In order to estimate the deposition rate of extraterrestrial material onto a manganese crust in a search for supernova debris,
we analyzed the contents of 10Be, 230Th, 231Pa, and 239,240Pu in a sample of manganese crust collected from the North Pacific Ocean. On the basis of the depth profile of 10Be, the growth rate of the manganese crust was determined to be 2.3 mm Myr−1. The uptake rates of 10Be, 230Th, and 231Pa onto the manganese crust were estimated to be 0.22–0.44%, 0.11–0.73%, and 1.4–4.5%, respectively, as compared to the deposition
rates onto the deep-sea sediments near the sampling station, while that for 239,240Pu was 0.14% as compared to the total inventory of seawater and sediment column. Assuming that sinking particles represent
0.11–4.5% of the uptake rates, the deposition rate of extraterrestrial material onto the manganese crust was estimated to
be 2–800 μg cm−2Myr−1 according to the uptake of 10Be onto the manganese crust. Further, our estimate is similar to the value of 9–90 μg cm− 2Myr−1 obtained using the integrated global production rate of 10Be and the deposition rate of 10Be onto the manganese crust. 相似文献
The floor of the western Solomon Sea (for new bathymetric map see inside back cover of this issue) is dominated by the arched and ridged basement of the Solomon Sea Basin, the partly-sediment-filled New Britain Trench, and a more completely filled trench, the Trobriand Trough. There is a deep basin where the trenches join (149° Embayment), and a silled basin west of the New Britain Trench (Finsch Deep). Submarine canyons descend from the west and south to the 149° Embayment. Abyssal fans and plains are structurally defined and locally disturbed by young faults. Probable submerged pinnacle reefs stand in water depths as great as 1,200 m. 相似文献
Composite sea surface dynamic heights (CSSDH) are calculated from both sea surface dynamic heights that are derived from altimetric data of ERS-2 and mean sea surface that is calculated by a numerical model. The CSSDH are consistent with sea surface temperature obtained by satellite and observed water temperature. Assuming the geostrophic balance, sea surface current velocities are calculated. It is found that temporal and spatial variations of sea surface circulation are considerably strong. In order to examine the characteristics of temporal and spatial variation of current pattern, EOF analysis is carried out with use of the CSSDH for 3.5 years. The spatial and temporal variations of mode 1 indicate the strength or weakness of sea surface circulation over the entire Japan Sea associated with seasonal variation of volume transport through the Tsushima Strait. The spatial and temporal variations of mode 2 mostly indicate the temporal variation of the second branch of the Tsushima Warm Current and the East Korean Warm Current. It is suggested that this variation is possibly associated with the seasonal variation of volume transport through the west channel of the Tsushima Strait. Variations of mode 3 indicate the interannual variability in the Yamato Basin. 相似文献
Phosphorus dynamics in Tokyo Bay waters were investigated along with other oceanographic variables. Seasonal variations of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and particulate phosphorus (PP) are inversely correlated with each other, and reflect variation in biological activity. A high concentration of PP in summer surface waters is caused by high primary production. The PP settled in the deeper layer is decomposed, and orthophosphate is regenerated within the water column and in sediments. Even during summer stratification period, the regenerated orthophosphate is occasionally advected upward by wind-induced water mixing and contributes to phytoplankton growth in the upper layer. Some dissolved organic phosphorus is producedin situ from PP, but it may be rapidly decomposed in the water column. The ratios of Cchlorophylla and CN in particulate matter suggest that phytoplankton in the summer surface waters of Tokyo Bay are limited neither by nitrogen nor by phosphorus. The PN ratio in particulate matter varies substantially but it is positively correlated with the ambient concentration of DIP. Phytoplankton take up and store phosphorus within their cells when ambient DIP exceeds their demand. An abundance of total phosphorus in the summer water column can be attributed to increased discharge of river waters, although enhanced release of orthophosphate from anoxic sediments cannot be discounted. 相似文献
Barotolerant bacterium was isolated from sediment sample which was obtained from the depth of 4033 m in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench. The physiological property, growth characteristics and fatty acid composition were examined. The strain was a psychrotrophic and barotolerant bacterium, and was identified as species in the genusAlteromonas. The fatty acids of the strain were from C12 to C18. As the growth pressure increased, the portion of unsaturated fatty acid in membrane fraction increased due to an increase in the portion of C171 and C181, while the relative portion of C160 and C161 decreased. On the other hand, as the growth temperature decreased, the portion of unsaturated fatty acid increased due to the increase in the portion of C161 and C181. 相似文献
The Global Imager (GLI) aboard the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite-II (ADEOS-II) made global observations from 2 April
2003 to 24 October 2003. In cooperation with several institutes and scientists, we obtained quality controlled match-ups between
