Water is not currently stable in liquid form on the martian surface due to the present mean atmospheric pressure of ~7 mbar and mean global temperature of ~220 K. However, geomorphic features and hydrated mineral assemblages suggest that Mars’ climate was once warmer and liquid water flowed on the surface. These observations may indicate a substantially more massive atmosphere in the past, but there have been few observational constraints on paleoatmospheric pressures. Here we show how the 40Ar/36Ar ratios of trapped gases within martian meteorite ALH 84001 constrain paleoatmospheric pressure on Mars during the Noachian era [~4.56–3.8 billion years (Ga)]. Our model indicates that atmospheric pressures did not exceed ~1.5 bar during the first 400 million years (Ma) of the Noachian era, and were <400 mbar by 4.16 Ga. Such pressures of CO2 are only sufficient to stabilize liquid water on Mars’ surface at low latitudes during seasonally warm periods. Other greenhouse gases like SO2 and water vapor may have played an important role in intermittently stabilizing liquid water at higher latitudes following major volcanic eruptions or impact events. 相似文献

Benthic faunal assemblages were analysed from 47 stations in the central and southern parts of the Barents Sea, together with sedimentary and water column parameters, daily ice records and modelled integrated primary productivity. Sampling spanned areas influenced by Atlantic Water (AW) to those lying under Arctic Water (ArW), and included stations with mixed water masses. Ice cover suppressed water column productivity in the northern areas. Three main faunal groups were identified, based on similarity of numerical faunal composition. The northern and southern faunal groups were separated by the northernmost penetration of AW in the bottom water and the third group, the Hopen group, was influenced by modified bank water. Faunal abundances were significantly higher within the southern faunal group relative to the northern group, but the numbers of taxa present were similar. The particularly rich fauna of the Hopen group reflected sediment heterogeneity and tight pelagic–benthic coupling. These results suggest that a retreat and thinning of the ice cover in the Barents Sea likely will result in the northern parts of the Barents Sea becoming more Atlantic in character, with a higher productivity at the sea floor. 相似文献

The saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrow (Ammodramus caudacutus) and the morphologically similar seaside sparrow (Ammodramus maritimus) occur together in Atlantic coast salt marshes. Over 2 yr we examined food exploitation patterns to gain an understanding
of how these species coexist and to characterize the trophic conditions that allow the maintenance of different mating systems
within the same habitat. In the promiscuous saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrow, only females feed the young, while the young of
the socially monogramous seaside sparrow are fed by both parents. To determine dietary patterns, we used a nonlethal method
(throat constriction) to obtain food samples from nestlings. Resource states were determined by sweep-netting the vegetation
and by taking cores from the marsh surface. Based on volume, the same 4 prey groups (flies, amphipods, grasshoppers, moths)
composed > 80% of each species diet. The main food of both sparrows was adult and juvenile (larval and pupal) soldier flies
(Stratiomyidae:Odontomyia microstomata). Measures of dietary overlap, based on resource states, indicated that nestling diets did not differ between species on
a seasonal basis or over 2-wk intervals. As the season progressed, each species tracked in parallel changes in resource abundance.
Diets did not diverge from what was expected if food was exploited randomly; diets frequently overlapped significantly more
than expected. Interspecific resource-use patterns were congruent over 2 yr. Based on the results of this study, and on an
evaluation of hypotheses based on life history information from previously published work, we conclude that food usually is
not limiting for these sparrows and that resource abundance has fostered behavioral and dietary opportunism. 相似文献

