Studies of shoreline progradation along low-energy vegetated shorelines have been limited, as these environments are generally experiencing erosion rather than deposition, with extreme erosion rates frequently found. This study examined yearly changes along a vegetated shoreline at Calaveras Point Marsh, South San Francisco Bay, California, using aerial photography, to determine the roles of climatic, watershed, and coastal process in driving shoreline changes. In addition, sediment accumulation was monitored on a yearly basis at 48 locations across the marsh to determine the role of geomorphic factors in promoting accumulation. Calaveras Point Marsh was found to have expanded from 49.26 ± 5.2 to 165.7 ± 4.7 ha between 1975 and 2005. Although the rate of marsh expansion was not positively correlated with yearly variability in precipitation, local streamflow, delta outflow, water level observations, population growth, or ENSO indices, marsh growth was greater during years of higher than average temperatures. Warmer temperatures may have promoted the recruitment and growth of Spartina foliosa, a C4 grass known to be highly responsive to temperature. Other factors, such as the formation of a coastal barrier, a recent change in the location of the mouth of the Guadalupe River, and channel readjustment in response to diking are credited with driving the bulk of the marsh expansion. Sediment accumulation was found to be high closest to channels and to the shoreline, at low elevations and in recently vegetated marsh. Globally, the pace of sea level rise exerts the primary control on wetland development and persistence. However, at local geographic scales, factors such as tectonic events, modifications to natural sediment transport pathways or land use changes may overwhelm the effects of regional sea level rise, and allow for wetlands to develop, expand and persist despite rapid sea level rise.  相似文献

A suite of geomorphological and sedimentological features in the catchment of the upper Yenisei River in the Sayan mountains of southern Siberia testifies to the occurrence of cataclysmic floods that flowed down the river. Evidence of large-scale high-energy flood events includes: 1) gravel dunes, up to a few meters high and spaced 50 to 80 m apart, in the Kyzyl Basin 2) landforms such as hanging valleys and paleochannels and 3) flood sediments in a tributary valley. The origins of the Yenisei floods were likely diverse due to complex hydrological processes operating in the Sayan mountains. The possibilities include failures of multiple, variably impounded (ice, sedimentary, tectonic scarp, and lava flow dams) paleolakes in the two large intermontane basins of Darkhadyn Khotgor and Todza, and other minor basins, in the upper Yenisei River catchment. Dating techniques applied to the paleolakes in the Darkhadyn Khotgor and Todza basins revealed their formation during various periods in the middle–late Pleistocene and Holocene. Flooding from the Darkhadyn Khotgor appears to explain many of the inferred flood features, although contributions by flooding from other paleolake basins cannot be ruled out. Computer simulation of the flooding caused by a Darkhadyn Khotgor paleolake ice-dam failure indicates a probable peak discharge of  3.5 × 106 m3 s− 1, approximately one-fifth that of the floods that formed the Channeled Scabland in the U.S.A. Many of the outburst events probably occurred in the late Quaternary, but earlier floods could also have occurred.  相似文献

This paper aims to demonstrate the relationships between ENSO and rice production of Jiangxi province in order to identify the reason that ENSO might have little effect on Chinese rice production. Using a data set with measures of Jiangxi’s climate and rice production, we find the reason that during 1985 and 2004 ENSO’s well correlated with rainfall did not promote Chinese rice production. First, the largest effects of ENSO mostly occur in the months when there is no rice in the field. Second, there is almost no temperature effect. Finally, the monthly distribution of rainfall is almost the same in ENSO and neutral years because the largest effects are during months when there is the least rain. In addition, due to the high irrigation share and reliable and effective irrigation facilities of cultivated land, China’s rice production is less climate-sensitive.  相似文献

Reconstructed sunspot data are available that extend solar activity back to 11 360 years before the present. We have examined these data using Hurst analysis, a moving average filter, and Fourier analysis. All of the procedures indicate the presence of a long term (≈6 000 year) cycle not previously reported. A number of shorter cycles formerly identified in the literature by using Fourier analysis, Bayes methods, and maximum entropy methods were also detected in the reconstructed sunspot data.  相似文献

