The effects of dry summer ambient temperature on some physiological and productive responses were studied in an exotic European breed (Holstein–Friesian) and a local zebu breed (Butana ecotype) of cattle in Sudan. Rectal temperature and respiration rate were positively correlated, and dry matter intake and milk yield were negatively correlated with variation in ambient temperature. However, significant adverse effects on high ambient temperature were only observed in the exotic breed.  相似文献

Abstract Multi- and single-channel seismic profiles are used to investigate the structural evolution of back-arc rifting in the intra-oceanic Izu-Bonin Arc. Hachijo and Aoga Shima Rifts, located west of the Izu-Bonin frontal arc, are bounded along-strike by structural and volcanic highs west of Kurose Hole, North Aoga Shima Caldera and Myojin Sho arc volcanoes. Zig-zag and curvilinear faults subdivide the rifts longitudinally into an arc margin (AM), inner rift, outer rift and proto-remnant arc margin (PRA). Hachijo Rift is 65 km long and 20–40 km wide. Aoga Shima Rift is 70 km long and up to 45 km wide. Large-offset border fault zones, with convex and concave dip slopes and uplifted rift flanks, occur along the east (AM) side of the Hachijo Rift and along the west (PRA) side of the Aoga Shima Rift. No cross-rift structures are observed at the transfer zone between these two regions; differential strain may be accommodated by interdigitating rift-parallel faults rather than by strike- or oblique-slip faults. In the Aoga Shima Rift, a 12 km long flank uplift, facing the flank uplift of the PRA, extends northeast from beneath the Myojin Knoll Caldera. Fore-arc sedimentary sequences onlap this uplift creating an unconformity that constrains rift onset to ~1-2Ma. Estimates of extension (~3km) and inferred age suggest that these rifts are in the early syn-rift stage of back-arc formation. A two-stage evolution of early back-arc structural evolution is proposed: initially, half-graben form with synthetically faulted, structural rollovers (ramping side of the half-graben) dipping towards zig-zagging large-offset border fault zones. The half-graben asymmetry alternates sides along-strike. The present ‘full-graben’ stage is dominated by rift-parallel hanging wall collapse and by antithetic faulting that concentrates subsidence in an inner rift. Structurally controlled back-arc magmatism occurs within the rift and PRA during both stages. Significant complications to this simple model occur in the Aoga Shima Rift where the east-dipping half-graben dips away from the flank uplift along the PRA. A linear zone of weakness caused by the greater temperatures and crustal thickness along the arc volcanic line controls the initial locus of rifting. Rifts are better developed between the arc edifices; intrusions may be accommodating extensional strain adjacent to the arc volcanoes. Pre-existing structures have little influence on rift evolution; the rifts cut across large structural and volcanic highs west of the North Aoga Shima Caldera and Aoga Shima. Large, rift-elongate volcanic ridges, usually extruded within the most extended inner rift between arc volcanoes, may be the precursors of sea floor spreading. As extension continues, the fissure ridges may become spreading cells and propagate toward the ends of the rifts (adjacent to the arc volcanoes), eventually coalescing with those in adjacent rift basins to form a continuous spreading centre. Analysis of the rift fault patterns suggests an extension direction of N80°E ± 10° that is orthogonal to the trend of the active volcanic arc (N10°W). The zig-zag pattern of border faults may indicate orthorhombic fault formation in response to this extension. Elongation of arc volcanic constructs may also be developed along one set of the possible orthorhombic orientations. Border fault formation may modify the regional stress field locally within the rift basin resulting in the formation of rift-parallel faults and emplacement of rift-parallel volcanic ridges. The border faults dip 45–55° near the surface and the majority of the basin subsidence is accommodated by only a few of these faults. Distinct border fault reflections decreases dips to only 30° at 2.5 km below the sea floor (possibly flattening to near horizontal at 2.8 km although the overlying rollover geometry shows a deeper detachment) suggesting that these rifting structures may be detached at extremely shallow crustal levels.  相似文献

Summary Pre-Variscan basement in southern Poland is poorly exposed and thus known mostly from subsurface data. The availability of the latter is reviewed for terrains located between the Sudetes and the East European Platform. In these terrains the following relationships have been documented: Cadomian granitoids capped by Variscan flysch, Palaeozoic platform strata, Palaeozic folded and partly thermally altered successions, and low-grade metamorphic rocks overlain by Middle Cambrian strata. In view of their interrelationships the location of the Avalonia-Baltica suture in southeastern Poland is uncertain.  相似文献

