The Mesoscale Alpine Programme’s Riviera project investigated the turbulence structure and related exchange processes in an
Alpine valley by combining a detailed experimental campaign with high-resolution numerical modelling. The present contribution
reviews published material on the Riviera Valley’s boundary layer structure and discusses new material on the near-surface
turbulence structure. The general conclusion of the project is that despite the large spatial variability of turbulence characteristics
and the crucial influence of topography at all scales, the physical processes can accurately be understood and modelled. Nevertheless,
many of the “text book characteristics” like the interaction between the valley and slope wind systems or the erosion of the
nocturnal valley inversion need reconsideration, at least for small non-ideal valleys like the Riviera Valley. The project
has identified new areas of research such as post-processing methods for turbulence variables in complex terrain and new approaches
for the surface energy balance when advection is non-negligible. The exchange of moisture and heat between the valley atmosphere
and the free troposphere is dominated by local “secondary” circulations due to the curvature of the valley axis. Because many
curved valleys exist, and operational models still have rather poor resolution, parameterization of these processes may be

Coastal eutrophication poses an increasing risk to ecosystem health due to enhanced nutrient loading to the global coastline. Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) represents a significant pathway for nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) transport to the coast, but diffusive SGD transport is difficult to monitor directly, given the low flux rates and expansive discharge areas. In contrast, focused SGD from intertidal springs can potentially be sampled and directly gauged, providing unique insight into SGD and associated contaminant transport. Basin Head is a coastal lagoon in Prince Edward Island, Canada that is a federally protected ecosystem. Nitrate-nitrogen is conveyed from agricultural fields in the contributing watershed to the eutrophic lagoon via intertidal groundwater springs and groundwater-dominated tributaries. We used several field methods to characterize groundwater discharge, nutrient loading, and in-channel mixing associated with intertidal springs. The tributaries and intertidal springs were gauged and sampled to estimate a representative summer nitrate load to the lagoon. Our analysis revealed that NO3-N export to the lagoon through tributaries and springs throughout summer 2023 was on average 401 kg N/month, with the combined spring loading comparable in magnitude to the combined tributary loading. We collected thermal infrared and visual imagery using drone surveys and found spatial overlap between cold-water plumes from the spring discharge and macroalgae blooms, indicating the local thermal and ecosystem impacts of the focused SGD. We also mapped the electrical resistivity (salinity) distribution in the water column around one large spring with electromagnetic geophysics at different tidal stages to reveal the three-dimensional spring plume dynamics. Results showed that the fresher spring water floated above the saline lagoon water with the brackish plume oriented in the direction of the tidal current. Collectively, our multi-pronged field investigations help elucidate the hydrologic, thermal, and nutrient dynamics of intertidal springs and the cascading ecosystem impacts. 相似文献

The structure, symmetry and origin of the incommensurately modulated OS phase of tridymite (SiO2) and its lock-in to the OP three-fold superlattice structure are discussed in a computational study. The structure of the
OS phase (which has not been determined experimentally) is deduced as the only geometrically possible structure derived from

The distribution of Mg, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni among olivine, orthopyroxene, calcic clinopyroxene and liquid can be described by exchange reactions of the form: M (phase A) + Mg (phase B) = M (phase B) + Mg (phase A). The thermochemical data predict the observed partitioning within the limits of error of both sets of data when assumptions of ideal solid solution are used, except for Mn-Mg exchange. Because ΔS and ΔV for these exchange reactions are generally small, KD varies relatively little with temperature and pressure, although individual ion distribution coefficients (D values) are more sensitive to these variables and to changing liquid composition.Trace elements present at the ppm level can enter crystals in normal lattice sites, can participate in point defect equilibria and can enter various defect sites present metastably in the crystal as a result of its P,T history. Enthalpies of formation of ferrihydrite and schwertmannite were measured by acid solution calorimetry in 5 N HCl at 298 K. The published thermodynamic data for these two phases and ε-Fe2O3 were evaluated, and the best thermodynamic data for the studied compounds were selected.Ferrihydrite is metastable in enthalpy with respect to α-Fe2O3 and liquid water by 11.5 to 14.7 kJ•mol−1 at 298.15 K. The less positive enthalpy corresponds to 6-line ferrihydrite, and the higher one, indicating lesser stability, to 2-line ferrihydrite. In other words, ferrihydrite samples become more stable with increasing crystallinity. The best thermodynamic data set for ferrihydrite of composition Fe(OH)3 was selected by using the measured enthalpies and (1) requiring ferrihydrite to be metastable with respect to fine-grained lepidocrocite; (2) requiring ferrihydrite to have entropy higher than the entropy of hypothetical, well-crystalline Fe(OH)3; and (3) considering published estimates of solubility products of ferrihydrite. The ΔG°f for 2-line ferrihydrite is best described by a range of −708.5±2.0 to −705.2±2.0 kJ•mol−1, and ΔG°f for 6-line ferrihydrite by −711.0±2.0 to −708.5±2.0 kJ•mol−1.A published enthalpy measurement by acid calorimetry of ε-Fe2O3 was re-evaluated, arriving at ΔH°f (ε-Fe2O3) = −798.0±6.6 kJ•mol−1. The standard entropy (S°) of ε-Fe2O3 was considered to be equal to S° (γ-Fe2O3) (93.0±0.2 J•K−1•mol−1), giving ΔG°f (ε-Fe2O3) = −717.8±6.6 kJ•mol−1. ε-Fe2O3 thus appears to have no stability field, and it is metastable with respect to most phases in the Fe2O3-H2O system which is probably the reason why this phase is rare in nature.Enthalpies of formation of two schwertmannite samples are: ΔH°f (FeO(OH)0.686(SO4)0.157•0.972H2O) = −884.0±1.3 kJ•mol−1, ΔH°f (FeO(OH)0.664(SO4)0.168•1.226H2O) = −960.7±1.2 kJ•mol−1. When combined with an entropy estimate, these data give Gibbs free energies of formation of −761.3 ± 1.3 and −823.3 ± 1.2 kJ•mol−1 for the two samples, respectively. These ΔGf° values imply that schwertmannite is thermodynamically favored over ferrihydrite over a wide range of pH (2-8) when the system contains even small concentration of sulfate. The stability relations of the two investigated samples can be replicated by schwertmannite of the “ideal” composition FeO(OH)3/4(SO4)1/8 with ΔG°f = −518.0±2.0 kJ•mol−1. 相似文献