Large Igneous Province (LIP) eruption sites of the past 300 My lie vertically above 1% slow shear wave velocity (Vs) contours bounding the African and Pacific Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs) at the core–mantle boundary (CMB), or in the cases of the Siberian and Columbia River LIPs, bounding one or other of two smaller, Low Shear Velocity Provinces (LSVPs). Steep gradients in Vs at the CMB coincide with those 1% slow contours. The sites of 24 active hotspot volcanoes project down to the same narrowly defined borders of the LLSVPs at the CMB. Plumes that have generated LIPs and major hotspot volcanoes have risen only from the immediate neighbourhoods of the 1% slow Vs contours at the CMB which thus define Plume Generation Zones (PGZs). PGZs projected vertically upward approximately match the + 10 m elevation contour of the geoid showing that the LLSVPs are a dominant control on the positively elevated geoid. Minima in the frequency distribution of shear wave velocities in the lowermost mantle near Vs = ? 1% indicate that regions with more negative velocities, forming ~ 2% of total mantle mass, are likely to be of material compositionally different from the rest of the mantle. Because all LIP eruption sites with ages younger than 300 Ma lie above the borders of LLSVPs or LSVPs at the CMB, PGZ footprints are inferred to have remained in the same places for the past 300 My. Because no plumes have risen from the interior of the LLSVPs and because no lithospheric slabs have penetrated those bodies the volumes of the LLSVPs are inferred to have also remained unchanged for the past 300 My. Because the LLSVPs are the dominant control on the positively elevated areas of the geoid those too must have remained as they now are since 300 Ma. The LLSVPs are not rising buoyant objects but stable features of the deep mantle. LIPs have been erupted throughout the past 2.5 Gy indicating that PGZs comparable to those of the past 0.3 Gy and LLSVPs (of which PGZs mark the margins at the CMB) have also existed for at least that long. LLSVPs could thus form the isolated reservoir invoked by some to explain the distinctive isotopic compositions of terrestrial rocks. PGZs lie at places where the boundaries of: (i) The outer core, (ii) one of the LLSVPs or LSVPs, and (iii) the seismically faster part of the deep mantle meet. Horizontal temperature gradients across the steeply inclined margins to the LLSVPs, the interiors of which are hotter than the surrounding mantle, at the CMB are key controls for the generation of plumes. Near the CMB the association of the high temperature of the outer core with an inclined thermal boundary layer at the margins of LLSVPs facilitates the generation of mantle plumes in the PGZs.  相似文献

Net community production (NCP) and nutrient deficits (Def(X)) were calculated using decreases in dissolved CO2 and nutrient concentrations due to biological removal in the upper 200 m of the water column during four cruises in the Ross Sea, Antarctica along 76°30′S in 1996 and 1997. A comparison to excess dissolved and particulate organic carbon showed close agreement between surplus total organic carbon (TOC) and NCP during bloom initiation and productivity maximum; however, when TOC values had returned to low wintertime values NCP was still significantly above zero. This seasonal NCP, 3.9±1 mol C m−2, must be equivalent to the particle export to depths greater than 200 m over the whole productive season. We estimate that the annual export was 55±22% of the seasonal maximum in NCP. The fraction of the seasonal maximum NCP that is exported through 200 m is significantly higher than that measured by moored sediment traps at a depth of 206 m. The removal of carbon, nitrate and phosphate (based on nutrient disappearance since early spring) and their ratios showed significant differences between regions dominated by diatoms and regions dominated by the haptophyte Phaeocystis antarctica. While the ΔC/ΔN removal ratio was similar (7.8±0.2 for diatoms and 7.2±0.1 for P. antarctica), the ΔN/ΔP and ΔC/ΔP removal ratios for diatoms (10.1±0.3 and 80.5±2.3) were significantly smaller than those of P. antarctica (18.6±0.4 and 134.0±4.7). The similarity in ΔC/ΔN removal ratios of the two assemblages suggests that preferential uptake of phosphate by diatoms caused the dramatic differences in ΔC/ΔP and ΔN/ΔP removal ratios. In contrast to low ΔC/ΔP and ΔN/ΔP removal ratio in diatom-dominated areas early in the growing season, deficit N/P and C/P ratios in late autumn indicate that the elemental stochiometry of exported organic matter did not deviate significantly from traditional Redfield ratios. Changes in biologically utilized nutrient and carbon ratios over the course of the growing season indicated either a substantial remineralization of phosphate or a decrease in phosphate removal relative to carbon and total inorganic nitrogen over the bloom period. The species dependence in C/P ratios, and the relative constancy in the C/N ratios, makes N a better proxy of biological utilization of CO2.  相似文献