There are about 50 galactic planetary nebulae know to have [WR] type nuclei. We have compared their nebular properties with those of the other planetary nebulae in the Galaxy. We have found that the nebular morphological types are similarly distributed in the two groups. Bipolar nebulae constitute only 20% of the total in each group. The distribution of the nebular electron densities and abundance ratios N/O, He/H and C/O are the same in the two groups. The only marked difference is that nebular expansion velocities are larger in the group of planetary nebulae with [WR] central stars. We argue that the WR phenomenon does not preferentially occur in more massive central stars of planetary nebulae, contrary to what has been suggested in some former studies. We demonstrate that, for most of the observed [WR] type objects, the WR phenomenon cannot be triggered by a late helium shell flash event.The results of our investigation are published inAstronomy & Astrophysics 303, 893 (1995) and in the proceedings of the 2nd International Colloquium on Hydrogen-deficient Stars, C.S. Mining in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland, induces tremors with magnitudes ranging up to 4.3. The recordings of mining tremors from the near-wave fiel and the far-wave field show different characteristics of ground motion.Knowledge of these characrteristics, has an enormous practical importance when solving the problems of resistance of underground workings against seismic impacts. The near-wave field is characterized by a domination of the high frequency components of motion, and the seismograms often are a single pulse Geomechanical interpretation of them leads to the conclusion that this pulse corresponds to a single exciting force. This fact is also reflected in the rockbursts: the potentially damaging ground motion which is restricted to the seismic source region.The seismometric data have shown that the peak particle velocities from a hypocentral distance of 200–300 m, resulted in more than 3 cm/s. The peak ground velocities appear to be dependent on stress drop , and peak particle velocities reaching 5 m/s may occur. The computational example proves that in a thick coal seam the pulse with the stress =1.8 MPa from the tremor at the short source distance can generate the rockburst.  相似文献

Ethno‐territoriality is an increasingly invoked term by those doing research on nationalism and ethnic conflict. Despite this, it has not been subject to detailed definitional and conceptual examination. This article develops a conceptual framework for thinking about ethno‐territoriality and ethnic conflict. It begins by briefly describing the relationship between territoriality, state sovereignty, and nationalist politics. I then provide a definition of ethno‐territoriality and outline a four‐part typology of the key elements of ethno‐territorial practice. Following this I discuss the role that ethno‐territoriality plays in the making of ethnic conflict.  相似文献

The development of location-aware technologies, such as smartphones, raises serious questions regarding locational privacy and the ethical use of geographic data. The degree to which these concepts are taught in undergraduate geographic information science (GISci) courses is unknown. A survey of GISci educators shows that issues of privacy and ethics are important in a GISci education. However, a large proportion of GISci educators are not concerned about the loss of locational privacy and many do not devote classes to the subject. Those not teaching the subject cite lack of course time and the need for more information.  相似文献

This study is Part II of a series that documents the development of a suite of calibration reference materials for in situ SIMS analysis of stable isotope ratios in Ca‐Mg‐Fe carbonates. Part I explored the effects of Fe2+ substitution on SIMS δ18O bias measured from the dolomite–ankerite solid solution series [CaMg(CO3)2–CaFe(CO3)2], whereas this complementary work explores the compositional dependence of SIMS δ13C bias (calibrated range: Fe# = 0.004–0.789, where Fe# = molar Fe/(Mg+Fe)). Under routine operating conditions for carbonate δ13C analysis at WiscSIMS (CAMECA IMS 1280), the magnitude of instrumental bias increased exponentially by 2.5–5.5‰ (session‐specific) with increasing Fe‐content in the dolomite structure, but appeared insensitive to minor Mn substitution [< 2.6 mole % Mn/(Ca+Mg+Fe+Mn)]. The compositional dependence of bias (i.e., the matrix effect) was expressed using the Hill equation, yielding calibration residual values ≤ 0.3‰ relative to CRM NBS‐19 for eleven carbonate reference materials (6‐μm‐diameter spot size measurements). Based on the spot‐to‐spot repeatability of a drift monitor material that ‘bracketed’ each set of ten sample‐spot analyses, the analytical precision was ± 0.6–1.2‰ (2s, standard deviations). The analytical uncertainty for individual sample analyses was approximated by combining the precision and calibration residual values (propagated in quadrature), suggesting an uncertainty of ± 1.0–1.5‰ (2s).  相似文献
