Abstract A general method for the calculation of the mean residence time of water in monomictic lakes of simple morphometry is worked out on the same physical assumptions as those made by Piontelli and Tonolli (1964). After a short outline of the mathematical foundation of the method, the numerical procedure is presented, on which the computer code for the determination of the mean residence time is based. Finally some examples of the application of the method to Lake Maggiore and to a lake of complex morphometry (Lake of Lugano) are presented and discussed. 相似文献

Detailed stratigraphic analyses of sediments deposited in Lake Botjärnen, a small boreal forest lake in the shield terrain of central Sweden, clearly reflect progressively increasing human impact on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems following settlement and establishment of an iron industry in the 17th century. Rising frequencies of pollen and spores from light-demanding plants provide evidence of extensive forest clearance for charcoal and timber production, which peaked in the early 20th century. An associated increase in catchment erosion is reflected by changing carbon and nitrogen elemental content and carbon–isotope composition of sediment organic matter and by increased magnetic susceptibility of the sediments. Records of air-borne pollutants (lead, zinc and sulphur) can be correlated to the development of local and regional mining and metal industry as inferred from historical accounts. Rapid recession of the iron industry led to re-forestation and recovery of the aquatic nutrient status to pre-industrial conditions over the past 100 years. The chronology of the sediment succession, which is based on 210Pb and 137Cs radionuclide data in combination with radiocarbon dating, is confirmed by historical lead pollution trends established for the region. 相似文献

Of the many topographic features, more specifically seamounts, that are ubiquitous in the ocean floor, we focus our attention on those with relatively shallow summits that can interact with wind-generated surface waves. Among these, especially relatively long waves crossing the oceans (swells) and stormy seas are able to affect the water column up to a considerable depth and therefore interact with these deep-sea features. We quantify this interaction through numerical experiments using a numerical wave model (SWAN), in which a simply shaped seamount is exposed to waves of different length. The results show a strong interaction that leads to significant changes in the wave field, creating wake zones and regions of large wave amplification. This is then exemplified in a practical case where we analyze the interaction of more realistic sea conditions with a very shallow rock in the Yellow Sea. Potentially important for navigation and erosion processes, mutatis mutandis, these results are also indicative of possible interactions with emerged islands and sand banks in shelf seas. 相似文献

In this study, seismic data from two wells (Pak G2-1 and Indus Marine-1C) and age diagnostic larger benthic foraminifera (LBF) within drill cuttings has been used for the first time to identify depositional sequences within the carbonates in the Offshore Indus Basin, Pakistan. The Offshore Indus is tectonically categorized as a passive continental margin where carbonates occur as shelf carbonates in the near offshore and on volcanic seamounts in deeper waters. Seismic data analysis has indicated the presence of minor faults and carbonate buildups above the igneous basement in the south. Patterns of the seismic reflections enabled definition of three seismic facies units identified as: Unit 1 basement, represented by chaotic, moderate amplitude reflection configuration; while parallel bedding and the drape of overlying strata is typical character of Unit 2, carbonate mound facies. The younger Miocene channels represent Unit 3. The diagnosis of Alveolina vredenburgi/cucumiformis biozone confirmed the Ilerdian (55–52 Ma) stage constituting a second order cycle of deposition for the Eocene carbonates (identified as Unit 2). The carbonate succession has been mainly attributed to an early highstand system tract (HST). The environmental conditions remained favorable leading to the development of keep-up carbonates similar to pinnacle buildups as a result of aggradation during late transgressive system tract and an early HST. The carbonate sequence in the south (Pak G2-1) is thicker and fossiliferous representing inner to middle shelf depths based on fauna compared to the Indus Marine-1C in the north, which is devoid of fossils. Three biozones (SBZ 5, SBZ 6 and SBZ 8) were identified based on the occurrence of LBF. The base of the SBZ 5 zone marks the larger foraminifera turnover and the Paleocene–Eocene (P–E) boundary. The LBF encountered in this study coincides with earlier findings for the P–E boundary. Our findings indicate that the entire Ilerdian stage ranges from 55.5 to 52 Ma that was the episode of warmer water conditions on the carbonate shelves leading to the diversification of K-strategist larger foraminifera. The larger foraminiferal assemblage encountered in this study confirms the findings. The possible indication of stratigraphic-combination traps, revealed as reflection terminations, make carbonate mounds in the south a potential exploration target. 相似文献

The main objective of the present study is to evaluate seismic attenuation relationships for the Campanian area (southern Italy) using the felt intensity report data obtained from comprehensive historical databases (DOM 4.1). We focused our attention on the Campania region because it is characterized by a high seismic hazard and risk, particularly in the Naples area and its suburbs. In order to derive an attenuation relationship for the area, we fitted the observed data by using several functions. We found that a linear plus logarithmic model gives the best fits for the data in the Campanian region. Most of the attenuation relationships proposed up to now for the Italian Peninsula have an isotropic behavior and do not always properly describe the macroseismic attenuation. Therefore, in order to check the possible dependence of the attenuation on the azimuth of the seismic rays, we divided our data set in octants and performed for each of them the same analysis we carried out for the whole data set. The obtained results differ from octant to octant and the differences, besides being associated with the source effects, could be interpreted as probably due to the existence of lateral variations in the lithological and physical features of the crust at different depths, which could affect the patterns of attenuation. 相似文献

An unsolved problem of regional importance for both the evolution and structure of the Northwest German Basin is the existence
or non-existence of the so-called Bramsche Massif. Explaining the nature of this massif and the cause of a related strong,
positive Bouguer anomaly (Bramsche Anomaly) is critical. In the study described here, we tested an existing “intrusion model”
against a newer “inversion model” in the southern Northwest German Basin. In the intrusion model, the strongly-positive Bouguer
anomaly represents the gravity effect of an intrusion at depths between 6 and 10 km. More recent interpretations invoke tectonic
inversion rather than intrusion to explain increased burial and the low level of hydrocarbon maturity found in boreholes.
We tested these different interpretations by constructing 3D forward density models to 15 km depth. The intrusion model was
updated and adjusted to incorporate recent data and we also modelled pre-Zechstein structures using different scenarios. The
final model has a very good fit between measured and modelled gravity fields. Based on currently available seismic and structural
models, as well as borehole density measurements, we show that the positive Bouguer anomaly cannot be modeled without a high-density,
intrusive-like body at depth. However, further in-sight into the crustal structures of the Bramsche region requires more detailed
investigations.

A Boolean delay equation (BDE) model is presented for the interdecadal Arctic and Greenland Sea climate cycle recently proposed by Mysak, Manak and Marsden. It is shown that 15- to 20-year oscillations can occur in the model for a variety of time delays in the BDEs. However, both the period and structure of the oscillations are sensitive to the initial conditions. In an extended model, in which the convection in the Greenland Sea is dependent upon the ice conditions during each of several previous years as well as the current year, the solution structure is more realistic, with two jumps per period of oscillation. 相似文献