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) confirmed that mean global warming was 0.6 ± 0.2 °C during the 20th century and cited anthropogenic increases in greenhouse gases as the likely cause of temperature rise in the last 50 years. But this mean value conceals the substantial complexity of observed climate change, which is seasonally- and diurnally-biased, decadally-variable and geographically patchy. In particular, over the last 50 years three high-latitude areas have undergone recent rapid regional (RRR) warming, which was substantially more rapid than the global mean. However, each RRR warming occupies a different climatic regime and may have an entirely different underlying cause. We discuss the significance of RRR warming in one area, the Antarctic Peninsula. Here warming was much more rapid than in the rest of Antarctica where it was not significantly different to the global mean. We highlight climate proxies that appear to show that RRR warming on the Antarctic Peninsula is unprecedented over the last two millennia, and so unlikely to be a natural mode of variability. So while the station records do not indicate a ubiquitous polar amplification of global warming, the RRR warming on the Antarctic Peninsula might be a regional amplification of such warming. This, however, remains unproven since we cannot yet be sure what mechanism leads to such an amplification. We discuss several possible candidate mechanisms: changing oceanographic or changing atmospheric circulation, or a regional air-sea-ice feedback amplifying greenhouse warming. We can show that atmospheric warming and reduction in sea-ice duration coincide in a small area on the west of the Antarctic Peninsula, but here we cannot yet distinguish cause and effect. Thus for the present we cannot determine which process is the probable cause of RRR warming on the Antarctic Peninsula and until the mechanism initiating and sustaining the RRR warming is understood, and is convincingly reproduced in climate models, we lack a sound basis for predicting climate change in this region over the coming century. 相似文献

Soil resources in parts of Tanzania are rapidly being depleted by increased rates of soil erosion and downstream sediment transport, threatening ecosystem health, water and livelihood security in the region. However, incomplete understanding to what effect the dynamics of soil erosion and sediment transport are responding to land-use changes and climatic variability are hindering the actions needed to future-proof Tanzanian land-use practices. Complementary environmental diagnostic tools were applied to reconstruct the rates and sources of sedimentation over time in three Tanzanian river systems that have experienced changing land use and climatic conditions. Detailed historical analysis of sediment deposits revealed drastic changes in sediment yield and source contributions. Quantitative sedimentation reconstruction using radionuclide dating showed a 20-fold increase in sediment yield over the past 120 years. The observed dramatic increase in sediment yield is most likely driven by increasing land-use pressures. Deforestation, cropland expansion and increasing grazing pressures resulted into accelerating rates of sheet erosion. A regime shift after years of progressive soil degradation and convergence of surface flows resulted into a highly incised landscape, where high amounts of eroded soil from throughout the catchment are rapidly transported downstream by strongly connected ephemeral drainage networks. By integrating complementary spatial and temporal evidence bases, this study demonstrated links between land-use change, increased soil erosion and downstream sedimentation. Such evidence can guide stakeholders and policy makers in the design of targeted management interventions to safeguard future soil health and water quality. 相似文献

Water is a dominant component of volcanic clouds and has fundamental control on very fine particle deposition. Particle size characteristics of distal tephra-fall (100s km from source volcano) have a higher proportion of very fine particles compared to predictions based on single particle settling rates. In this study, sedimentological analyses of fallout from for the 18 August and 16–17 September 1992 eruptions of Crater Peak, Alaska, are combined with satellite observations, and cloud trajectory and microphysics modeling to investigate meteorological influences on particle sedimentation. Total grain size distributions of tephra fallout were reconstructed for both Crater Peak eruptions and indicate a predominance of fine particles < 125 μm. Polymodal analysis of the deposits has identified a particle subpopulation with mode ~ 15–18 μm involved in particle aggregation. Accounting for the magmatic water source only, calculated ice water content of the 3.7 hour old September 1992 Spurr cloud was ~ 4.5 × 10− 2 g m− 3 (based on an estimated cloud thickness of ~ 1000 m from trajectory modeling). Hydrometeor formation on particles in the volcanic cloud and subsequent sublimation may induce a cloud base instability that leads to rapid bulk (en masse) sedimentation of very fine particles through a mammatus-like mechanism. 相似文献