GLI products and in-situ data, 116 for chlorophyll-a concentration (CHLA), 249 for normalized water-leaving radiance (nLw) at 443 nm, and 201 for
aerosol optical thickness at 865 nm (Tau_865) and Angstrom exponent between 520 and 865 nm (Angstrom). We evaluated the GLI
ocean color products and investigated the causes of errors using the match-ups. The median absolute percentage differences
(MedPD) between GLI and in-situ data were 14.1–35.7% for nLws at 380–565 nm, 52.5–74.8% nLws at 625–680 nm, 47.6% for Tau_865, 46.2% for Angstrom, and 46.6%
for CHLA, values that are comparable to the ocean-color products of other sensors. We found that some errors in GLI products
are correlated with observational conditions; nLw values were underestimated when nLw at 680 nm was high, CHLA was underestimated
in absorptive aerosol conditions, and Tau_865 was overestimated in sunglint regions. The error correlations indicate that
we need to improve the retrievals of the optical properties of absorptive aerosols and seawater and sea surface reflection
for further applications, including coastal monitoring and the combined use of products from multiple sensors. 相似文献
The Vertically Generalized Production Model (VGPM) was verified by the primary production data of the Sagami Bay, Japan. The
VGPM with open ocean parameters including PBopt, maximum primary production per unit of chlorophyll a in the water column, explained only 40% of the variability of integrated primary production. Formulations of the open ocean
PBopt showed no correlation with in situPBopt. Adjustment of the parameters of chlorophyll a and temperature dependent PBopt improved the estimation of integrated primary production to 47% of the variation. Vertical integration parameters of VGPM
also have to be adjusted to improve the estimation. Integrated primary production calculated with a stronger light dependency
and with the adjusted PBopt model can explain 74% of the variation. This model was used to estimate primary production of the Sagami Bay during 2003
with satellite data. In situ measurements on cloudy days indicate that the use of satellite data from sunny days only overestimates primary production. 相似文献
Spatial and temporal variations in the vertical fluxes of amino acids and hexosamine were studied at coastal sites in the
south of the Chukchi Sea, Otsuchi Bay, and the center and the entrance of Funka Bay. Amino acid fluxes were higher in the
upper trap than in the lower trap material, but hexosamine fluxes were opposite to amino acid fluxes. The ratios between protein
amino acids (Asp, Glu and Arg) and their decomposition products (β-Ala, γ-Aba and Orn) indicate that the labile organic matter
was more abundant in the upper traps than in the lower ones and increased during periods of enhanced amino acid fluxes. The
ratios of Ser/Gly did not vary temporally and spatially and were nearly constant, indicating that Ser and Gly were preserved
in a stable form within sinking particles. Hexosamine/amino acid ratios of these particles were higher in the lower sediment
trap than in the upper trap material. This implies that the sinking particles derived from zooplankton are relatively more
abundant in deep layers than in the surface layer in the water column. We suggest that the difference in amino acid flux and
the composition between the upper and lower trap material is influenced by the processes of microbial decomposition and zooplankton
consumption of sinking particulate organic matter.

We have investigated crustal deformations associated with the 1986 eruption of Izu-Oshima volcano, Japan, which was accompanied by an intensive fissure eruption. Two fissure crater chains, with NW-SE trend were created in the northern part of the caldera and on its northwestern flank. Their trend is consistent with the direction of compressive stress in this region. Depression of > 30 cm in the central zone including the caldera, and in the northwestern and southeastern parts in the island, was detected by precise leveling. On the other hand, uplifts up to 20 cm in the northeastern and southwestern parts were observed. Tide observations revealed that the Okada tide station, the leveling datum in Izu-Oshima, may have subsided by 5 cm after the eruption. An 1 m opening of fissure craters was detected by distance measurements of the baselines which cross fissure craters. Horizontal displacements obtained by reoccupation of control points showed a symmetrical pattern which was consistent with the opening of fissure craters. Anomalous strain changes were also observed in the surrounding regions—contractions were observed in the Boso and the Miura peninsula, northeast of Izu-Oshima, and extensions in the Izu peninsula.
To interpret these crustal deformations, a model which consists of a nearly vertical tensile fault and a deflation source is presented. The tensile fault lies parallel to the fissures and is divided into two parts according to depth. The deeper part of the tensile fault is 12 km long, 10 km wide, and has 2 km burial depth and 2.7 m opening displacement. The shallower part, which may represent the fissure craters, is 4 km long, 2 km wide, and the amount of opening is estimated to be 1 m. However, the deflation source may be located at a depth of 10 km beneath the northwestern flank of the caldera and depression just above the source is estimated to be 30 cm. A deflation source is required to explain the subsidence at the Okada tide station and the extension in the Izu peninsula. This model suggests that the eruption might have released tensile stresses in and around the Izu region which result from bending of the subducting Philippine Sea plate. 相似文献