Nutrient and oxygen data collected in the southern Aegean Sea (Cretan Sea) and the straits of the Cretan Arc, during the four seasonal PELAGOS cruises in 1994–1995, are investigated and compared with data collected from 1987 to 1992 within the same area. During the cruises of the PELAGOS Project, nutrient enrichment of the intermediate layers of the Cretan Sea was observed, as a result of intrusion of ‘nutrient-rich, oxygen-poor’ Transition Mediterranean Water (TMW) compensating the Cretan Deep Water (CDW) outflow. TMW occupied the intermediate layers of the entire Cretan Sea. The concentrations of nutrients within this layer were often two times higher than those observed in the same area during previous studies undertaken before 1992 (increase 2.5 μmol/l of nitrate, 0.05 μmol/l of phosphate and 2.5μmol/l of silicate). The decrease of oxygen in this layer is about 0.8ml/l (35 μmol/l). Outflow of CDW occurs principally through the Antikithira and Kassos Straits (the two deeper straits of the Cretan Arc); it results in an increase of oxygen content but a decrease in the nutrient content of water in the deep and bottom layers outside the Cretan Sea. The major mesoscale features in the area have a major influence of the distributions and exchanges of nutrients and oxygen through the straits of the Cretan Arc. The surface and the intermediate layers were richer in nutrients and poorer in oxygen in spring (March 1994), than in autumn (September 1994). 相似文献

We report the results of a study of the magnetic properties of basalts recovered from the axis and from 0.7 m.y. old crust at 21° N and 19°30 S on the East Pacific Rise as well as from the 9°03 N overlapping spreading centers. The natural remanent magnetization of the samples from 21° N and 19°30 S decreases from the axis to 0.7 m.y. old crust as a result of low-temperature oxidation. In addition, the magnetic properties of the samples from the 21° N sites indicate that: (1) the magnetic susceptibility and the Koenigsberger ratio decrease with low-temperature alteration, (2) the Curie temperature, the median demagnetizing field and the remanent coercivity increase with maghemitization, (3) the saturation magnetization measured at room temperature does not change significantly with age. The magnetic properties of the basalt samples from the 9°03 N overlapping spreading centers indicate the presence of a high magnetization zone at the tip of the eastern spreading center. This high magnetization zone is the result of the high percentage of unaltered, fine-grained titanomagnetites present in the samples. These measurements are consistent with the results of the three-dimensional inversion of the magnetic field over the 9°03 N overlapping system [Sempere et al., 1984] as well as with detailed tectonic and geochemical investigations of overlapping spreading centers (Sempere and Macdonald, 1986a; Langmuir et al., 1986; Natland et al., 1986). The high magnetization zone appears to be the result of the eruption of highly fractionated basalts enriched in iron associated with the propagation of one of the limbs of the overlapping system into older lithosphere and not just to rapid decay, due to low-temperature oxidation, of the initially high magnetization of pillows extruded in the neovolcanic zone. 相似文献

Moving foreign human and financial capital through landed property is not a new phenomenon in Sydney. It is a recurring geopolitical strategy that is replete with intercultural tension and deep colonial roots. In contemporary Australia, there is an assumption in public policy and media rhetoric that there is a high level of public concern about foreign investment. However, there is little empirical data that examines public perceptions. In this study, we are interested in whether the dominant voices in this debate represent broad public views about this issue. We sought to fill this gap by conducting a survey of almost 900 Sydney residents, looking at their perceptions of foreign and Chinese investment. We find high levels of public concern and discontent about foreign investment amongst Sydneysiders, with Chinese investors being a key target of this discontent. In the context of high housing prices in Sydney, there were widely held concerns about housing affordability. Survey respondents had a sophisticated understanding of what influences house prices, but with an overemphasis on the role of foreign investment. There is a general lack of support for policy that encourages foreign investment, and a lack of confidence in how the government is regulating foreign investment. Half of our participants reported that they would not welcome Chinese foreign investment in their suburb. 相似文献
