High temperature solution calorimetry of synthetic quartz, coesite and stishovite provides enthalpies of transition. ΔH9750 for quartz-coesite and ΔH2980 for coesite-stishovite transition are 320 ± 70 and 11700 ± 410 cal mol?1, respectively. The present transformation enthalpy data represent a small but significant revision of those of Holm et al. Using the published phase equilibrium data, thermal expansivity, compressibility and heat capacity data, ΔS9750 for the quartz-coesite and ΔS2980 for the coesite-stishovite transition are ?1.2 ± 0.1 and ?1.0 ± 0.4 cal K?1 mol?1, respectively. These thermochemical data are used to calculate phase boundaries of the transitions. The calculated quartz-coesite transition boundary agrees well with the one determined experimentally by Bohlen and Boettcher. The calculated coesite-stishovite boundary is generally consistent with data by Yagi and Akimoto and by Suito.  相似文献

Branching of the Tsushima Current in the Japan Sea   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Three branches of the Tsushima Current are reproduced in a numerical model, and their formation mechanisms are studied. Two types of a two-layer, inflow-outflow model with a bottom slope along the Japanese coast are used. One has a bottom slope only in the lower layer (Model A), and the other has bottom slopes in both layers (Model B). Model B represents the typical situation in the Japan Sea, i.e., the main pycnocline intersects the bottom slope. The onshore side of the line where the pycnocline intersects the bottom slope has only one layer in Model B. Seasonal variation of inflow in the upper layer of the western half in the entrance section (the Tsushima Strait) is incorporated into the model.Three branches are formed in Model B and not in Model A. The first branch is the bottom-controlled steady current due to the topographic-effect on the upper-layer slope which exists in the one-layer region along the Japanese coast. The second branch is a temporal current which is formed along the offshore edge of the coastal one-layer region in association with the variation of inflow. The third branch is the steady western boundary current due to the planetary-effect. These results compare favorably with observations in Part I of this study.The mechanism of formation of the second branch is examined in detail. This branch is caused by the propagation of the lowest two modes of the upper shelf wave caused by the topographic-effect on the upper-layer slope which are generated by the significant increase in inflow from June to August.  相似文献

A steady model of typical non-large-meander paths of the Kuroshio Current   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Conditions south of Cape Shiono-misaki for the nearshore and offshore non-large-meander (NLM) paths of the Kuroshio Current are studied using a two-layer reduced gravity model. A steady and non-diffusive state is assumed, and the conservation laws of Bernoulli's function and potential vorticity along the current axis are used. Spatial changes of velocity and depth of the current are imposed as boundary conditions south of Cape Shiono-misaki. These conditions are based on the facts that are ohserved south of the cape: abrupt acceleration of the Kuroshio and the spatial change of sea levels. The current paths east of the cape are computed.This model reproduces well the actual nearshore NLM paths. It also produces offshore NLM paths west of and over the Izu Ridge, but not east of the Izu Ridge. Diffusion of vorticity may be important for the eastern part of the offshore NLM path.An increase of velocity south of the cape is necessary for producing realistic NLM paths. The velocity increase accompanies a decrease of current depth owing to Bernoulli's conservation, and the depth decrease in turn diminishes the absolute vorticity owing to the potential vorticity conservation. The velocity increase, on the other hand, strengthens the negative velocity shear and diminishes the relative vorticity. If the decreases of the relative and absolute vorticities compensate each other, the path goes excessively southward owing to the negative curvature south of the cape. Dominance of the relative vorticity change over the absolute vorticity change prevents, the path from shifting southward and causes the realistic NLM paths.The NLM paths need different amplitudes of the changes south of the cape depending on the velocity and transport of the current, but in any case, the nearshore NLM path needs larger changes than the offshore NLM path. This property and the amplitude of the changes are consistent with observations.  相似文献

