than a century, before becoming progressively drier. After a brief, yet distinct wet period around AD 1170, drier conditions, with a possible shift from C3 to a mixed C3-dominated/C4 type vegetation (2 ‰ lower δ13C values), prevailed for almost half a century before the climate became colder and wetter at the onset of the Little Ice Age, when bats left the cave. The guano-inferred wet and dry intervals from the GM Cave are mirrored by changes in the color and amount of clay accumulated in the cave. They also agree well with reconstructions based on pollen and charcoal from peat bogs and δ13C and δ18O on speleothems from other Romanian sites. Overall, these results indicate that the δ13C of bat guano can provide a sensitive record of the short-term coupling between local/regional climate and the plant–insect–bat–guano system. 相似文献

A 10.5 m core from Changeable Lake in the Severnaya Zemlya Archipelago just north of the Taymyr Peninsula intersects ca. 30 cm of diamicton at its base, interpreted as a basal till. Because the upper 10.13 m of this core consists of non‐glacial sediments, a maximum numeric age for these non‐glacial sediments would provide a clear lower limit to the timing of the last glaciation in the area of Changeable Lake. Radiocarbon (14C) dating of several materials from this core yielded widely scattered results. Consequently we applied photonic dating to sediments above the diamicton. The experimental single‐aliquot‐regenerative (SAR) dose fine‐grain method was applied to two samples, using the ‘double SAR’ approach. With one exception, these fine‐grain SAR results and the results of application of the SAR method to sand‐sized quartz grains from two samples, at ca. 9.95 m and ca. 10.05 m depth, are discrepant with age estimates from the multi‐aliquot infrared‐photon‐stimulated luminescence (IR‐PSL) method applied to fine grains. Multi‐aliquot IR‐PSL dating of 10 samples produces ages increasing monotonically from ca. 4 ka at 2 m to 53 ± 4 ka at 9.97 m. These self‐consistent multi‐aliquot IR‐PSL ages, along with limiting 14C ages of >47 ka at ca. 10 m, provide direct evidence that glacial ice did not advance over this lake basin during the Last Glacial Maximum, and thus delimit the northeastern margin of the Barents–Kara Sea ice‐sheet to somewhere west of this archipelago. In Mediterranean regions, the marked climatic seasonality and uneven precipitation distribution complicate the application of isotope mass balances to obtain meaningful basin-wide annual average evaporation rates. In the present study, a mass balance approach carried out on the Tavignanu River watershed in Corsica (France), showed unrealistic evaporation rate estimates: 10% for 2017–2018 and 1% for 2018–2019. This suggests that not only does evaporation alter the seasonal isotopic composition in the river, but that there is complex variability of the dominant water reservoirs contributing to the streamflow. Therefore, we propose a modified mass balance approach, including monthly quantifications of different water sources contributing to the river discharge. This allows the discrimination of isotopic variation occurring by evaporation from that originating by mixing processes. By applying this modified approach, we estimated evaporation rates on the Tavignanu River watershed that were in good agreement with results obtained by hydrological modelling: 40% for 2017–2018 and 46% for 2018–2019, respectively. An uncertainty analysis showed that evaporation rates obtained with the modified isotopic approach are close to those obtained with the non-modified approach. Therefore, we recommend using this modified isotope mass balance approach to estimate evaporation rates in such regions as the Mediterranean with high seasonality in hydrological processes. 相似文献
