Chemical abundances determined from meteor spectra: I. Ratios of the main chemical elements

Abstract— Relative chemical abundances of 13 meteoroids were determined by averaging the composition of the radiating gas along the fireball path that originated during their penetration into the Earth's atmosphere. Mg, Fe, Ni, Cr, Mn, and Co abundances, relative to Si, are similar to those reported for CI and CM carbonaceous chondrites and interplanetary dust particles. In contrast, relative abundances of Ca and Ti in meteor spectra indicate that these elements suffer incomplete evaporation processes. The chemical composition of all meteoroids studied in this work differs from that of 1P/Halley dust.     

A search for high-redshift molecular absorption lines towards millimetre-loud, optically faint quasars

We describe initial results of a search for redshifted molecular absorption towards four millimetre-loud, optically faint quasars. A wide frequency bandwidth of up to 23 GHz per quasar was scanned using the Swedish–ESO Submillimetre Telescope at La Silla. Using a search list of commonly detected molecules, we obtained nearly complete redshift coverage up to   z _abs= 5  . The sensitivity of our data is adequate to have revealed absorption systems with characteristics similar to those seen in the four known redshifted millimetre-band absorption systems, but none were found. Our frequency-scan technique nevertheless demonstrates the value of wide-band correlator instruments for searches such as these. We suggest that a somewhat larger sample of similar observations should lead to the discovery of new millimetre-band absorption systems.     

Observations of High Resolution Spectra of Comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) at the SAO of the RAS

We present the results of the preliminary study of the comet Hale-Bopp spectrum obtained April 17, 1997 by K. Churyumov and F. Mussayev with the help of the 1-meter Zeiss reflector and the echelle spectrometer (spectral resolutionλ/Δ λ ≈ 50000), CCD and the long slit, oriented along the radius-vector(“Sun-comet direction”). Energy distributions for three selected regions including the C₃, C₂ (0-0) and CN(Δ ν = 0) molecules emissions of the comet Hale-Bopp spectrum were built. The rotational lines of the CN(Δ ν = 0) band were identified. The nature of the high emission peak near λ 4020 Å in the C₃ band is discussed. The presence of the cometary continuum of the nonsolar origin is assumed.     

A possible presence of HeH+ in white dwarfs

The equivalent width calculations for the fundamental vibration rotation band lines of HeH⁺ have been carried out for a non-DA white dwarf model with an effective temperature of 12 000 K. BothP andR branch lines with rotational quantum numbersJ=3 to 18 were included in the calculations. A search for these lines in helium rich white dwarfs is suggested.     

STORING AND CATALOGUING ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAMMETRY MATERIAL

The paper describes the material generated in carrying out architectural photogrammetric surveys. The importance of the archival nature of this material is highlighted and reference is made to the indexing and storing of the records.

In laboratory investigations with model waters, the behaviour of selected cation-exchange resins (Amberlite 200 C, Duolite C-25, Lewatit S-100, Wofatit KPS and Wofatit KS-10) is tested. The usable volume capacity of the resins in the forms of H, Na and NH₄ as well as the water content and the total volume capacity after 25 cycles of loading/regeneration are determined. It is recommended to use Amberlite 200 C and Wofatit KS-10.