Spectral properties of sea levels at Naze, Nishinoomote, Kushimoto, Uragami, Miyake-jima and HachijÔ-jima are examined for the non-large-meander (February 1964 – May 1975) and large-meander (October 1975 – December 1979) periods, and the periodicity of variation of the Kuroshio path is clarified.The large meander of the Kuroshio occurs with a primary period of about 20 years and secondary period of 7 to 8. 5 years. During the non-large-meander period, the Kuroshio alternately takes the nearshore and offshore non-large-meander paths with a primary period of 1. 6–1. 8 years. This variation is moreover composed of 110-day, around 195-day and annual periods. The 110-day variation of the Kuroshio path appears to have influence on the coastal sea levels between the Kii Peninsula and the Izu Ridge;i. e., the coastal sea levels rise and fall with one-month time lag after the Kuroshio has begun to approach and leave the Japanese coast. During the large-meander period, the 70 and 110-day variations are remarkable in sea levels south of Japan except Miyake-jima and HachijÔ-jima. The 70-day variation is highly coherent throughout the south coast of Japan; the coherent area of the 110-day variation seems to be smaller.The sea-level variations at Naze and Nishinoomote are not significantly coherent for any of the periods except for annual and semiannual cycles during both the non-large-meander and large-meander periods. That is, the sea-level variations are incoherent between the onshore and offshore sides of the Kuroshio, except for seasonal variation.  相似文献

Water masses in the East Sea are newly defined based upon vertical structure and analysis of CTD data collected in 1993–1999 during Circulation Research of the East Asian Marginal Seas (CREAMS). A distinct salinity minimum layer was found at 1500 m for the first time in the East Sea, which divides the East Sea Central Water (ESCW) above the minimum layer and the East Sea Deep Water (ESDW) below the minimum layer. ESCW is characterized by a tight temperature–salinity relationship in the temperature range of 0.6–0.12 °C, occupying 400–1500 m. It is also high in dissolved oxygen, which has been increasing since 1969, unlike the decrease in the ESDW and East Sea Bottom Water (ESBW). In the eastern Japan Basin a new water with high salinity in the temperature range of 1–5 °C was found in the upper layer and named the High Salinity Intermediate Water (HSIW). The origin of the East Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW), whose characteristics were found near the Korea Strait in the southwestern part of the East Sea in 1981 [Kim, K., & Chung, J. Y. (1984) On the salinity-minimum and dissolved oxygen-maximum layer in the East Sea (Sea of Japan), In T. Ichiye (Ed.), Ocean Hydrodynamics of the Japan and East China Seas (pp. 55–65). Amsterdam: Elsevier Science Publishers], is traced by its low salinity and high dissolved oxygen in the western Japan Basin. CTD data collected in winters of 1995–1999 confirmed that the HSIW and ESIW are formed locally in the Eastern and Western Japan Basin. CREAMS CTD data reveal that overall structure and characteristics of water masses in the East Sea are as complicated as those of the open oceans, where minute variations of salinity in deep waters are carefully magnified to the limit of CTD resolution. Since the 1960s water mass characteristics in the East Sea have changed, as bottom water formation has stopped or slowed down and production of the ESCW has increased recently.  相似文献

The attachment and feeding of pelagic copepods on discarded and occupied oikopleurid larvacean houses were investigated from May 1989 to August 1991 at an offshore station in the Nansei Islands, which is strongly influenced by the Kuroshio Current, and an inshore station in the central Seto Inland Sea.Oncaea spp.,Microsetella norvegica, and other calanoid and cyclopoid copepods were found attached onto discarded and occupied houses throughout the year at the offshore station, whereas neither discarded nor occupied houses, carried copepods at the inshore station at any time. The feeding behavior ofOncaea sp. in a discarded house was observed with a video tape recorder system.  相似文献

We suggest methods for the analysis of the spatial distribution of plant species in a research area divided into a quadrat lattice. In particular, information about the topography and the spaces without plants is used for the analysis. At sites with a homogeneous substratum, we classify the topography by whether a target grid is concave or convex with respect to a standard surface of altitude. At other sites, we classify the topography according to whether the grid is located at the edge of rock and/or at a water pool. Information about the topography and the plant existence is used for constructing 2 × 2 contingency tables. In order to determine the strength of dependence between the topography and plant existence, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) is used. The methods are applied to data of the microtopography and distribution of mosses in continental Antarctica.  相似文献

The 17 August 1999 Kocaeli earthquake in Turkey produced a majorsurface rupture. We traced this surface rupture from Gölcük toDüzce and located it accurately by using GPS. The closest distancefrom the surface rupture to the strong motion observation sites weredetermined. Then the attenuation characteristics of the observed peakground acceleration were compared with the attenuation relation given byFukushima and Tanaka (1992), which is suitable for the near-fault zone inJapan and gives results that closely match data recorded during the 1995Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake in Japan. Although this attenuation relationwas developed for Japan, we found that it agreed well with the KOCAELIearthquake. Furthermore, the observed spectral acceleration of 5%damping was compared with the building design code of Turkey and theobserved level was lower than the code.  相似文献
