Natural gas seepages occur on the United Kingdom's continental shelf and although published reports suggest that they are very rare, the petroleum industry has identified, but not publicly reported, many more. There is also very little data on the flux of gas from seabed seepages, and even less on the contribution of seepages to atmospheric concentrations of gases such as methane.
Potential gas source rocks include Quaternary and Tertiary peats as well as petroliferous source rocks such as the Carboniferous Coal Measures and the Upper Jurassic Kimmeridge Clays. There are also other organic-rich sediments which are potential source rocks. Together these cover a considerable part of the U.K. continental shelf.
Analogue seismic reflection (pinger) profiles acquired during the British Geological Survey's regional mapping programme have been reviewed to identify water column targets including fish and plumes of gas bubbles. The ability to distinguish targets is critical to an assessment of the distribution of gas seepages. Both theoretical predictions of target identity and the habits of shoaling fish have been investigated in order to identify a method of distinction.
Data from seabed seepages and measurements of seepage rates have been used to establish likely ranges of gas flux rates and the sizes of gas bubbles. The likelihood that a rising bubble will survive and escape into the atmosphere is determined primarily by bubble size and water depth; methane, the principal constituent of seepage gas, is relatively unreactive and sparingly soluble.
The studies have enabled a new estimate of the distribution of gas seepages on the U.K. continental shelf, and of the contribution to atmospheric methane levels. The results suggest that natural gas seepages are significantly more important as a source of methane than had hitherto been established. It is estimated that between 120,000 and 3.5 mtonnes of methane per year come from a continental shelf area of about 600,000 km2. This represents between 2% and 40% of the total United Kingdom methane emission. It is suggested that similar contributions arise from other continental shelf areas worldwide, and that geological sources of atmospheric methane are more significant than is generally acknowledged. 相似文献
A new cell line,CSEC,has been successfully established from embryos at gastrula stage of a cultured marine fish, half smooth tongue sole(Cynoglossus semilaevis).CSEC cells grow actively and stably more than 50 passages for over 200 d in DMEM medium supplemented with 15% FBS(fetal bovine serum),2.5 ng/cm 3 bFGF(basic fibroblast growth factor),1 ng/cm 3 LIF(leukemia inhibitory factor) and 50 mmol/dm 3 2-ME(2-mecaptoethanol).The cells grew well in the temperature range of 24-30 ℃ and the optimal growth temperature was 24℃.FBS and bFGF concentrations are the two key components for CSEC cells proliferation.Chromosome analysis reveals that CSEC cells have a normal diploid karyotype with 2n=42t.The significant fluorescent signals were observed in CSEC after transfection with the GFP reporter gene, suggesting that the CSEC cell line can be used as a useful tool for transgenic and genetic manipulation studies.CSEC cells showed the cytopathic effect(CPE) after infection with lymphosystis disease virus(LCDV) in 2 d.Moreover, the LCDV particles can be observed in the cytoplasm of virus-infected cells by electron microscopy. It suggests that CSEC could be potentially used for the study of aquatic virus. 相似文献
On the tangent bundle TSN-1 of the unit sphere SN-1, this paper reduces the coupled Burgers equations to two Neumann systems by using the nonlinearization of the Lax pair, whose Liouville integrability is displayed in the scheme of the r-matrix technique. Based on the Lax matrix of the Neumann systems, the Abel--Jacobi coordinates are appropriately chosen to straighten out the restricted Neumann flows on the complex torus, from which the new finite-gap solutions expressed by Riemann theta functions for the coupled Burgers equations are given in view of the Jacobi inversion. 相似文献
Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Si nanocrystals (NCs) prepared by 130 keV Si ions implantation onto SiO2 matrix were investigated as a function of annealing temperature and implanted ion dose. PL spectra consist of two PL peaks, originated from smaller Si NCs due to quantum confinement effect (QCE) and the interface states located at the surface of larger Si NCs. The evolution of number of dangling bonds (DBs) on Si NCs was also investigated. For hydrogen-passivated samples, a monotonic increase in PL peak intensity with the dose of implanted Si ions up to 3× 1017 ions /cm2 is observed. The number of DBs on individual Si NC, the interaction between DBs at the surface of neighbouring Si NCs and their effects on the efficiency of PL are discussed. 相似文献
We investigate the electronic structures of one and two monolayer iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules on Au(111) surfaces. The first monolayer FePc is lying flat on the Au(111) substrate, and the second monolayer FePc is tilted at ~15° relative to the substrate plane along the nearest neighbour [101-] direction with a lobe downward to the central hole of the unit cell in the first layer. The structural information obtained by first-principles calculations is in agreement with the experiment results. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the electronic structures of FePc molecules in one-monolayer FePc/Au(111) system are perturbed significantly, while the electronic structures of FePc molecules in the second monolayer in two-monolayer FePc/Au(111) system remain almost unchanged due to the screening of the buffer layer on Au(111). 相似文献