Motivated to help improve the robustness of predictions of sea level rise, the BRITICE-CHRONO project advanced knowledge of the former British–Irish Ice Sheet, from 31 to 15 ka, so that it can be used as a data-rich environment to improve ice sheet modelling. The project comprised over 40 palaeoglaciologists, covering expertise in terrestrial and marine geology and geomorphology, geochronometric dating and the modelling of ice sheets and oceans. A systematic and directed campaign, organised across eight transects from the continental shelf edge to a short distance (10s of kilometres) onshore, was used to collect 914 samples which yielded 639 new ages, tripling the number of dated sites constraining the timing and rates of change of the collapsing ice sheet. This special issue synthesises these findings of ice advancing to the maximum extent and its subsequent retreat for each of the eight transects to produce definitive palaeogeographic reconstructions of ice margin positions across the marine to terrestrial transition. These results are used to understand the controls that drove or modulated ice sheet retreat. A further paper reports on how ice sheet modelling experiments and empirical data can be used in combination, and another probes the glaciological meaning of ice-rafted debris.  相似文献

Magnetization, susceptibility and Mössbauer spectra are reported for representative chlorite samples with differing iron content. The anisotropy of the susceptibility and magnetization of a clinochlore crystal is explained using the trigonal effective crystal-field model developed earlier for 1:1 and 2:1 layer silicates, with a splitting of theT 2g triplet of 1,120K. Predominant exchange interactions in the iron-rich samples are ferromagnetic withJ=1.2 K, as for other trioctahedral ferrous minerals. A peak in the susceptibility of thuringite occurs atT m=5.5 K, and magnetic hyperfine splitting appears at lower temperatures in the Mössbauer spectrum. However neutron diffraction reveals no long-range magnetic order in thuringite (or biotite, which behaves similarly). The only magnetic contribution to the diffraction pattern at 1.6 K is increased small angle scattering (q<0.4 Å?1). A factor favouring this random ferromagnetic ground state over the planar antiferromagnetic state of greenalite and minnesotaite is the presence of pairs of ferric ions on adjacent sites, in conjunction with magnetic vacancies in the octahedral sheets. Monte Carlo simulations of the magnetic ground state of the sheets illustrate how long range ferromagnetic order may be destroyed by vortices forming around the Fe3+-Fe3+ pairs.  相似文献

The Equotip surface hardness tester is becoming a popular method for rock and stone weathering research. In order to improve the reliability of Equotip for on‐site application this study tested four porous limestones under laboratory conditions. The range of stone porosity was chosen to represent likely porosities found in weathered limestones in the field. We consider several key issues: (i) its suitability for soft and porous stones; (ii) the type of probe required for specific on‐site applications; (iii) appropriate (non‐parametrical) statistical methods for Equotip data; (iv) sufficient sampling size. This study shows that the Equotip is suitable for soft and porous rock and stone. From the two tested probes the DL probe has some advantages over the D probe as it correlates slightly better with open porosity and allows for more controlled sampling in recessed areas and rough or curved areas. We show that appropriate sampling sizes and robust non‐parametric methods for subsequent data evaluation can produce meaningful measures of rock surface hardness derived from the Equotip. The novel Hybrid dynamic hardness, a combination of two measuring procedures [single impact method (SIM) and repeated impact method (RIM)], has been adapted and is based on median values to provide a more robust data evaluation. For the tested stones in this study we propose a sample size of 45 readings (for a confidence level of 95%). This approach can certainly be transferred to stone and rock with similar porosities and hardness. Our approach also allows for consistent comparisons to be made across a wide variety of studies in the fields of rock weathering and stone deterioration research.