Diverse, cellularly preserved microbial communities are now known from stromatolitic sediments of at least twenty-eight Precambrian formations. These fossiliferous deposits, principally cherts and cherty portions of carbonate units, range in age from Early Proterozoic (Transvaal Dolomite, ca. 2250 Ma old) to Vendian (Chichkan Formation, ca. 650 Ma old) and include units from Australia, India, Canada, South Africa, Greenland, the United States and the Soviet Union. More than three-quarters of these microbiotas have been discovered since 1970. Although few, therefore, have as yet been studied in detail, virtually all of the assemblages are known to be dominated by prokaryotic (bacterial and blue-green algal) microorganisms and to contain three major categories of microfossils: spheroidal unicells, cylindrical tube-like sheaths, and cellular trichomic filaments. Analyses of data now available (including measurements of more than 7800 fossil unicells) indicate that each of these three types of microfossils exhibited a gradual, but marked, increase in mean diameter and size range during the Proterozoic and that taxonomic diversity apparently also increased, especially beginning about 1400 Ma ago. Thus, it now seems evident that (i) the microbial components of Proterozoic stomatolitic assemblages have varied systematically as a function of geologic age and that (ii) such communities are both more abundant and more widespread than had previously been recognized. These observations augur well for the future use of such assemblages in Precambrian biostratigraphy. At present, however, data are sufficient to warrant the provisional establishment of only a few microfossil-based subdivisions of the Proterozoic. Such zones, necessarily relatively long-ranging, are here tentatively defined; it is of interest to note that boundaries between certain of these microfossil-based subdivisions appear to coincide, at least approximately, with previously suggested stromatolite-based boundaries. To some extent, therefore, results of this study seem consistent with, and may be supportive of, the concept of stromatolite-based biostratigraphy. At the same time, however, the study seems to indicate that stromatolites of markedly differing age, whether of similar or of dissimilar morphology, were probably formed by distinctly differing microbiotas. Data are as yet insufficient to indicate whether differing types of coetaneous, stratigraphically useful, stromatolites were formed by differing microbial communities and two what extent the “evolution” of stromatolite morphology was a result of the biologic evolution of stromatolite-building microorganisms. There is thus continued need for investigation of the potential biostratigraphic usefulness of stromatolitic microbiotas and, especially, for more effective integration of results of such studies with those available from studies of stromatolites without preserved microbiotas and from studies of the acritarchs preserved in Proterozoic shales. 相似文献

The sea lochs (fjords) of north-west Scotland are located in a region of Europe particularly well situated to monitor changes in westerly air streams. The moisture transported in these air streams has a profound effect on regional precipitation, freshwater run-off and, in turn, sea loch circulation. The gentle slope of the regional salinity:δ18 O mixing-line, defined as 0.18 ‰ per salinity unit, suggests that the temperature: δ18 O relationship may be readily resolved in these coastal waters. Deep-water renewal events, both observed and predicted from empirical models, in the bottom-waters of Loch Etive provide an opportunity to assess the temperature, salinity and δ18 O relationship. Predicted changes in δ18 Ocalcite as a function of changing salinity (ΔS) and changing temperature (ΔT) during deep-water renewal events suggest that >80% fall above analytical detection limits. The theoretical likelihood of recording such renewal events in the "palaeoclimate" record appears to be promising, but temperature and salinity change during renewal events may have either sign. Scottish fjords, because of the relatively small impact which salinity has on δ18 Owater , may provide useful study sites in palaeoclimate research, particularly where palaeotemperature is the primary record of interest. 相似文献

The ability to test for similarities and differences among families of shapes by closed-form Fourier expansion is greatly enhanced by the concept of homology. Underlying this concept is the assumption that each term of a Fourier series, when compared to the same term in another series, represents the same thing. A method that ensures homology is one which minimizes the centering error, as reflected in the first harmonic term of the Fourier expansion. The problem is to chose a set of edge points derived from a much larger, but variable, number of edge points such that a valid homologous Fourier series can be calculated. Methods are reviewed and criteria given to define a proper solution. An algorithm is presented which takes advantage of the fact that minimization of the error term can be accomplished by minimizing the distance between the origin of the polar coordinate system in the calculation of the Fourier series and the shape centroid. The use of this algorithm has produced higher quality solutions for quartz grain provenance studies. 相似文献
